We report a case of successful treatment of propylene glycol toxicity by discontinuation of propylene glycol administration and hemodialysis therapy. A critically ill woman receiving high dose intravenous lorazepam therapy is described. Although propylene glycol toxicity often resolves promptly after discontinuation of the causative parenteral source, renal or liver dysfunction may prolong the sequelae of propylene glycol infusion. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolyte solution can induce potentially fatal complications when used as a lavage in preoperative bowel preparation. A 60-year-old man with carcinoma of the esophagogastric junction had a Mallory-Weiss tear after bowel preparation with PEG. He was successfully resuscitated, first with balanced salt solution then by transfusion. The literature on the subject is reviewed and recommendations are made, which include consideration of alternative methods of bowel preparation (e.g., sodium phosphate solution) in patients with esophageal obstruction.

The paper describes a new polymerization system for embedding soft tissues in glycol methacrylate (GMA). The polymerization of GMA is initiated by means of a barbituric acid derivative in combination with chloride ions and dibenzoyl peroxide. The catalyst system contains no aromatic amines which constitutes a toxicological advantage over the commonly employed system of peroxide/aromatic amine. Clear blocks are obtained from which 1-2 micrometers sections are easy to cut. In combination with an appropriate softener, polyethylene glycol 400, serial sectioning may be practiced.
