Ascarids and ancylostomatids are the most important parasites affecting dogs and cats worldwide, in terms of diffusion and risk for animal and human health. Different misconceptions have led the general public and pet owners to minimize the importance of these intestinal worms. A low grade of interest is also registered among veterinary professions, although there is a significant merit in keeping our guard up against these parasites. This article reviews current knowledge of ascarids and ancylostomatids, with a special focus on pathogenicity, epidemiology and control methods in veterinary and

Over a billion people in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Americas are infected with one or more helminth species, causing morbidity that helps maintain the vicious cycle of poverty, decreased productivity, and inadequate socioeconomic development. This report presents an evaluation of current research and challenges in controlling the helminthiases of public health importance, including onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases, schistosomiasis, food-borne trematodiases and taeniasis/cysticercosis. The evaluation covers five major themes--intervention, epidemiology

Echinococcosis is rarely encountered as a cystic brain disease. In this article we are presenting a case of a young woman repeatedly operated due to echinococcosis of lung, heart and brain. Recurrent brain ecchinococcosis developed despite preoperative and postoperative albendazol therapy after first and combined therapy with albendazol and praziquantel after the second brain surgery. The mechanism of recurrence remains unclear (primary infestation, dissemination after spontaneous or intraoperative cyst rupture or new infestation).

More than two billion people (one-third of humanity) are infected with parasitic roundworms or flatworms, collectively known as helminth parasites. These infections cause diseases that are responsible for enormous levels of morbidity and mortality, delays in the physical development of children, loss of productivity among the workforce, and maintenance of poverty. Genomes of the major helminth species that affect humans, and many others of agricultural and veterinary significance, are now the subject of intensive genome sequencing and annotation. Draft genome sequences of the filarial worm Bru

The established risk factors for atherosclerosis fail to fully explain the extent and severity of coronary artery diseases in 50% of the patients. Thus, the causative agents and processes, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, are being sought. Notoriously, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular event rates are much lower in developing countries. Clinically, severe infections by intracellular pathogens are widespread mostly in developing countries with poor sanitation, nutrition and massive worm infections. A link between atherosclerosis and helminth infections has never be

Elaphostrongylus cervi produces a subclinical cerebrospinal disease in many wild and domestic ruminants from Europe, North America and New Zealand and has recently been described in Spain. To determine some aspects of its epidemiology, 121 red deer (Cervus elaphus) from central Spain were sampled during 2000. The prevalence (7%) and mean worm burden (3.8 worms per brain) were similar to the values previously recorded in other European areas. The infection was only detected in young deer during the winter. The estimation of larval production in the faeces was not a reliable method of diagnosing

Biliary parasitosis is one of the common causes of biliary obstruction in developing countries and can often be confused with stone disease. With increased worldwide travel and immigration, these conditions are not limited to the developing countries alone. Ascariasis, hydatid liver disease, clonorchiasis, and fascioliasis are the commonly encountered parasitic infestations of the biliary tract usually presenting with biliary colic or cholangitis. Endoscopy has an important role in the diagnosis and emergent management of these conditions and in elective endoscopic therapy of associated compli

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: It is over 25 years ago since the original animal research was conducted into albendazole. This review highlights some important steps in fundamental research and the management of helminth disease that have occurred in the past year, appearing in the published literature.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years there have been several published studies on lymphatic filariasis and on the impact of albendazole treatment on growth and nutrition. Recent work consolidates some of these data and supplies substantive evidence of benefit especially in the area of hookworm anaemia. Why tr

In this review recent morphological and histochemical descriptions have been compiled of (mainly outer) features of all developmental stages of the Acanthocephala as well as what is known about the host's defence measures directed against these worms. From acanthors, for instance, it is documented how they escape melanization inside the haemocoel of a suitable intermediate host after they have been activated and released from their eggshell enclosure in the gut of the arthropod. Acanthors possess a complex set of eggshell-envelopes and interstices that fulfil different tasks. While the sequenc

Stool samples from 93 Thais working in Israel were examined for the presence of parasites. The overall prevalence of infection by 1 or more species was 74%. Opisthorchis viverrini and hookworm were the most prevalent parasites (51.6% and 44.1%, respectively). They were also the parasites most frequently found in mixed infections; about a quarter of the workers were infected with both. Other helminths found in only a few cases were: Fasciolopsis buski (3 cases), Taenia sp. (3), Paragonimus sp. (1), Ascaris lumbricoides (1), Trichuris trichiura (1) and Trichostrongylus sp. (1).

In Ituri (Upper-Zaïre) pig farming is extensively and traditionally managed, animals wandering about in the villages and neighbouring fields. Helminths of the gastrointestinal tract most commonly encountered are Oesophagostomum sp. Hyostrongylus rubidus, Globocephalus urosubulatus and Ascarops strongylina. Parasitic burdens are low and gross lesions not frequently seen except nodules of oesophagostomiasis. Infections with Metastrongylus salmi and Metastrongylus pudendoctus have a very high prevalence (between 64 and 86%) causing gross lesions of pneumonia on the diaphragmatic lobes. The presen

92.3% schoolchildren aged 6-13 years of a mexican rural village, suspected foci of Taenia solium cysticercosis were screened for intestinal parasites with the main purpose to know the infection rate by taeniasis. An stool sample was collected to schoolchildren of the village and 95.4% of a urban private school as comparative group. Laboratory examinations were performed with the most accurate technics, included microscopies with an ocular micrometer. The general parasitation rate was 4 times higher in the rural village, but the percentages of Taenia spp. infection were 0.6% both of them. Entam

Children with mixed helminthic infections between the ages of 2 and 14 years, from a slum area, were treated with two regimes of albendazole. A majority of children had moderate to heavy infections with Trichuris trichiura (greater than 70%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (greater than 84%). Children treated with a single 400 mg dose of albendazole showed a very good response in ascariasis with 100% cure rate irrespective of the severity of infection. In Trichuriasis (n = 40), a cure rate of 50% was observed in mild infections, but only a reduction in the egg counts of 60% and 57% respectively were

The paper presents results of epidemiological-clinical studies of digestive system parasitoses in persons (seamen and other professional groups) back from the tropics. The author carried out multidirectional examinations (general medical with rectoscopy, laboratiorial: parasitological, microbiological, mycological and epidemiological) of 3,315 persons. The results were evaluated statistically. He defined the frequency of particular parasite invasion in men in dependence on region of stay, profession, length of service and age, and frequency of occurrence of symptomatic parasitoses as well as c

Investigation carried out in an area of Benue State which had been found to be endemic for onchocerciasis showed that the area was also endemic for intestinal parasites especially hookworm, ascariasis and amoebiasis. 67% of the 1538 stools examined carried helminth eggs and/or protozoan cysts and 15% of the 685 urine specimens examined possessed ova of S. haematobium. Incidence of hookworm infection ascariasis and schistosomiasis was higher in the younger age groups (1-30 years) while that of amoebiasis was higher in the older age groups. Insects caught while biting humans include Tabanus, Hae
