The discovery of Helicobacter pylori as an important gastric pathogen and as one of the most common bacterial infections, now more than a decade ago, completely changed our concepts of both gastroduodenal disease and the immunobiology of the stomach. The presence of incomplete colonic type of intestinal metaplasia (IM) is regarded as a risk factor for gastric carcinoma. In this study, we attempted to classify the subtypes of IM in our patients and examine their relationship to Helicobacter pylori (HP). Gastric biopsies were obtained from 210 patients. A randomized, single-blind study was designed to assess the effect of lansoprazole alone and lansoprazole plus amoxicillin on the healing and eradication rates in Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease. Seventy-nine patients with gastric ulcers and 54 patients with duodenal ulcers were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. The decision to treat a patient should in general always be based on potential risk and advantage. Widespread and uncontrolled use of all kinds of anti-H. pylori regimens may promote development of antimicrobial resistant strains. UNLABELLED: Helicobacter pylori is a gram negative curved bacillus recognized as etiologic agent of chronic gastritis and an important factor in the development of duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer. The purpose of this work is to evaluate three microbiologic methods for diagnosing H. pylori infection. We studied 375 samples from 218 patients, who consulted at the Department of Gastroenterology of the Hospital Vargas and were candidates for endoscopy.
