Prognostic importance of apathy in syndromes associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of apathy, impulsivity, and behavioral change on survival in patients with frontotemporal dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, and corticobasal syndrome. METHODS: We assessed 124 patients from the epidemiologic PiPPIN (Pick's Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Prevalence and Incidence) study. Patients underwent detailed baseline cognitive and behavioral assessment focusing on apathy, impulsivity, and behavioral change. Logistic regression identified predictors of death within 2.5 years from assessment, including age, sex, diagnosis, cognitio

Mania symptoms and HIV-risk behavior among adolescents in mental health treatment.

This study explored whether adolescents with elevated symptoms of mania (ESM+) engage in more HIV risk behaviors than those with other psychiatric disorders and examined factors associated with HIV risk behavior among ESM+ adolescents. Eight hundred forty adolescents (56% female, 58% African American, M age = 14.9 years) who received mental health treatment completed private, computer-based assessments of psychiatric disorders and of sexual and substance use behaviors and provided urine to screen for sexually transmitted infections (STI). Eighty-seven percent met criteria for a psychiatric dis

From scrolling to spending: Psychological mechanisms of AI-driven impulse buying in live-stream shopping.

This study explores the relationship between perceived intrusiveness of AI recommendation and live-stream impulse buying in AI-enabled live-stream shopping. Based on Stimulus-Organism-Response theory and recent studies on AI recommendation source effects, the model considers perceived AI recommendation intrusiveness as algorithmic stimulus, perceived attentional capture as the internal organismic mechanism and live-stream impulse buying as a behavioral response. AI skepticism and trait self-control are further proposed as boundary conditions of the model. A survey was conducted with 417 active

Potential association between suicide risk, aggression, impulsivity, and the somatosensory system.

Aggression and impulsivity are linked to suicidal behaviors, but their relationship to the suicidal crisis remains unclear. This magnetoencephalography (MEG) study investigated the link between aggression, impulsivity, and resting-state MEG power and connectivity. Four risk groups were enrolled: high-risk (HR; n = 14), who had a recent suicidal crisis; lower-risk (LR; n = 41), who had a history of suicide attempts but no suicide attempt or ideation in the past year; clinical control (CC; n = 38), who had anxiety/mood disorders but no suicidal history; and minimal risk (MR; n = 28), who had no

Substance Use and Gambling Patterns Among Adolescents: Differences According to Gender and Impulsivity.

Although alcohol, tobacco and cannabis are the most prevalent drugs used by adolescents, gambling is a growing concern due to its increasing popularity. To date there have been few studies exploring the existing patterns of concurrent use of drugs and gambling in adolescents. This study aims to identify subpopulations of adolescents using different substances and gambling activities, to explore gender differences and to examine impulsivity as a predictor of class membership. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 22 high-schools, and 1644 adolescents were assessed (54.1% males; mean age =

Inhibition of hyperactivity and impulsivity by carbonic anhydrase inhibitors in spontaneously hypertensive rats, an animal model of ADHD.

RATIONALE: Dysregulation of noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems is involved in the pathology of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Carbonic anhydrase (CA) has been reported to affect monoamine transmission in the central nervous system. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of CA inhibitors on the hyperactivity and impulsivity of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), which is currently the best-validated animal model of ADHD. METHODS: SHRs and Wistar Kyoto rats at 6 to 8 weeks of age were pretreated with intraperitoneal injections of acetazolamid

Cognitive and Mental Health Profiles of Binge-Eating Adults with and Without Comorbid Addictive Behaviors.

Background: Binge eating is a disordered eating behavior implicated in eating disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa; it significantly affects an individual's physical and mental health. Recent studies suggest shared neurobiological mechanisms between binge eating and addictive behaviors. Comorbid addiction (e.g., substance use disorders and behavioral addictions) is also frequently reported in binge-eating patients. However, it is still unclear whether binge-eating individuals with comorbid addictions differ in their cognitive and mental health characteristics from

A Genetically Informed Study of Digital screen time, Video game play, and Impulsivity in Established Adulthood.

High levels of digital screen time are associated with heightened impulsivity, though the assumption that this relationship is causal has seldom been rigorously examined. Moreover, the nature of this association may vary across life stages. Adults in established adulthood (ages 30-45) often face increased career and family commitments, which may impact leisure activities and the relationship between screen time and impulsivity. This study examined the association between digital screen time, video game play, and facets of impulsivity (i.e., perseverance, premeditation, and urgency) in adults i

Addicted to compulsion: assessing three core dimensions of addiction across obsessive-compulsive disorder and gambling disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients display increased impulsivity, impaired decision-making, and reward system dysfunction. In a Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) perspective, these findings are prototypical for addiction and have led some authors to view OCD as a behavioral addiction. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate similarities and differences on impulsivity, decision-making, and reward system, as core dimensions of addiction, across OCD and gambling disorder (GD) patients. METHODS: Forty-four OCD patients, 26 GD patients, and

Functional inhibitory control dynamics in impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders related to alterations in the mesocorticolimbic dopamine network occur in Parkinson's disease (PD). Our objective was to investigate the functional neural substrates of reward processing and inhibitory control in these patients. METHODS: Eighteen PD patients with impulse control disorders, 17 without this complication, and 18 healthy controls performed a version of the Iowa Gambling Task during functional magnetic resonance scanning under 3 conditions: positive, negative, and mixed feedback. Whole-brain contrasts, regions of interest, time courses, functi

Blunted hormone responses to Ipsapirone are associated with trait impulsivity in personality disorder patients.

Impulsive aggression is associated with central serotonergic dysfunction. Animal models particularly implicate the 5-HT(1A) receptor in this behavior. We tested the hypothesis that central 5-HT(1A) receptor function is impaired in impulsive aggressive personality disorder patients. A total of 52 individuals with DSM-III-R personality disorders, all medically healthy adult outpatients without concurrent psychiatric medication treatment, underwent serial plasma cortisol, prolactin, and temperature measurements before and after ipsapirone 20 mg oral administration. Subjects completed self-report

Clinical predictors of at-risk mental states in general adolescent population: a 2-year follow-up study.

Adolescence is a critical period of neurodevelopment during which psychopathological trajectories associated with the risk of psychosis may emerge. The construct of the At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) enables the identification of subclinical presentations preceding psychosis; however, its course and predictors in the general adolescent population remain poorly understood. Most available studies have focused on clinical samples or cross-sectional designs, limiting our understanding of the longitudinal and transdiagnostic nature of psychosis risk in the general adolescent population, where psychoti

Gambling and the Reasoned Action Model: Predicting Past Behavior, Intentions, and Future Behavior.

Gambling is a serious concern for society because it is highly addictive and is associated with a myriad of negative outcomes. The current study applied the Reasoned Action Model (RAM) to understand and predict gambling intentions and behavior. Although prior studies have taken a reasoned action approach to understand gambling, no prior study has fully applied the RAM or used the RAM to predict future gambling. Across two studies the RAM was used to predict intentions to gamble, past gambling behavior, and future gambling behavior. In study 1 the model significantly predicted intentions and pa

Are obsessive-compulsive symptoms impulsive, compulsive or both?

BACKGROUND: The relationships between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and distinct forms of impulsivity and compulsivity are unclear. Such examination would be relevant in terms of how best to classify psychiatric disorders and in understanding candidate 'traits' that extend across a continuum between normalcy and clinical disorders. METHOD: 515 young adults (aged 18-29years) completed the Padua Inventory and undertook detailed clinical and neurocognitive assessments. Relationships between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and distinct types of impulsivity and compulsivity were evaluated using line
