Family planning services for incarcerated women: models for filling an unmet need.

Purpose Incarcerated women around the globe are predominantly of reproductive age. Most of these women have been pregnant before, and many want to be sexually active and avoid pregnancy upon release. Yet few of these women are on a regular method of contraception. Providing contraceptive services for women in custody benefits individual and public health goals of reducing unintended pregnancy. This policy briefing reviews evidence for an unmet need for family planning in the correctional setting, and policy implications for expanding services. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/met

Sudden Death Associated With Incarcerated Small Bowel Due to Mesodiverticular Band.

Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly present in about 3% of the population and usually asymptomatic. Rarely, a mesodiverticular band extends from the tip of a Meckel's diverticulum to the mesentery, thought to be due to lack of involution of the left vitelline artery. The presence of this band creates a closed loop through which loops of bowel can become entrapped. Rare case reports have described incarceration of bowel and sudden death in children. We present such a case and discuss this entity.

A Qualitative Examination of Stigma Among Formerly Incarcerated Adults Living With HIV.

The over-representation of people with stigmatized characteristics in the U.S. criminal justice population, including adults living with HIV … l interactions, employment, and engaging in HIV care. Communities with a high prevalence of HIV and incarceration, and health care providers within those communities should be targeted for stigma reduction efforts. Practitioners should work to empower individuals living with HIV, especially in the face of multiple potential stigmas.

Incarcerated Women's Experiences and Beliefs About Psychotropic Medication: An Empirical Study.

OBJECTIVE: Research has consistently shown that incarcerated women experience mental illness at disproportionate rates and heavily use psych … riencing stigma related to medication use (p<.01). CONCLUSIONS: Psychotropic medication use during incarceration is a complex phenomenon that is related not only to perceived therapeutic effects of medication but also to issues of impact, personal agency, locus of control, stigma, and perceived biological vulnerability.

Suicidal ideation and attempts among court-involved, non-incarcerated youth.

Over the past decade, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among adolescents and a public health priority. Court-involved non-incarcerated juvenile justice youth frequently present with risk factors for suicide. Among these court-involved youth, 14% (n=50) endorsed a lifetime history of suicide ideation and attempts. Three main factors were associated with increased risk: prior offense, substance use, and childhood sexual abuse histories. This study highlights the importance of understanding suicidal behavior among non-detained juvenile justice populations. Community-based court

Factors Associated with Pregnancy among Incarcerated African American Adolescent Girls.

The purpose of this study was to examine the social and behavioral factors associated with pregnancy history among a sample of African American adolescent girls recruited from a short-term juvenile detention center in order to better understand the needs of this vulnerable population. Data were collected from a sample of 188 detained African American, 13-17-year-old girls in Atlanta, Georgia, who participated in a larger HIV prevention study. An audio computer-assisted self-interviewing survey was completed by participants to obtain information on socioecological factors to include individual,

HIV testing among non-incarcerated substance-abusing juvenile offenders.

Juvenile offenders are a subgroup of adolescents at particular risk for HIV/STI infection. Although HIV prevalence among these youth is low (<1%) in the US, rates of other STIs, unprotected sexual activity, multiple partners, and incidents of substance use during sex are high compared with other adolescent populations. Many of these youth will enter the adult criminal justice system, which is known to have an extremely high rate of HIV infection. US constitutional mandates provide HIV/STI testing for incarcerated juveniles, but close to 80% of juvenile arrestees are never detained. Moreover, a

Factor for felons: how can we provide haemophilia care to the incarcerated?

