From Multisensory Integration to Multisensory Decision-Making.

Organisms live in a dynamic environment in which sensory information from multiple sources is ever changing. A conceptually complex task for … processed, accumulated, and integrated over time in decision-related areas such as the parietal or frontal lobes in mammals. In this review, we summarize and comment on these studies that combine the long-existed two parallel fields of multisensory integration and decision-making. We show how the new findings provide insight into our understanding about neura …

A primitive gigantopyramidal field buried in the depth of the cingulate sulcus of the human brain.

By stereomicroscopical examination of a complete series of pigment preparations up to 1000 mum thick, a gigantopyramidal area in the brain of man is described, which lies in front of the primary motor field on the medial surface of the hemisphere and is almost totally buried in the depth of the cingulate sulcus extending in both length and width over about 15 mm. Serial sections cut in the transverse plane display the field approximately within the limits of the commissura anterior on the one hand and the corpora mamillaria on the other, where it occupies large parts of the dorsal wall of the

Metabolic signatures of Huntington's disease (HD): (1)H NMR analysis of the polar metabolome in post-mortem human brain.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal neurodegenerative disorder affecting approximately 5-10 persons per 100,000 worldwide. The pathophysiology of HD is not fully understood but the age of onset is known to be highly dependent on the number of CAG triplet repeats in the huntingtin gene. Using (1)H NMR spectroscopy this study biochemically profiled 39 brain metabolites in post-mortem striatum (n=14) and frontal lobe (n=14) from HD sufferers and controls (n=28). Striatum metabolites were more perturbed with 15 significantly affected in HD cases, compared with only 4 in frontal lobe (p<0.05;…

Organization of parietoprefrontal and temporoprefrontal networks in the macaque.

The connectivity among architectonically defined areas of the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex of the macaque has been extensively mapped through tract-tracing methods. To investigate the statistical organization underlying this connectivity, and identify its underlying architecture, we performed a hierarchical cluster analysis on 69 cortical areas based on their anatomically defined inputs. We identified 10 frontal, four parietal, and five temporal hierarchically related sets of areas (clusters), defined by unique sets of inputs and typically composed of anatomically contiguous areas. A

Bright light exposure before bedtime impairs response inhibition the following morning: a non-randomized crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Bright light exposure in the late evening can affect cognitive function the following morning either by changing the biological clock and/or disturbing sleep, but the evidence for this effect is scarce, and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we first aimed to evaluate the effect of bright light exposure before bedtime on frontal lobe activity the following morning using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a Go/NoGo task. Second, we aimed to evaluate the effects of bright light exposure before bedtime on polysomnographic measures and on a frontal lobe fu…

[Context-Dependent Oscillation in Frontal Cortical Areas].

The frontal lobe consists of motor and prefrontal cortices with correlated but hierarchically organized functions. Specifically, cellular activity and oscillations are highly context dependent. On the other hand, cortical oscillations are due to the dynamic balance between excitation and inhibition. Several types of inhibitory neurons play distinct functional roles. This chapter reviews oscillatory phenomena and neural activity in the frontal lobes, as well as the local circuits underlying different oscillatory modes.

Perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging used in assessing hemodynamics following superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery bypass in patients with Moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: The best strategy to assess the changes in brain hemodynamics following superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery … due to cerebral ischemic attacks or intracranial hemorrhages. Brain PWI images were obtained in the frontal lobes, the temporal lobes, the occipital lobes, and the basal ganglia before and after STA-MCA bypass surgery. The relative parameters cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV) and mean transit time (MTT) derived from PWI were calculated. Al …

Spatial-temporal representation of cortical neural activity evoked by acupuncture stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Acupuncture modulates cognitive functions through acupoint stimulation and demonstrates significant regulatory effects on brain disorders. However, the underlying neurodynamic mechanisms of acupuncture remain unclear due to a lack of effective measures of brain activity. In this study, we developed an acupuncture-related potential (ARP) method based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the dynamic representation mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation. By analyzing ARP signal features and functional networks to capture stimulus-evoked brain activity, we derived spatiote

[A multicentric glioma exhibiting three supratentorial lesions].

We reported a multicentric glioma having three separate lesions in the cerebrum. A 75-year old man was hospitalized with progressive disorientation. Computed tomography demonstrated two lesions in the left temporal lobe and the right frontal lobe. Magnetic resonance image disclosed one more lesion in the right occipital lobe. 2-staged operative procedures were performed for the left temporal and the right frontal tumors. It was histologically proven that one was glioblastoma and the other was anaplastic astrocytoma. The patient subsequently underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Most multice…

Giant Interfrontal Encephalocele in an Infant: A Rare Entity.

Interfrontal encephalocele is one of the rare varieties of anterior encephalocele, and a giant interfrontal encephalocele is extremely rare. The authors could find only one case report of giant interfrontal encephalocele in the literature. Anterior encephaloceles are more prevalent in South-East Asia and some northern parts of India. Giant encephalocele poses a great challenge to neurosurgeons and neuroanesthetists during surgery, as these infants usually have a low birth weight and a large sac, thus making the infant prone to hypothermia and blood loss among other risks. We encountered a pati
