In recent history, human life expectancy has increased significantly, resulting in a high burden of late-life morbidity and geriatric fractures. Changes to the body as a result of aging, such as degeneration of the bone marrow, osteoblast apoptosis, and a decline in hormone production, coupled with sarcopenia, are only a few factors that predispose the elderly to fractures. In addition, these factors further complicate surgical management, as they increase the risk of fixation failure, nonunion, malunion, and wound complications. As a result, the standards of geriatric fracture fixation must a

BACKGROUND: Low-trauma fractures of the hip signify osteoporosis and increase the risk of a second fracture. However, screening for secondary osteoporosis and initiating osteoporosis treatment can be challenging in a geriatric population.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate an in-hospital approach to secure treatment, screening and follow-up of osteoporosis.
METHODS: We evaluated the feasibility of a clinical approach to osteoporosis treatment with in-hospital zoledronic acid (ZOL) infusion, screening for secondary osteoporosis, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) with a vertebral fracture ass

Background: In recent years, aspirin use has been controversial for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events. Numerous clinical trials have proven that aspirin does not improve outcomes and increases major bleeding rates. Despite clinical trial data and guideline recommendations, there remains a large number of older adults taking aspirin for primary prevention. Objective: Describe the impact that pharmacists had on the discontinuation of inappropriately prescribed aspirin in a geriatric primary care clinic. Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients

Superficial siderosis (SS) is a rare neurodegenerative condition caused by chronic or recurrent bleeding into the subarachnoid space, leading to the deposition of hemosiderin in the subpial layers of the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, or cranial nerves. SS is categorized into two main forms based on its anatomical distribution: cortical superficial siderosis (cSS) and infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS). Among these, iSS is further subdivided into Type 1 (classical iSS) and Type 2 (secondary iSS). Classical iSS refers to cases in which there is no radiologically confirmed single spontan

Myiasis is a human parasitic disease caused by fly larvae that is rarely found in the oral cavity. Poor oral hygiene among older males can lead to intraoral myiasis. This report describes a rare case of severe, atypical pain caused by maxillary periodontal myiasis in an elderly disabled patient. Maggots infested the hard palate near the anterior maxillary teeth. Despite a radiological examination showing no significant hard tissue alterations, numerous maggots were manually extracted from a hole in the anterior hard palate. Surgical tooth extraction and maggot removal were both performed under

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is an underdiagnosed neuropsychiatric condition, with only a few studies focusing on medical sequalae among elderly populations. Delayed treatment results in complications with high morbidity and mortality. Among elderly individuals, one such complication is urinary retention. Urinary retention can result in prolonged catheter use. In geriatric populations, prolonged use of catheters become particularly concerning and problematic as it can limit patient mobility, are potential sources for infection, and increase the risk for delirium. Catheter use has been independently a

The older incarcerated adult is a vulnerable and overlooked demographic within the U.S. healthcare system, facing high mortality rates due to chronic conditions and age-related issues such as cognitive decline, mobility impairments, and sensory deficits. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care's (NCCHC) position statement on "Care for Aging Patients in the Correctional Setting" is a pivotal step in addressing healthcare gaps for this population. In this article, we underscore the urgent need for a holistic, age-appropriate care model in correctional settings to ensure equitable car

The prevalence of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections has been on the rise in recent years, especially among the elderly population and other immunocompromised groups. Risk factors for NTM infections include advanced age, preexisting pulmonary diseases, and low body mass index. This study presents a case of NTM pulmonary disease attributed to Mycobacterium intracellulare, which was rapidly identified using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). An 82-year-old male presented with persistent fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Initial assessments revealed an elevated white b
