The nipples of male tan guinea pigs were used to test the effects on the skin of oral contraceptive pills and drugs. The daily topically applied doses were 1/2,000 of a pill. After 3 weeks, the nipples treated with solutions of ethinyloestradiol-containing pills had grown (200-300%), the epidermis showed acanthosis (150-250%) and strong hyperpigmentation. Mestranol-containing pills as well as pure progestogen substances did not produce these effects.

Two different animal models were studied to determine whether localized upper respiratory tract viral infection was associated with suppression of systemic cell-mediated immunity. Erythromycin and rifampicin (rifampin) were able to prevent death of guineapigs given intraperitoneal injections of the agent causing legionnaires' disease. Penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and gentamicin showed no significant effect. An epidemiological survey of guinea worm infection was carried out in 17 rural village communities north of Ibadan in western Nigeria from 1971 to 1975. The incidence was 13.5% in a population of 8,200. The sexes were equally affected although there were significantly more cases amongst boys than girls. A method for detecting Junin virus viremia in guinea pigs is described. The method consists of infecting BHK-21 cells with blood samples from infected guinea pigs; 48 h later, Junin virus antigens are detected in the cells by indirect immunofluorescence. Application of this technique to patients with Argentine hemorrhagic fever may lead to the quickest method for the virologic diagnosis of this disease.

Guinea-pigs infected in the liver with the Biswas strain of Entamoeba histolytica showed no dermal hypersensitivity but showed positive lymphocyte transformation and macrophage-migration inhibition. The time sequence showed an activated response at 4 days after infection, a full response at 8 days when the liver abscesses were resolving and a waning response at 12 days when the abscesses had healed.
