Unusual complications in traumatic dislocation of the hip in children.

Four cases of unusual complications following traumatic dislocation of the hip in children are presented along with a review of the literature. All patients presented with posterior or posterosuperior dislocations, and two had associated pelvic or acetabular fractures. One patient had a small, shallow acetabulum caused by premature closure of the triradiate cartilage and damage to the superior gluteal nerve. The combination of triradiate epiphyseal closure and abductor muscle weakness secondary to superior gluteal nerve damage contributed to subsequent femoral head subluxation. One patient pre

[Autogenous femoral head bone grafting combined with total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of old dislocation of hip joint center in 16 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study effects of autogenous femoral head bone grafting combined with total hip replacement for the treatment of old center dislocation of hip joint, and to evaluate the superiority of acetabular defect reconstruction with autogenous bone. METHODS: From March 2008 to December 2013, 16 patients (16 hips) with old center dislocation of hip joint were treated with autologous bone graft combined with total hip replacement. There were 11 males and 5 females, ranging in age from 41 to 72 years old, with an average of 56.3 years old. The duration of the disease ranged from 3.6 to 37.2 y

Fall-related injuries in long-term oxygen therapy: Incidence and predictive factors.

INTRODUCTION: Fall-related injuries are a common cause of morbidity and impaired quality of life among patients with severe respiratory disease. Use of long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) may be associated with a further increased risk. METHODS: This was a longitudinal study of patients starting LTOT between 2006 and 2023 in the Swedish DISCOVERY cohort. Rates of healthcare contact due to three types of fall-related injuries (distal radius fracture, hip fracture, and skull trauma) were compared to those of age- and sex-matched population controls using nationwide registries. For patients on LTOT,

Serious road injuries in The Netherlands dissected.

OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the characteristics and injury patterns of serious road injuries (Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale [MAIS] 2+ inpatients) in The Netherlands. METHODS: In The Netherlands, the actual number of serious injuries is estimated by linking police data to hospital data. The distribution of serious road injuries over (1) travel mode and gender and (2) crash type and age are compared for the years 2000 and 2011. Moreover, the distribution of the injuries over the body regions is illustrated using colored injury body profiles. RESULTS: The number of serious injuries is

The Impact of Anterior Pelvic Tilt on Return to Duty/Return to Run in Active Duty Personnel After Hip Arthroscopy for Femoroacetabular Impingement.

INTRODUCTION: Annually, 300,000 soldiers are rendered medically nondeployable because of musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs). Of this population, nearly 10,000 (3.3%) involve injuries to the hip. Factors related to these injuries impose significant healthcare, financial, and readiness burdens on the Army system, degrading overall mission readiness. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess for correlation between increased anterior pelvic tilt and a lower likelihood for return to duty/return to run (RTD/RTR) in active duty personnel who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular i

Exploring Lower Limb Biomechanical Differences in Competitive Aerobics Athletes of Different Ability Levels During Rotational Jump Landings.

High-level (HL) and low-level (LL) competitive aerobics athletes demonstrate different landing patterns during rotational jump landings, resulting in differing risks of lower limb injuries. This research aimed to investigate biomechanical differences between different levels of competitive aerobics athletes during rotational jump landings. The subjects included 15 male HL athletes and 15 LL athletes. This study captured kinematics, kinetics, muscle activation, and muscle force data, calculating joint stiffness, energy dissipation, anterior tibial shear force (ATSF), and patellofemoral joint co

Open reduction and internal stabilization of acetabular fractures in pregnancy--case report.

Pelvic and acetabular fractures are common injuries in the time of rising traffic level and often affect young people, that's why this kind of injury during pregnancy must be considered. Despite lapse of years this subject is seldom raised in literature. Conservative treatment was usually recommended. We came across a single case report of surgical treatment of acetabular fracture during pregnancy, it was 18th week of pregnancy at the moment of accident. The aim of this study is detailed description of surgical treatment of hip joint acetabular fracture with fragment dislocation of 29 years ol

Current status of patients with hip fracture in Japan: A nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Although surgical treatment is the standard of care for most hip fractures, the post-fracture management of osteoporosis remains challenging. This study aimed to elucidate the status of osteoporosis treatment, subsequent fracture rates, mortality rates, and changes in residential status and care levels among hip fracture patients in Japan, and to explore strategies for fracture prevention and extension of healthy life expectancy. METHODS: This study included patients with hip fractures treated at approximately 3000 orthopaedic facilities nationwide during July 2020. Data was colle

[Fractures of the femoral head].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The authors summarize their experience in the diagnosis and therapy of femoral head fractures with the aim to make an analysis of the femoral head fractures, a retrospective evaluation of the group of patients and determine diagnostic and therapeutic criteria. MATERIAL: The group of patients comprises 60 patients with the injury of 61 hips in the period of 10 years. The follow-up comprised all hips with any injury of the head. On this basis an extensive group of patients was developed including 31 fractures of Type I-III after Pipkin and 30 fractures of Type IV. The aver

Ultrasound is an accurate imaging modality for diagnosing hip luxation in dogs presenting with hind limb lameness.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of ultrasound for diagnosing hip luxation in dogs presenting for hind limb lameness. METHODS: 24 client-owned dogs presenting with pelvic limb lameness and concern for hip luxation were enrolled in this prospective diagnostic accuracy study from April 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022. An experienced ultrasonographer and a novice ultrasonographer, both masked to the diagnoses, performed hip ultrasonography using a point-of-care ultrasound machine. The experienced evaluator also performed a more comprehensive ultrasonography with a high-end ultrasound machine to cha

Common femoral artery transection during total hip arthroplasty for a neglected septic hip dislocation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular injury during total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a rare but life-threatening complication. Severe anatomical distortion, particularly in complex hip pathology, may substantially increase this risk. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old woman with a history of childhood septic arthritis presented with a chronically dislocated hip and advanced joint destruction. During THA, a sudden massive hemorrhage occurred during acetabular exposure. The postoperative absence of distal pulses and a sensorimotor deficit raised suspicion of acute limb ischemia. Computed tomography (CT) angiogra

Biomechanical Changes in the Lower Limb After a Quadriceps Fatigue Task in Association With Dynamic Knee Valgus.

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic knee valgus (DKV), characterized by knee abduction and external rotation, has been associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, but the predictive accuracy of DKV for ACL injury remains unclear. METHODS: This controlled laboratory study examined fatigue effects on lower limb biomechanics and electromyography (EMG) during jump landing in healthy men. Participants were categorized into induced (n=11) and non-induced (n=8) DKV groups based on changes in knee abduction moment after a fatigue task. RESULTS: Compared to the non-induced DKV group, the induced group e
