18F-Sodium Fluoride PET/CT as a Tool to Assess Enthesopathies in X-Linked Hypophosphatemia.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare metabolic disorder characterized by elevated FGF23 and chronic hypophosphatemia, leading to impaired skeletal mineralization and enthesopathies that are associated with pain, stiffness, and diminished quality of life. The natural history of enthesopathies in XLH remains poorly defined, partly due to absence of a sensitive quantitative tool for assessment and monitoring. This study investigates the utility of 18F-NaF PET/CT scans in characterizing enthesopathies in XLH subjects. In 19 adult XLH subjects, enthesopathy burden was assessed by quantifying c

Effects of low concentration of fluoride exposure during fetal on behavior and neurotransmitters in adult mice.

Fluoride (F) naturally occurs in water in China and India, and in excess, can cause skeletal fluorosis and mottled teeth. Chronic exposure to F during gestation can affect the development of the brain, reducing intelligence quotient and inducing autism spectrum disorder-like behavior. In the present study, it was aimed to clarify the effects of chronic exposure to low concentrations of F in utero on brain function. The behavior was assessed, the levels of brain neurotransmitters were measured in mice and their relationships were analyzed. ICR mice consumed water containing sodium fluoride (F c

An in vivo and in silico probing of the protective potential of betaine against sodium fluoride-induced neurotoxicity.

Excessive fluoride exposure beyond the tolerable limit may adversely impacts brain functionality. Betaine (BET), a trimethyl glycine, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic functions, although the underlying mechanisms of the role of BET on fluoride-induced neurotoxicity remain unelucidated. To assess the mechanism involved in the neuro-restorative role of BET on behavioural, neurochemical, and histological changes, we employed a rat model of sodium fluoride (NaF) exposure. Animals were treated with NaF (9 mg/kg) body weight (bw) only or co-treated with BET (50 and 100 mg/

The use of silver diamine fluoride to prevent/treat enamel carious lesions: a narrative review.

This comprehensive literature review examines the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for the prevention and treatment of enamel carious lesions. SDF has been approved by different international drug associations as a caries-preventing agent to be used on deep carious lesions (dentin). However, SDF can cause staining of exposed tooth structures. Furthermore, the effect of SDF on the bond of adhesives to the tooth structure is still being determined. This review explores various studies on the use of SDF to treat enamel carious lesions, highlighting its effectiveness and preventive action. The

Bleaching as a complement to fluoride-enhanced remineralization or resin infiltration in masking white spot lesions.

OBJECTIVE: There are many suitable strategies for addressing caries, which is an ongoing worldwide problem. Although white spot lesions (WSLs) can be either remineralized naturally or treated with non- or micro-invasive strategies, their whitish and opaque appearance may persist. To evaluate the effects of tooth bleaching as a complement to fluoride-enhanced remineralization or resin infiltration in masking WSLs, as well as in enamel surface roughness relative to that of the adjacent enamel. METHODOLOGY: Flattened rectangular bovine enamel fragments (6×3×~2.9 mm length, width and thickness) w

Effect of Voluntary Wheel Running on Anxiety- and Depression-Like Behaviors in Fluoride-Exposed Mice.

Fluoride, an environmental toxicant, could induce endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in neuronal cells ultimately leading to apoptosis and emotional dysfunction. Meanwhile, voluntary wheel running contributes to mitigate anxiety and depression. Our investigation aimed to study the effect of voluntary wheel running on anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in fluoride-exposure mice. The results showed that exposure to 100 mg/L sodium fluoride (NaF) for 6 months can induce anxiety- and depression-like behavior in mice. Fluorosis mice subjected to voluntary wheel running have less anxiety- and de

Thionyl fluoride as a sulfur(IV) SuFEx hub for the efficient syntheses of sulfinamides and sulfinate esters.

Herein, we demonstrate a method for the syntheses of sulfinamides and sulfinate esters using a novel sulfur(IV) fluoride exchange reaction with organometallic reagents. Our strategy involves the addition of an amine or alcohol nucleophile to thionyl fluoride, acting as a S(IV) SuFEx hub, followed by an organometallic reagent. This approach allows efficient access to sulfinamides (45-91% yields) and sulfinate esters (44-82% yields) in only 30 minutes. The sulfinamide and sulfinate esters also can be readily derivatized to the corresponding S(VI) sulfonamides, sulfonate esters, sulfonimidamides,

Discovering trends in the Lewis acidity of beryllium and magnesium hydrides and fluorides with increasing clusters size.

We have reported in the last years the strong effect that Be- and Mg-containing Lewis acids have on the intrinsic properties of typical bases, which become acids upon complexation. In an effort to investigate these changes when the Be and Mg derivatives form clusters of increasing size, we have examined the behavior of the (MX2)n (M = Be, Mg; X = H, F; n = 1, 2, 3) clusters when they interact with ammonia, methanimine, hydrogen cyanide and pyridine, and with their corresponding deprotonated forms. The complexes obtained at the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level were analyzed using the MBIE energy decomp

Highly efficient recovery of phosphate and fluoride from phosphogypsum leachate: Selective precipitation and adsorption.

Phosphogypsum, a typical by-product in the phosphorus chemical industry, could generate a large amount of leachate containing phosphate and fluoride in the process of rainfall and long-term stacking, which not only causes serious environmental pollution, but also leads to a waste of resources. In this study, a united treatment of calcium hydroxide precipitation and lanthanum zeolite (La-ZFA) adsorption was proposed to achieve the recovery of phosphate and fluoride from phosphogypsum leachate. In phosphogypsum, most phosphorus could be leached except P in the residual occurrence form, while for

NTP monograph on the state of the science concerning fluoride exposure and neurodevelopment and cognition: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride is a common exposure in our environment that comes from a variety of sources and is widely promoted for its dental and overall oral health benefits. Contributions to an individual's total exposure come primarily from fluoride in drinking water, food, beverages and dental products. A 2006 evaluation by the National Research Council (NRC) found support for an association between consumption of high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in drinking water and adverse neurological effects in humans and recommended further investigation. The evidence reviewed at that time was f
