Streetview greenspace types and dementia risk in older adults: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

Greenspace has been associated with lower dementia risk, but most studies have used satellite-derived measures that cannot distinguish vegetation types. We used streetview (SV)-based metrics of greenspace from an on-the-ground perspective to examine greenspace types that may be relevant for dementia risk. We followed 6761 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, 2000-2018. Using deep learning algorithms applied to SV images, we measured %trees, %grass, %other green (plants/flowers/fields) in the 500 m area around participants' residences. We examined the controlled direct e

How self-governance willingness and participation efficacy shape residents' satisfaction with urban public services: Evidence from neighborhood renewal in Hangzhou, China.

Using an original survey of 2,202 households across 36 renewed neighborhoods in Hangzhou, China, this study examines how resident agency-operationalized as self-governance willingness and participation efficacy-shapes satisfaction with urban public services within a legally structured participatory governance context. To address endogeneity, we estimate two-stage least squares models with district and street fixed effects, instrumenting self-governance willingness with distance to the provincial government offices and participation efficacy with policy awareness and community involvement; inst

A Geographically Sensitive Neighborhood Exposome-Wide Association Study for Breast Cancer Survival.

IMPORTANCE: Growing literature recognizes the importance of contextual influences on outcomes across the cancer continuum, beyond those of individual biological and lifestyle factors. These contextual influences represent a neighborhood exposome consisting of socioeconomic, demographic, and built environmental factors. OBJECTIVE: To identify which neighborhood-level factors are most relevant for cancer outcomes and determine the geographic scale of their operation. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study of women with a primary diagnosis of breast cancer developed a geographical

Protective vs. punitive informal social control: A multilevel mediation study of neighborhood effects on child sexual abuse in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: While neighborhood collective efficacy is theorized to promote community intervention against child maltreatment, the mechanisms of informal social control (ISC) through protective versus punitive pathways remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine whether the association between collective-efficacy-based neighborhood ISC and contact child sexual abuse (CSA) is differentially mediated by protective versus punitive child-maltreatment-specific ISC (ISC_CM) in Nepal. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were drawn from a two-wave, nationally representative sample of

Sex-based associations between neighborhood disadvantage and brain-gut alterations in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a stress-sensitive disorder that exhibits sex differences in brain-gut-microbiome interactions. Neighborhood disadvantage is a chronic stressor that may influence brain-gut-microbiome health in patients with IBS, potentially contributing to clinical profiles in a sex-specific manner. This study evaluated sex-based associations between neighborhood disadvantage and clinical characteristics, cortical morphology, and Prevotella relative abundance (a sex-specific microbial marker in IBS) in individuals with IBS compared to healthy controls (HCs). Community and household-level incarceration and its association with mental health in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of families.

This study examines the association between community incarceration rates, household incarceration, and the mental health of parents and children. Participant families had children ages 5-9 (n = 1307) from the African American, Latinx, Hmong, Somali/Ethiopian, Native American, and White communities in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Linear mixed models were used to estimate associations between parent and child mental health, household incarceration exposure, and census tract race, ethnicity and gender-specific incarceration rates matched to the family's home address and race/ethnicity. Two Decades of Change in Living Arrangements and Health of Middle-Aged and Older Adults in the U.S., 1997-2018.

Although living arrangements of American adults have changed significantly over the past decades, we know little about changes in the association between living arrangements and health. This study uses pooled data from 1997 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey to examine trends in living arrangements and health among middle-aged (ages 40-64) and older adults (ages 65-84). The results show that increasing share of middle-aged and older adults are living with persons other than their spouses or cohabiting partners, and this living arrangement is increasingly associated with poor health. [Adjustment to a Stressful Event in the Couple: Depression of the Partner as Risk for Adjustment Disorder].

Maladaptive reactions on stressful experiences justifying a diagnosis of adjustment disorder have high prevalence. Little is known about the possible risk for clinically significant maladaptation that results from the social context. The literature on the effects of depression on communication and altered support conditions in couples is suggesting this. Aim of this study was to investigate whether clinically significant depression in the romantic partner is a risk factor for adjustment disorder following a concept of stress-response disorder. Furthermore, from a dimensional point of view a po

Household transmission investigation: Design, reporting and critical appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Household transmission investigations (HHTIs) contribute timely epidemiologic knowledge in response to emerging pathogens. HHTIs conducted in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21 reported variable methodological approaches, producing epidemiological estimates that vary in meaning, precision and accuracy. Because specific tools to assist with the optimal design and critical appraisal of HHTIs are not available, the aggregation and pooling of inferences from HHTIs to inform policy and interventions may be challenging. METHODS: In this manuscript, we discuss key aspects of

Health disparities in epilepsy: how patient-oriented outcomes in women differ from men.

