Validation of diagnosis algorithms for ankylosing spondylitis in claim-based database.

BACKGROUND: Claims-based algorithms using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes have become a common approach for researchers to define ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in studies. To address potential misclassification bias caused by the claim-based algorithms, we conducted the current study to validate whether these algorithms of medical claims could accurately represent AS diagnoses. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with AS based on ICD codes were retrieved from the electronic medical records database at a Taiwanese medical center (Chung Shan University Hospital, Taiwan). After random

Distinguishing Admissions Specifically for COVID-19 From Incidental SARS-CoV-2 Admissions: National Retrospective Electronic Health Record Study.

BACKGROUND: Admissions are generally classified as COVID-19 hospitalizations if the patient has a positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. However, because 35% of SARS-CoV-2 infections are asymptomatic, patients admitted for unrelated indications with an incidentally positive test could be misclassified as a COVID-19 hospitalization. Electronic health record (EHR)-based studies have been unable to distinguish between a hospitalization specifically for COVID-19 versus an incidental SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization. Although the need to improve classification of COVID-19 versus incide

[Ebola Virus Disease (EVD): proposed guideline for hospital triage of suspect and probable cases].

The magnitude of the present Ebola epidemic and the resonance in the media has led to the need to draw clear guidelines for the health personnel potentially involved, since the fears raised by the high lethality of the disease may create inefficiencies Here we present the guidelines for a medium-sized hospital, where, at present, the chance to confront a case of Ebola virus disease is rare, but not impossible. The role and activities of each professional involved and the procedures have been set out. We think that this exercise will be useful for all structureswith characteristics similar to o

Thrombosis prophylaxis in medical patients: a retrospective review of clinical practice patterns.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The risk of venous thromboembolism in medical patients is comparable to the risk in general surgical patients. Thromboprophylaxis is recommended for specific medical patients, but its use in clinical practice is unknown. DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the charts of consecutive patients discharged from 2 departments of Internal Medicine, one in the teaching hospital of Varese and one in the non-teaching hospital of Angera, Italy, from October to December 2000. We selected the charts of patients with clinical conditions at increased risk of

Recorded Human Leishmaniasis and Notification Gaps in Central Tuscany, Italy, 2014-2024: a Multisource Surveillance Study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether mandatory notification adequately captures recorded human leishmaniasis in Central Tuscany, Italy, by describing source-specific trends during 2014-2024 and evaluating notification completeness for 2022-2024. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multisource surveillance study using laboratory-positive records, mandatory notifications and first leishmaniasis-coded hospital discharge records. For 2022-2024, records from the three sources were deterministically linked at the individual level; observed notification completeness was defined as the proportion of linke

Pharmacy-nursing report form used to monitor and adjust schedules of large volume parenteral solutions.

The use of an i.v. report form to regularly monitor and adjust the schedules of large volume parenteral solutions and irrigations is discussed. The departments of pharmaceutical services and nursing instituted a program that allowed both departments to compare the schedules of large volume parenterals and irrigations for each shift. This program centers around the use of an i.v. report form, for which clinical nurses record information concerning the progress of i.v. fluids and irrigations. The completed report is forwarded to the pharmacy, where pharmacy personnel use the information to conti

Using a deterministic matching computer routine to identify hospital episodes in a Brazilian de-identified administrative database for the analysis of obstetrics hospitalisations.

INTRODUCTION: The absence of a unique patient identifier in the Brazilian hospital administrative database prevents the identification of hospital episodes with multiple hospitalisations of the same patient. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the information gain by using a computer routine to identify acute Obstetrics hospital episodes and its impact on assessing marks of case severity. METHODS: The data source was a de-identified Brazilian hospital administrative database from 2017 to 2020, including hospitalisations records of women of reproductive age (10 to 49 years old) for treati

[Diversity of bedside pretransfusion ABO compatibility devices in metropolitan France].

To prevent the occurrence of the ABO incidental incompatibility, the bedside pretransfusion ABO control is mandatory in France since 37 years. If the quality of the reagents is regularly controlled, no technical specification exists concerning the type of support. To describe the different types of devices used by the French hospitals, a brief questionnaire was sent, from December 2000 to March 2001, to each hemovigilance correspondent working in the 1782 hospitals with transfusion activity in 1999. Every participant had to send back the device used in his establishment. The rate of replies wa

Improvement in transfusion safety using a specially designed transfusion wristband.

Fatal haemolytic transfusion reaction due to ABO incompatibility occurs mainly as a result of clerical error. A blood sample drawn from the wrong patient and labelled as another patient's will not be detected by the blood bank unless there is a previous ABO grouping result. We report here the detection of such clerical error by the use of a specially designed transfusion wristband. The wristband has the following special features: (i) once attached, it cannot be removed except by cutting; (ii) it has a pocket containing a transfusion label; (iii) a unique transfusion barcode is printed on each

Falls Among Older Adults in Türkiye: A Nationwide Analysis of Emergency Medical Service Data.

Background/Objectives: Many ambulance-attended falls among older adults are not represented in hospital-based datasets. We used emergency medical service (EMS) records to describe residential and non-residential falls and identify factors associated with non-residential fall location and hospital transfer. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed records from Türkiye's 112 EMS system from January 2023 through October 2025. The analytic sample comprised 685,666 records; no age-eligible records were excluded for missing study variables. Fall-location associations were examined using chi-square tests

Factors associated with under-reporting of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in cause-of-death records: A comparative study of two national databases in France from 2008 to 2012.

OBJECTIVE: To date, no study has evaluated the detection rate of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in cause-of-death records in Europe. Our objectives were to compare the number of deaths attributable to HNSCC from two national databases in France and to identify factors associated with under-reporting of HNSCC in cause-of-death records. METHODS: The national hospital discharge database and the national underlying cause-of-death records were compared for all HNSCC-attributable deaths in adult patients from 2008 to 2012 in France. Factors associated with under-reporting of HNSCC in

Reducing omission of eye drops during hospital admission.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Chronic ophthalmic conditions, such as glaucoma and dry eye disease, are frequently encountered debilitating eye conditions that can lead to substantial reduction in vision and quality of life. However, there is ongoing evidence to suggest that topical ophthalmic therapy is inappropriately omitted on admission to hospital. The primary aim of this audit was to investigate the trust adherence to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guideline on the prescribing standard of eye drops during hospital admission. The secondary aim was to raise awareness and ensure su
