Radiomics in cervical and endometrial cancer.

Radiomics is an emerging field of research that aims to find associations between quantitative information extracted from imaging examinations and clinical data to support the best clinical decision. In the last few years, some papers have been evaluating the role of radiomics in gynecological malignancies, mainly focusing on ovarian cancer. Nonetheless, cervical cancer is the most frequent gynecological malignancy in developing countries and endometrial cancer is the most common in western countries. The purpose of this narrative review is to give an overview of the latest published papers ev

Clinical application of ultrashort echo-time MRI for lung pathologies in children.

Lung magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered to be challenging, because the low proton density of the tissue, fast signal decay, and respiratory artefacts hamper adequate image quality. MRI of the lungs and thorax is increasingly used in the paediatric population, because it is a radiation-free alternative to chest CT. Recently, ultrashort echo-time (UTE) sequences have been introduced into clinical MRI protocols, in order to improve the contrast-to-noise ratio due to reduced susceptibility artefacts and to depict structural alterations comparable to CT. The purpose of this review is to

Deep learning for identifying radiogenomic associations in breast cancer.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To determine whether deep learning models can distinguish between breast cancer molecular subtypes based on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this institutional review board-approved single-center study, we analyzed DCE-MR images of 270 patients at our institution. Lesions of interest were identified by radiologists. The task was to automatically determine whether the tumor is of the Luminal A subtype or of another subtype based on the MR image patches representing the tumor. Three different deep learning approa

Multi-atlas based detection and localization (MADL) for location-dependent quantification of white matter hyperintensities.

The extent and spatial location of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on brain MRI may be relevant to the development of cognitive decline in older persons. Here, we introduce a new method, known as the Multi-atlas based Detection and Localization (MADL), to evaluate WMH on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) data. This method simultaneously parcellates the whole brain into 143 structures and labels hyperintense areas within each WM structure. First, a multi-atlas library was established with FLAIR data of normal elderly brains; and then a multi-atlas fusion algorithm was developed by

Second-harmonic generation imaging analysis can help distinguish sarcoidosis from tuberculoid leprosy.

Sarcoidosis and tuberculoid leprosy (TL) are prototypes of granulomatous inflammation in dermatology, which embody one of the histopathology limitations in distinguishing some diseases. Recent advances in the use of nonlinear optical microscopy in skin have enabled techniques, such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), to become powerful tools to study the physical and biochemical properties of skin. We use SHG images to analyze the collagen network, to distinguish differences between sarcoidosis and TL granulomas. SHG images obtained from skin biopsies of 33 patients with TL and 24 with sarcoi

Diffusion kurtosis imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging in assessment of liver fibrosis stage and necroinflammatory activity.

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the diagnostic value of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in assessing and quantifying hepatic fibrosis. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into the control group (n = 6) and the fibrosis experimental groups (n = 6 per group) with CCl4 administration for 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Liver fibrosis stage (S) and necroinflammatory activity grade (G) were histopathologically determined. DKI and DWI were performed; mean apparent diffusion (MD), mean kurtosis (MK), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated. DKI

Lipofibromatous hamartoma of the median nerve: 3T MRI evaluation by constrained spherical deconvolution analysis.

In this study we described a case of lipofibromatous hamartoma involving the median nerve. We adopted diffusion tensor imaging and constrained spherical deconvolution-based tractography to reconstruct the affected median nerve. Moreover, we extracted diffusion-based parameters reflecting axonal integrity loss of median nerve fibres. Our data showed that constrained spherical deconvolution-based tractography outperformed the diffusion tensor imaging-based method, allowing the detection of the entire median nerve, including its branches, thus offering a robust method to investigate the involveme

Novel Insights into Complex Cardiovascular Pathologies using 4D Flow Analysis by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Blood flow assessment is essential to fully understand cardiovascular function in disease pathologies and for identification of individuals at long-term risk of cardiovascular disease development. Qualitative and quantitative assessments of blood flow by imaging modalities have been limited, and much of the accurate quantification has relied on invasive measures. METHODS: This review discusses how four-dimensional velocity cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR) offers increasing potential for the non-invasive assessment of blood flow in the heart and major blood vessels s

Differentiating T2 hyperintensity in neonatal white matter by two-compartment model of diffusional kurtosis imaging.

In conventional neonatal MRI, the T2 hyperintensity (T2h) in cerebral white matter (WM) at term-equivalent age due to immaturity or impairment is still difficult to identify. To clarify such issue, this study used the metrics derived from a two-compartment WM model of diffusional kurtosis imaging (WM-DKI), including intra-axonal, extra-axonal axial and radial diffusivities (Da, De,// and De,⊥), to compare WM differences between the simple T2h and normal control for both preterm and full-term neonates, and between simple T2h and complex T2h with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Results in

Metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy of cardiac sympathetic innervation.

Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG), a noradrenaline analogue, labelled with radioactive iodine I-123 is used for assessing pre-synaptic activity of the myocardial adrenergic system. The paper describes the mechanism of myocardial I-123-MIBG uptake and the relevant examination methods. It also refers to the necessity of standardising acquisition methods and assessment criteria in order to improve comparability of results, especially numerical results, originating from various countries and centres.Although first introduced as a cardiological diagnostic procedure 30 years ago, I-123-MIBG myocardial s

Developmental change in regional brain structure over 7 months in early adolescence: comparison of approaches for longitudinal atlas-based parcellation.

Early adolescence is a time of rapid change in neuroanatomy and sexual development. Precision in tracking changes in brain morphology with structural MRI requires image segmentation with minimal error. Here, we compared two approaches to achieve segmentation by image registration with an atlas to quantify regional brain structural development over a 7-month interval in normal, early adolescent boys and girls. Adolescents were scanned twice (average interval=7.3 months), yielding adequate data for analysis in 16 boys (baseline age 10.9 to 13.9 years; Tanner Stage=1 to 4) and 12 girls (baseline

Dose and perceived image quality in chest radiography.

Chest radiography is the most commonly performed diagnostic X-ray examination. The radiation dose to the patient for this examination is relatively low but because of its frequent use, the contribution to the collective dose is considerable. Consequently, optimization of dose and image quality offers a challenging area of research. In this article studies on dose reduction, different detector technologies, optimization of image acquisition and new technical developments in image acquisition and post processing will be reviewed. Studies indicate that dose reduction in PA chest images to at leas

Effective brain connectivity in children with reading difficulties during phonological processing.

Using Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined effective connectivity between three left hemisphere brain regions (inferior frontal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, fusiform gyrus) and bilateral medial frontal gyrus in 12 children with reading difficulties (M age=12.4, range: 8.11-14.10) and 12 control children (M age=12.3, range: 8.9-14.11) during rhyming judgments to visually presented words. More difficult conflicting trials either had similar orthography but different phonology (e.g. pint-mint) or similar phonology but different orthograph

Detection of masses in mammograms via statistically based enhancement, multilevel-thresholding segmentation, and region selection.

A method for automatic detection of mammographic masses is presented. As part of this method, an enhancement algorithm that improves image contrast based on local statistical measures of the mammograms is proposed. After enhancement, regions are segmented via thresholding at multiple levels, and a set of features is computed from each of the segmented regions. A region-ranking system is also presented that identifies the regions most likely to represent abnormalities based on the features computed. The method was tested on 57 mammographic images of masses from the Mini-MIAS database, and achie

[Measuring the refractive power of customized soft contact lenses].

PURPOSE: Soft contact lenses with spherical base curves have been used for many years. The computation of the refractive powers of these lenses is easy, requiring only that one uses the lens maker equation for thick lenses. Nevertheless, for customized contact lenses, there is yet no reliable method for measuring the higher order optical aberrations. In this study we have developed in the Center for Visual Sciences of the University of Rochester an optical apparatus that allows for precise measurement of low and high order aberrations of customized soft contact lenses. METHODS: An optical app

Imaging features of central nervous system fungal infections.

Fungal infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare in the general population and are invariably secondary to primary focus elsewhere, usually in the lung or intestine. Except for people with longstanding diabetes, they are most frequently encountered in immunocompromised patients such as those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or after organ transplantation. Due to the lack of inflammatory response, neuroradiological findings are often nonspecific and are frequently mistaken for tuberculous meningitis, pyogenic abscess or brain tumor. Intracranial fungal infections are being

Reproducibility and discriminative power of MRI liver radiomics: Impact of deep learning-based image reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: While Deep Learning-based Image Reconstruction (DLIR) is increasingly used to improve MRI quality, its influence on radiomic stability remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess the impact of DLIR on the reproducibility and discriminative power of radiomic features in liver MRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 95 patients with malignant liver lesions underwent 1.5 T MRI (T2, T2FS, and Diffusion). Images were reconstructed using both traditional (non-DLIR) and DLIR (AIR Recon DL) methods. Three regions of interest (ROI) - tumor, peritumoral, and healthy li

Optimized acquisition for simultaneous intravoxel incoherent motion and R2 quantification in the liver.

PURPOSE: Design a b-value, first-order motion moment (M1), and echo time (TE)-optimized data acquisition for simultaneous intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and R2 quantification in the liver. METHODS: The b-M1-optimized (i.e., single TE) and b-M1-TE-optimized (i.e., multi-TE) IVIM acquisitions were determined using Cramer-Rao lower-bound optimization. Eleven healthy volunteers underwent MRI of the liver where each optimized acquisition was acquired twice (test-retest). For each data set, IVIM estimates (diffusion coefficient [D], perfusion signal fractions [f1 and f2], blood velocity standa
