Evaluation of pupillary functions in adult vitamin D deficiency patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the pupillary dynamics in patients with serum vitamin D (25(OH)-D) levels below normal and compared with healthy controls. METHODS: This study included 132 patients and 76 healthy controls. Serum 25(OH)-D concentrations within the range of 10 to 30 ng/mL were classified as vitamin D insufficiency (VDI, Group 1), while those at or below 10 ng/mL were categorized as vitamin D deficiency (VDD, Group 2). The static phase of pupillometry, including scotopic, mesopic, and photopic pupil diameters, was evaluated. Additionally, in the dynamic phase of pupillometric evaluation, pu

The Relationship Between Dynamic Balance Ability and Shoulder Pain in High School Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic balance is essential for pitching motion because pitching kinematics requires whole body coordination. The Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and the Y balance test (YBT) evaluate dynamic balance quantitatively. There are some reports that investigated the relationship between SEBT/YBT and pain in upper and lower extremities, but there is no study among high school baseball pitchers. HYPOTHESIS: Dynamic balance deficiency is associated with shoulder pain among high school baseball pitchers. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: A tota

Unraveling the brain dynamics of Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder: a dynamic functional network connectivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder (DPD), a prevalent psychiatric disorder, fundamentally disrupts self-consciousness and could significantly impact the quality of life of those affected. While existing research has provided foundational insights for this disorder, the limited exploration of brain dynamics in DPD hinders a deeper understanding of its mechanisms. It restricts the advancement of diagnosis and treatment strategies. To address this, our study aimed to explore the brain dynamics of DPD. METHODS: In our study, we recruited 84 right-handed DPD patients and 67 healt

Local Anesthetic Cardiac Toxicity Is Mediated by Cardiomyocyte Calcium Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting local anesthetic use for perioperative pain control is limited by possible cardiotoxicity (e.g., arrhythmias and contractile depression), potentially leading to cardiac arrest. Off-target cardiac sodium channel blockade is considered the canonical mechanism behind cardiotoxicity; however, it does not fully explain the observed toxicity variability between anesthetics. The authors hypothesize that more cardiotoxic anesthetics (e.g., bupivacaine) differentially perturb other important cardiomyocyte functions (e.g., calcium dynamics), which may be exploited to mitigate dr

Recombinant High-Mobility Group Box 1 (rHMGB1) Promotes NRF2-Independent Mitochondrial Fusion through CXCR4/PSMB5-Mediated Drp1 Degradation in Endothelial Cells.

Mitochondrial dynamics plays an important role in maintaining normal endothelial cell function and in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. It is not identified whether high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a representative damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule, could influence mitochondrial dynamics in endothelial cells. The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of HMGB1 on mitochondrial dynamics in endothelial cells and the underlying mechanism. EA.hy926 human endothelial cells were incubated with recombinant HMGB1 (rHMGB1); mitochondrial morphology was observed w

[Dynamics of leptin plasma levels after abdominal surgical procedures].

UNLABELLED: In addition to its basic role as regulator of the amount of body fat and food intake leptin plays a part also as an acute phase reactant. A rise of the leptin level during this period may be associated with anorexia and cachexia in relation to general inflammatory manifestations. The objective of the present study was to characterize the dynamics of the leptin concentration in patients after intraabdominal surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The prospective study was implemented in a group of 16 men subjected to planned surgery--resection of colorectal carcinoma. The plasma leptin conc

Dynamic Knee Stability and Movement Strategy During a Forward Lunge After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Comparison of Individuals With and Without Knee Pain.

Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and knee pain (symptomatic) have demonstrated reduced knee extensor strength and similar knee joint loading during a forward lunge (FL) as compared with those without pain (asymptomatic) 3-10 years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Still, the dynamic knee joint stability during FL may differ between the groups. This study examined dynamic knee stability, measured by knee wobble through 3D kinematic modeling, to explore if symptomatic individuals exhibit more mediolateral knee wobble than asymptomatic individuals. Dynamic Balance Control during Gait in Patients with Post-stroke Hemiplegia.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of falls in patients with stroke is high, which may be related to their posture during hemiplegic gait. However, no study has examined the relationship between the dynamic stability of the center of mass (COM) and postural evaluation during hemiplegic gait. This study investigated the differences in dynamic stability of the COM during gait between patients with stroke and hemiplegia and healthy older adults, based on the margin of stability (MOS). METHODS: The MOS was calculated during gait in 22 patients with hemiplegia (hemiplegic group: 10 men/12 women) and 24 hea

Masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer combined with static suspension: Evaluation and validation of facial symmetry in patients with different levels of asymmetry.

One-stage combined dynamic reanimation with static suspension has obvious advantages of improving facial symmetry. In clinical observation, patients with different levels of oral commissure drooping achieve different symmetry outcomes, despite undergoing the same surgical procedure. Patients with slight asymmetry obtain better outcomes than those with severe asymmetry. The mechanisms influencing postoperative outcomes have not been systematically explored. We retrospectively analyzed 44 patients performed with masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer combined with static suspension. Patients were d

Aberrant brain dynamics in major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) is a common symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD). Accumulating studies demonstrated that MDD with SI was associated with static alterations in brain activity and functional connectivity. However, given that brain is a highly dynamic system, the changes of brain dynamic patterns in MDD with SI remain unknown. METHODS: We included 60 MDD patients with SI (MDD-SI), 58 MDD patients without SI (MDD-NSI), and 58 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. The sliding-window approach was used to calculate the dyna

Development of oculomotor functioning in preadolescence, adolescence, and adulthood.

We examined developmental differences in smooth pursuit eye tracking proficiency in a large sample of preadolescent, adolescent, and adult males. Smooth pursuit was quantified using general measures of oculomotor functioning and by examining the frequency and dynamic characteristics of specific saccadic events. Examination of age effects using general measures indicated that, by late adolescence, the smooth pursuit system reached adult levels of functioning. No significant differences were found between the adolescent and adult groups on most global measures. However, both groups had better ey

Predictors and Trajectories of Negative and Positive Interpersonal Dynamics in Remission From Alcohol Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research has established social networks as a critical determinant of recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet limited research exists investigating quality of interpersonal dynamics, especially during the transition to remission from AUD. Positive interpersonal dynamics (friendship and emotional support) may reinforce recovery, whereas negative interpersonal dynamics (hostility and rejection) may undermine it. Identifying determinants of interpersonal dynamic trajectories, including remission, may guide the development of personalized interventions. METHOD: Naturalistic pros

Phosphorylation of Dynamin-Related Protein 1 (DRP1) Regulates Mitochondrial Dynamics and Skeletal Muscle Wasting in Cancer Cachexia.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a syndrome characterized by skeletal muscle atrophy, and the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. Recent research studies have shed light on a noteworthy link between mitochondrial dynamics and muscle physiology. In the present study, we investigate the role of dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), a pivotal factor of mitochondrial dynamics, in myotube atrophy during cancer-associated cachexia. METHODS: Seventy-six surgical patients, including gastrointestinal tumor and benign disease, were enrolled in the study and divided to three groups: cont