OBJECTIVES: In 2011, 6.98-million offenders were documented in the adult correctional system, with state operating costs designated 12% towards medical care ($11.97 day per inmate) for the general population. Common co-existing health problems identified are: arthritis (13%), hypertension (11%), asthma (10%) and heart problems (6%). Less than 5% of inmates have health issues related to cancer, diabetes, liver or renal problems and communicable diseases. The leading cause of death is suicide (33.2%), followed by heart disease (26.1%). Despite these statistics quality is lacking. Given these sta

An exploratory study of therapeutic misconception among incarcerated clinical trial participants.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic misconception, the misunderstanding of differences between research and clinical care, is widely prevalent among non-incarcerated trial participants. Yet little attention has been paid to its presence among individuals who participate in research while incarcerated. METHODS: This study examined the extent to which seventy-two incarcerated individuals may experience therapeutic misconception about their participation in one of six clinical trials, and its correlation with participant characteristics and potential influences on research participation. RESULTS: On averag

PREDICTORS OF SUICIDE RISK IN INCARCERATED MALE OFFENDERS: THE ROLE OF PERSONALITY DISORDERS.

AIM: This paper summarizes the results of a cross-sectional study aimed at exploring the role of personality disorders in predicting the sui … tiple linear regression. The frequency of suicide attempts during the periods of freedom and during incarceration were significant predictors of suicide risk. Moreover, the diagnosis of personality disorder brought a significant addition to the power of final regression model, explaining almost 8% of the variance in suicide risk among the inmates. CONCLUSIONS: …

Strain, Negative Emotions, and Level of Criminality Among Chinese Incarcerated Women.

General strain theory (GST) has been one of the most frequently tested criminological theories. According to GST, strain tends to generate negative emotions, which create pressures for corrective action, such as crime and delinquency. Although GST has received strong empirical support, one under-addressed issue is the lack of diversity in sampling population in assessing the generalizability of the theory. Using survey data collected from 335 incarcerated women in four Chinese prisons, this study examined the impact of strain and negative emotions on the level of female criminality. The strain

Incarcerated Morgagni hernia in an octogenarian with incidental right-sided colonic malignancy.

We present an incarcerated Morgagni hernia in an octogenarian with incidental right-sided colonic malignancy who was admitted to clinic due to abdominal pain and symptoms of intestinal obstruction. An 85-old male patient had a history of constipation, abdominal distension, pain, vomiting, nausea and radiographic features of bowel obstruction and mediastinal mass in right lower chest. Under suspicion of acute intestinal obstruction due to transverse colon herniation in thorax through Morgagni foramen, emergent laparotomy was performed. Morgagni foramen was located on the right-sided anterior di

Psychiatric problems and suicidal behaviour in incarcerated adolescents in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Data are lacking about the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviour in incarcerated adolescents in Asia. This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the prediction of suicidal attempts in 100 incarcerated males aged 12-19 years in Shiraz. Data were collected in face-to-face interview using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (Farsi version). The mean age was 16.8 (SD 1.3) years and mean age at first imprisonment was 16.0 (SD 1.5) years. Nearly 70% of the adolescents had at least one current psychiatric disorder, t

Prevalence and predictors of sexually transmitted infections in hazardously-drinking incarcerated women.

Incarcerated women are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections. Left untreated, these infections can have severe adverse health effects. In this study the authors present prevalence rates of trichomonas, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and factors related to having a sexually transmitted infection in a sample of 245 hazardously-drinking incarcerated women who reported heterosexual intercourse in the previous 3 months. Vaginal swabs were collected following the self-report baseline assessment. Participants averaged 34.0 (±8.8) years of age; 174 (71.3%) were non-Hispanic Caucasian, 47 (19.3%)

Organised diverticular abscess mimicking incarcerated parastomal hernia in an immunocompromised patient.

A 68-year-old immunosuppressed woman was admitted with poor-functioning colostomy, which she had following a Hartmann's procedure for diverticular disease in sigmoid colon 8 years previously. She was on cyclosporin and warfarin for transplanted kidney and atrial fibrillation, respectively. On admission, an erythematous and tender swelling was found around the stoma, which was diagnosed as an irreducible, parastomal hernia clinically. The swelling was investigated further with CT, which revealed an organised mesocolic abscess of diverticular origin. The abscess was drained percutaneously under