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder with multiple effects on biological, social, and psychological health. Many of these effects differ between men and women, but only sparse research has specifically addressed the relevance and importance of the differences. Available evidence suggests that men and women with epilepsy have differing rates of employment and driving, and women with epilepsy have increased risk for specific mood disorders such as post-partum depression. National surveys of physicians indicate that many physicians providing care for women with epilepsy have limited knowledge of fundam

Epidemiology of acromegaly.

Acromegaly is a consequence of chronic growth hormone (GH) excess, due in the majority of cases to a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma, and occurring with a population prevalence of 60 per million and an incidence of 3-4 per million per year. Males and females appear to be equally affected with an average age of presentation of 44 years. Younger patients may have more aggressive tumours and higher GH concentrations. There is co-existent hyperprolactinaemia in about one third of cases, and a variable proportion of [figure: see text] tumours appear to have activating mutations of the gsp gene or ot

Online videos indicate human and dog behaviour preceding dog bites and the context in which bites occur.

YouTube videos of dog bites present an unexplored opportunity to observe dog bites directly. We recorded the context of bites, bite severity, victim and dog characteristics for 143 videos and for 56 videos we coded human and dog behaviour before the bite. Perceived bite severity was derived from visual aspects of the bite. Associations between bite severity and victim, dog and context characteristics were analysed using a Bayesian hierarchical regression model. Human and dog behaviour before the bite were summarised with descriptive statistics. No significant differences in bite severity were

[Human oculocutaneous albinism. From clinical observation to molecular biology].

Human oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a heritable metabolic defect transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait and characterized by a hypopigmentation of skin, hair and eyes. This defect is mainly due to an altered or absence of tyrosinase activity, the key enzyme of eu-and pheo-melanin synthesis. It is a seldom condition in white peoples but more frequent in Africans and in Afro-Americans. Albinos, especially in tropical settings, have high prevalence of solar keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma. Ocular defects characteristics of OCA are photobia, nystagmus and decreased visual acuity. Two

[Research progress of monkeypox epidemic in multiple countries].

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by Monkeypox virus, which can cause the change of smallpox pattern in human. Monkeypox has been epidemic in central and west African countries, and infections outside the African continent are rare. Since May 2022, unprecedented outbreaks of human monkeypox and clusters of cases have occurred in non-epidemic countries such as Europe, the Americas and Australia, with multi-country outbreaks drawing global attention. The prevalence, transmission route and reoccurrence of monkeypox are still unknown. In view of the rapid increase of monkeypox cases, this pap

Characterisation of Rhodococcus equi strains isolated from foals and from immunocompromised human patients.

The cultural, morphological, biochemical, serological characteristics and antibiotic susceptibility of 25 Rhodococcus equi strains isolated from lungs and lung abscesses of pneumonic foals and 5 R. equi strains isolated from immuno-compromised human patients were examined. All R. equi strains showed common cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics both with conventional tests and on the basis of their enzyme profile. The R. equi strains examined were resistant to penicillins with the exception of ampicillin, to sulphamethazine and several strains also to sulphamethoxazole-trimeth

Systemic immunosuppression by HIV infection influences HPV transcription and thus local immune responses in condyloma acuminatum.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is considered to influence the pathogenesis of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated diseases. It is not clear whether this occurs directly through molecular interactions between viral genes and/or indirectly through effects on the immune functions. In the present study we compared molecular characteristics of penile condylomas from immunocompetent and HIV-positive individuals. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR techniques we determined some characteristics of local immune responses and transcriptional activity

Neuroticism alters the transcriptome of the frontal cortex to contribute to the cognitive decline and onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Accumulating evidence has suggested that the molecular transcriptional mechanism contributes to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its endophenotypes of cognitive decline and neuropathological traits, β-amyloid (Aβ) and phosphorylated tangles (TAU). However, it is unknown what is the impact of the AD risk factors, personality characteristics assessed by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, on the human brain's transcriptome. Using postmortem human brain samples from 466 subjects, we found that neuroticism has a significant overall impact on the brain transcriptome (omnibus P = 0.005) but not the other fou

Prevalence of HIV, human papillomavirus type 16 and herpes simplex virus type 2 among female sex workers in Guinea and associated factors.

Female sex workers are at high risk for HIV infection. Sexually transmitted infections are known to be co-factors for HIV infection. Our aims were (1) to assess the prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in this population; (2) to determine the association between sociodemographic characteristics, behavioural variables, and variables related to HIV prevention and HIV infection. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Conakry, Guinea, among a convenience sample of 223 female sex workers. A questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics, risk factors, and exposure to pre
