OBJECTIVE: To determine the reason(s) why serologic tests for Lyme disease are performed, who initiates the test requests, and how the test results are used in a clinical setting.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort.
SETTING: Prepaid health plan in northern California.
PATIENTS: Consecutive sample of 117 patients for whom at least one serologic test for Lyme disease was performed during a 3-month period.

The effectiveness of a surveillance program for breast cancer recurrence in extending survival is predicated on two assumptions: 1) most recurrences are detected at an early stage at surveillance visits; and 2) the early treatment of recurrence offers a better chance of cure or longer survival. However, the data suggest that neither of these two assumptions is correct, and that postoperative follow-up of patients with breast cancer is expensive and does not significantly extend survival.

Recent studies have shown that nasal CPAP is very effective in the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). To clarify the characteristics of pulmonary function testing and to evaluate the effect of short term nasal CPAP therapy in 13 cases of OSA patients, nasal CPAP was used for 10 to 14 days and polysonography was performed on two consecutive nights without nasal CPAP and at one night with nasal CPAP. Pulmonary function tests and the Uchida-Kraepelin test were performed before the initiation of nasal CPAP therapy and also 7 to 14 days after the nasal CPAP therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL) is a common cause of lymphocytosis in older individuals. Although cytogenetic/molecular testing is usually reserved for patients requiring treatment, recent studies suggest that early testing may have a prognostic benefit in MBL and early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We evaluated local practices of expanded diagnostics in the MBL/CLL population to assess (1) adherence to international workshop on CLL (iwCLL) guidelines with respect to additional cytogenetic testing and (2) anticipated costs of expanded diagnostic testing.
