A 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital complaining that all objects in his vision suddenly appeared small. Examination on admission revealed amnesia of recent events, recognition memory deficits, emotional disturbance, right upper quadrantanopsia and micropsia. The patient was diagnosed as posterior cerebral artery territory infarction based on brain CT scan and MRI findings which showed an ischemic lesion involving the left occipital lobe and hippocampus. We regarded the quadrantanopsia to have originated in the occipital lobe lesion and memory and emotional disturbances to have origi

Twenty-seven of eighty-eight (30.7%) Parkinsonian patients on chronic levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa therapy developed drug related dream phenomena. The patients reported three separate types of new dreams which we have classified as vivid dreams, night terrors and nightmares. These dreams are correlated to the duration of levodopa therapy although the mechanism of their production is unclear.

Neon color spreading (NCS) is an illusory color phenomenon that provides a dramatic example of surface completion and filling-in. Numerous studies have varied both spatial and temporal aspects of the neon-generating stimulus to explore variations in the strength of the effect. Here, we take a novel, parametric, low-level psychophysical approach to studying NCS in two experiments. In Experiment 1, we test the ability of both cone-isolating and equiluminant stimuli to generate neon color spreading for both increments and decrements in cone modulations. As expected, sensitivity was low to S(hort-

Psychotic symptoms and delusional beliefs have been linked to dopamine transmission in both healthy and clinical samples and are assumed to result at least in part from perceiving illusory patterns in noise. However, the existing literature on the role of dopamine in detecting patterns in noise is inconclusive. To address this issue, we assessed the effect of manipulating dopaminergic neurotransmission on illusory pattern perception in healthy individuals (n = 48, n = 19 female) in a double-blind placebo-controlled within-subjects design (see preregistration at https://osf.io/a4k9j/). We predi

We examined the utility of illusory contours (ICs) for the differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thirty-five probable DLB patients, 35 probable AD patients controlled by age, years of education, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, and 30 cognitively normal subjects controlled by age and years of education underwent visuoperceptual examinations including ICs, pentagon copying in MMSE, overlapping figures, clock drawing test, cube copying, and line orientation. Four items in ICs (ICs-4) were found to be significantly impaired in DLB compare

In stereo vision, regions with ambiguous or unspecified disparity can acquire perceived depth from unambiguous regions. This has been called stereo capture, depth interpolation or surface completion. We studied some striking induced depth effects suggesting that depth interpolation and surface completion are distinct stages of visual processing. An inducing texture (2-D Gaussian noise) had sinusoidal modulation of disparity, creating a smooth horizontal corrugation. The central region of this surface was replaced by various test patterns whose perceived corrugation was measured. When the test

Short-radius centrifugation offers a promising and affordable countermeasure to the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. However, head movements made in a fast rotating environment elicit Coriolis effects, which seriously compromise sensory and motor processes. We found that participants can adapt to these Coriolis effects when exposed intermittently to high rotation rates and, at the same time, can maintain their perceptual-motor coordination in stationary environments. In this paper, we explore the role of inter-sensory conflict in this adaptation process. Different measures (vertica

When an object is held stationary in the center of the receptive field of a tectal neuron in a toad and a textured background is moved for a period of time, some neurons produce a burst of discharges immediately after the movement of the background ceases. This effect was first found in a recent study and temporarily called 'neuronal motion after-response'. A total of 66 tectal neurons in toads were examined, and 29 out of them showed the effect. In the different neurons under investigation, the firing rate varied from a few spikes to discharges of very long duration. The appearance of the mot

The results of studying the vestibular function and the function of spatial perception in 26 cosmonauts before and after 30 space flights are discussed. The typical postflight changes in these functions were: an increase in the reactivity of the otolith organ, a decrease in the sensitivity of semicircular canals, a decline in the accuracy of perception of spatial coordinates, asymmetry of most parameters, development of illusionary reactions inflight. The cosmonauts also showed individual variations with respect to the degrees of the above responses, the dynamics and length of adaptation, the

Visual symptoms were present in 8%-88% of patients: visual hallucinations and illusions, and oculomotor disturbances being the most frequent manifestations. Oculomotor signs, including eye deviation and eyelid myoclonia, were common but non-specific for lateralization. Scalp EEG frequently demonstrated false lateralization, and only a …

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease psychosis (PDP) is a common, nonmotor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), which may affect up to 60% of patients and is associated with impaired quality of life, increased healthcare costs, and nursing home placement, among other adverse outcomes. Characteristic symptoms of PDP include illusions; visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory hallucinations; and delusions. PDP symptoms typically progress over its course from being mild, infrequent, and often untroubling to complex, sometimes constant, and potentially highly disturbing. PDP has traditionally been trea…

BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunction is the common thread between pure cortical dementia like the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia … ned to have a false belief that people were in their home (p = 0.014, OR 0.11) and had fewer visual illusions/hallucinations (p = 0.004, OR 0.107) than PDD patients.
CONCLUSION: Behavioral symptoms are helpful to distinguish bvFTD from PDD, and thus also cortical dementia with frontal-lobe dysfunction from subcortical dementia.

In medicine, diagnoses based on medical test results are probabilistic by nature. Unfortunately, cognitive illusions regarding the statistical meaning of test results are well documented among patients, medical students, and even physicians. There are two effective strategies that can foster insight into what is known as Bayesian reasoning situations: (1) translating the statistical information on the prevalence of a disease and the sensitivity and the false-alarm rate of a specific test for that disease from probabilities into natural frequencies, and (2) illustrating the statistical informat…

In visual masking, visible targets are rendered invisible by modifying the context in which they are presented, but not by modifying the targets themselves. Here I summarize a decade of experimentation using visual masking illusions in which my colleagues and I have begun to establish the minimal set of conditions necessary to maintain the awareness of the visibility of simple unattended stimuli. We have established that spatiotemporal edges must be present for targets to be visible. These spatiotemporal edges must be encoded by transient bursts of spikes in the early visual system. If these b…

Hallucinations are a common feature of certain degenerative diseases with a risk of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinson's disease. Obtaining valid epidemiological data is nevertheless quite difficult because of methodological problems. As a rule, hallucinations are more prevalent in Lewy body disease than Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease. The prevalence in parkinsonian dementia is about the same as in Lewy body disease. Complex visual hallucinations predominate, auditory or tactile hallucinations are more exceptional. Minor forms (illusions, sensat…

This paper is the second of a series; the first has been published (J Forensic Sci, 1998;43:1153-62). The goal in the initial pair of experi … er is to identify some of the speech characteristics that allowed the subjects to achieve the cited illusions. The focus here is on four paralinguistic factors: fundamental frequency (F0), speaking rate, vocal intensity, and nonfluency level. For the simulation of intoxication study, it was found that F0 was raised along with increased intoxication but rais …
