Ventral attention and motor network connectivity is relevant to functional impairment in spatial neglect after right brain stroke.

Emerging research suggests spatial neglect after right stroke is linked to dysfunctional attention and motor networks. Advanced functional connectivity analysis clarified brain network recovery, however we need to know how networks participate in adaptive motor performance. We need to verify network changes associated with validated functional measures and spatial-motor performance in spatial neglect, especially in patients with large brain lesions and significant disability. This study tested whether disability-relevant spatial neglect associates with different patterns of resting state funct

Differences in global and local level information processing in autism: an fMRI investigation.

People with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have atypical visual perception of global and local information. Previous neuroimaging studies have examined the functional anatomy of locally directed attention during visual processing in ASD, but few have examined differences in both globally and locally directed attention. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 17 adults with ASD and 16 typically developing (TD) subjects to examine the neurobiology of both global- and local-level information processing in ASD using an abstract hierarchical design task. TD subjects showed no

Modeling inter-subject heterogeneity improves multisite rs-fMRI identification of major depressive disorder: An interpretable graph neural network approach.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly heterogeneous affective disorder, and the identification of reliable neuroimaging markers remains challenging. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging offers a promising approach for characterizing altered brain functional organization in MDD. However, most existing studies model subjects independently and do not sufficiently consider inter-subject heterogeneity, particularly in multisite datasets. METHODS: We developed an interpretable brain region-aware multimodal graph neural network (BRM-GNN) for rs-fMRI-based MDD identif

A conceptual critique of brain lateralization models in emotional face perception: Toward a hemispheric functional-equivalence (HFE) model.

The present review proposes a novel dynamic model of brain lateralization of emotional (happy, surprised, fearful, sad, angry, and disgusted) and neutral face perception. Evidence to date suggests that emotional face perception is lateralized in the brain. At least five prominent hypotheses of the lateralization of emotional face perception have been previously proposed; the right-hemisphere hypothesis; the valence-specific hypothesis; the modified valence-specific hypothesis; the motivational hypothesis; and behavioral activation/inhibition system hypothesis. However, a growing number of rece

Reduced prefrontal hemodynamic response in adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.

AIM: Recent developments in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) have enabled non-invasive clarification of brain functions in psychiatric disorders. In pediatric attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), reduced prefrontal hemodynamic responses have been observed with NIRS repeatedly. However, there are few studies of adult ADHD by multi-channel NIRS. Therefore, in this study, we used multi-channel NIRS to examine the characteristics of prefrontal hemodynamic responses during the Stroop Color-Word Task (SCWT) in adult ADHD patients and in age- and sex-matched control subjects. METHODS: T

Advances in neurocognitive rehabilitation research from 1992 to 2017: The ascension of neural plasticity.

OBJECTIVE: The last 25 years have seen profound changes in neurocognitive rehabilitation that continue to motivate its evolution. Although the concept of nervous system plasticity was discussed by William James (1890), the foundation for experience-based plasticity had not reached the critical empirical mass to seriously impact rehabilitation research until after 1992. The objective of this review is to describe how the emergence of neural plasticity has changed neurocognitive rehabilitation research. METHOD: The important developments included (a) introduction of a widely available tool that

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlates of First-Episode Psychoses during Attentional and Memory Task Performance.

BACKGROUND: The nature of the alteration of the response to cognitive tasks in first-episode psychosis (FEP) still awaits clarification. We used activation likelihood estimation, an increasingly used method in evaluating normal and pathological brain function, to identify activation changes in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of FEP during attentional and memory tasks. METHODS: We included 11 peer-reviewed fMRI studies assessing FEP patients versus healthy controls (HCs) during performance of attentional and memory tasks. RESULTS: Our database comprised 290 patients with

Generalized Multilevel Multisource Functional Regression With an Application to Alzheimer's Disease.

With population aging, Alzheimer's disease has gained increasing attention. Advances in medical technology and longitudinal studies such as the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) have generated diverse follow-up data, which can be viewed as multilevel multisource functional data for understanding disease progression. In this paper, we propose a new estimation method for the multilevel multisource functional principal components. This method first applies the multilevel functional principal component analysis on the univariate multilevel functional data, then obtains the estimat

Hypertension and cognitive dysfunction: a review of mechanisms, life-course observational studies and clinical trial results.

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent vascular risk factors and a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. The negative impact of hypertension on brain health is substantial. Already well-established as a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease, hypertension also has been shown to increase the risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. Mounting evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that hypertension, particularly in midlife, is associated with late-life cognitive impairment and the development of dementia. The link between late-life hypertension and cognitive function

Defining functioning levels in patients with schizophrenia: A combination of a novel clustering method and brain SPECT analysis.

This study aims to define functioning levels of patients with schizophrenia by using a method of interpretable clustering based on a specific functioning scale, the Functional Remission Of General Schizophrenia (FROGS) scale, and to test their validity regarding clinical and neuroimaging characterization. In this observational study, patients with schizophrenia have been classified using a hierarchical top-down method called clustering using unsupervised binary trees (CUBT). Socio-demographic, clinical, and neuroimaging SPECT perfusion data were compared between the different clusters to ensur

Beyond motor learning: Insights from infant magnetic resonance imaging on the critical role of the cerebellum in behavioral development.

Although the cerebellum is now recognized for its crucial role in non-motor functions such as language, perceptual processes, social communication, and executive function in adults, it is often overlooked in studies of non-motor behavioral development in infancy. Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research increasingly shows the cerebellum is key to understanding the emergence of complex human behaviors and neurodevelopmental conditions. This review summarizes studies from diverse MRI modalities that link early cerebellar development from birth to age two with emerging non-motor behaviors

New functional insights from the monkey claustrum.

The claustrum is a subcortical nucleus with widespread, reciprocal connections to the cortex and beyond, inspiring many models of its function. Decades of work from rodents provide a foundational understanding of the anatomy and functional organization of the claustrum, which is more recently aided by human functional neuroimaging studies. However, important questions remain with broad functional implications. These center on claustrum anatomical boundaries, functional organization, and the putative expansion of human claustrum connectivity over that predicted by rodent studies alone. Providin…

Abnormal interhemispheric functional interactions in drug-naïve adult-onset first episode psychosis patients.

Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the cortical functional dysconnectivity contributed to the etiology of schizophrenia (SCZ). However, the interhemispheric functional interactions in SCZ remain not fully understood. The clinical heterogeneity of SCZ might lead to the variations in the findings and the effect of medication had a profound influence on the patient's functional features. In this study, we were aimed at investigating the interhemispheric functional interactions in drug-naïve adult-onset first episode psychosis (FEP) patients. Using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity

Temporal synchrony promotes motor recovery and ipsilesional cortical reorganization in BCI-based stroke rehabilitation: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic mechanisms of brain-computer interface (BCI) rehabilitation remain partially understood. Specifically, it is unclear whether functional gains are driven primarily by active neural engagement or strictly by the temporal contingency between motor intention and sensory feedback. This study aimed to deconstruct the BCI paradigm to isolate the specific contributions of these core components to functional recovery and cortical reorganization in subacute stroke. METHODS: Seventy-seven subacute stroke patients were randomized into three intervention arms. Group C (synchron
