Craniofacial reconstruction using rational cubic ball curves.

This paper proposes the reconstruction of craniofacial fracture using rational cubic Ball curve. The idea of choosing Ball curve is based on its robustness of computing efficiency over Bezier curve. The main steps are conversion of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (Dicom) images to binary images, boundary extraction and corner point detection, Ball curve fitting with genetic algorithm and final solution conversion to Dicom format. The last section illustrates a real case of craniofacial reconstruction using the proposed method which clearly indicates the applicability of this met

[One step method to design concave holographic grating for monochromator].

The present paper put forward a new method, named one step method, to design concave holographic grating for a monochromator. This new method is simple and direct and easy to understand. Additionally, in this new method, we can control the whole aberrations of concave grating very well. Genetic algorithm was applied to optimize the objective function of this new method for its strong ability to search the extremum of nonlinear functions and a comparison was made between this new method and the classical method. The result shows that, for coma correction or astigmatism correction, the imaging p

[A new method of designing genechip probe for frontier port detection of pathogenic microorganism].

In the process of designing genechip probe for detecting pathogenic microorganism, the selection of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) combination is of great importance. At present, there is no automatic design method. This work is hard and the result is not always well. A new approach for selecting SNP combination is presented in this paper. Genetic algorithm is used to search optimal solution on the basis of classification ability of SNP combination, which is evaluated by the rough set theory. Other related experimental parameters are also incorporated. Experimental results show that the

A model of behavioral treatments for self-mutilation behavior in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, caused by a mutation in the gene coding for the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase, which is characterized by hyperuricemia and its associated symptoms along with motor disorders and compulsive self-mutilation. We show that the temporal difference learning algorithm that has been often used to interpret dopaminergic activity in the basal ganglia offers an explanation for the self-mutilation behaviors. We propose that a dysfunctional dopamine signal inadvertently reinforces early, accidental injurious behavior that is initially

Nonrandom distribution of genotypes among red cell indices.

Venous blood samples were obtained from 25,302 healthy adults in Kentucky, USA. The red cell indices measured on these samples were evaluated by multiple stepwise regression analysis to derive an algorithm capable of discriminating the 138 individuals within this population who had genotypes AA, AC, AS or AA beta-thalassemia. The simple discriminant MCV2 x MCH with a cut-off set at 1530 detected 137 out of 138 of the heterozygotes with a false positive rate in this population of 4.4%. Other discriminants tested produced fewer false positives but also missed a sufficient number of heterozygotes

Genetic diversity and population structure of Aedes aegypti after massive vector control for dengue fever prevention in Yunnan border areas.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the dengue virus. Aedes aegypti (Ae. Aegypti) is considered the primary vector of Dengue virus transmission in Yunnan Province, China. With increased urbanization, Ae. aegypti populations have significantly increased over the last 20 years. Despite all the efforts that were made for controlling the virus transmission, especially on border areas between Yunnan and Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar (dengue-endemic areas), the epidemic has not yet been eradicated. Thus, further understanding of the genetic diversity, population structure, and invasive s

An Efficient Nonlinear Regression Approach for Genome-wide Detection of Marginal and Interacting Genetic Variations.

Genome-wide association studies have revealed individual genetic variants associated with phenotypic traits such as disease risk and gene expressions. However, detecting pairwise interaction effects of genetic variants on traits still remains a challenge due to a large number of combinations of variants (∼10(11) SNP pairs in the human genome), and relatively small sample sizes (typically <10(4)). Despite recent breakthroughs in detecting interaction effects, there are still several open problems, including: (1) how to quickly process a large number of SNP pairs, (2) how to distinguish between

STAMS: STRING-assisted module search for genome wide association studies and application to autism.

MOTIVATION: Analyzing genome wide association data in the context of biological pathways helps us understand how genetic variation influences phenotype and increases power to find associations. However, the utility of pathway-based analysis tools is hampered by undercuration and reliance on a distribution of signal across all of the genes in a pathway. Methods that combine genome wide association results with genetic networks to infer the key phenotype-modulating subnetworks combat these issues, but have primarily been limited to network definitions with yes/no labels for gene-gene interaction

Moving artificial intelligence from research to real-world clinical use in neurology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in neurology have reached an inflection point. Despite US Food and Drug Administration approval of numerous algorithms in neuroimaging, neurophysiology, genetics and chatbots, their real-world impact remains limited. This disconnect between research promise and clinical reality represents a gap in understanding how to translate AI algorithms into clinical benefit for patients globally. In this Perspective, we examine the challenges that prevent clinical AI use in neurology moving beyond pilot studies towards meaningful clinical impact. We consider the

Management of keratoconus: an updated review.

Keratoconus is the most common corneal ectatic disorder. It is characterized by progressive corneal thinning with resultant irregular astigmatism and myopia. Its prevalence has been estimated at 1:375 to 1:2,000 people globally, with a considerably higher rate in the younger populations. Over the past two decades, there was a paradigm shift in the management of keratoconus. The treatment has expanded significantly from conservative management (e.g., spectacles and contact lenses wear) and penetrating keratoplasty to many other therapeutic and refractive modalities, including corneal cross-link

Optimization problem of bike-sharing system rebalancing based on dynamic pricing.

Bike-Sharing Systems (BSS) help address first- and last-mile travel challenges. As a limited public resource, the current pricing mechanism fails to fully exploit the service potential of bike-sharing or adequately capture heterogeneous user price sensitivity. We propose a Dynamic pricing-based Stochastic Demand-Response Optimization (DSDRO) method to address this gap. The method balances service fairness under varying demand stickiness while maximizing enterprise resource utilization. The DSDRO framework leverages spatiotemporal patterns in bike-sharing demand data and introduces a dynamic pr

Large-scale non-destructive crown-level assessment of Ginkgo pigments via hyperspectral and machine learning techniques.

The photosynthetic pigments - chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), and carotenoids (Car) - in juvenile ginkgo leaves are crucial for growth monitoring as they reflect physiological status and directly influence the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and terpene lactones. Traditional pigment measurement methods (acetone/ethanol extraction, SPAD, etc.) are inadequate for large-scale dynamic monitoring and high-throughput phenotyping analysis. To address this, this study developed a non-destructive prediction model for Chl a, Chl b, and Car contents in ginkgo seedling

Hyperspectral imaging combined with GA-SVM for maize variety identification.

The demand for identification of maize varieties has increased dramatically due to the phenomenon of mixed seeds and inferior varieties pretending to be high-quality varieties continuing to occur. It is urgent to solve the problem of efficient and accurate identification of maize varieties. A hyperspectral image acquisition system was used to acquire images of maize seeds. Regions of interest (ROI) with an embryo size of 10 × 10 pixel were extracted, and the average spectral information in the range of 949.43-1709.49 nm was intercepted for the subsequent study in order to eliminate random nois

Identifying and ranking potential driver genes of Alzheimer's disease using multiview evidence aggregation.

MOTIVATION: Late onset Alzheimer's disease is currently a disease with no known effective treatment options. To better understand disease, new multi-omic data-sets have recently been generated with the goal of identifying molecular causes of disease. However, most analytic studies using these datasets focus on uni-modal analysis of the data. Here, we propose a data driven approach to integrate multiple data types and analytic outcomes to aggregate evidences to support the hypothesis that a gene is a genetic driver of the disease. The main algorithmic contributions of our article are: (i) a gen
