Excess molybdenum impairs growth, nitrogen metabolism and nutrient translocation of soybean in Bradyrhizobium symbiosis, with parallels to tungsten stress.

Molybdenum (Mo) serves an important biological role as part of cofactors of various enzymes in all domains of life. In plants, it is critical for nitrogen metabolism and integral to rhizobial enzymes such as nitrogenase, which is essential for plant-rhizobia symbiosis. However, like other transition metals, Mo can be toxic at excess concentrations. Its chemical analog tungsten (W) has no biological function in eukaryotes and is known to be toxic, primarily by inhibiting molybdoenzymes. Previously, we found that soybean (Glycine max) in symbiosis with N2-fixing rhizobia (Bradyrhizobium japonicu

Sex-related osmotic adjustment strategies underpin desiccation tolerance in the intertidal seaweed Neoporphyra haitanensis.

Desiccation stress constitutes a significant environmental challenge for macroalgae inhabiting the intertidal zone, in which recurrent tidal cycles shape their physiological tolerance. However, sex-related responses to desiccation in macroalgae remain largely unexplored. In this study, we integrated physiological measurements with transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate sex-related responses of Neoporphyra haitanensis to desiccation stress. Physiological results revealed that males possessed a stronger osmotic adjustment capacity than females under desiccation. Consistently, non

Integrated network toxicology, bioinformatics, and molecular docking reveal the potential molecular mechanisms linking bisphenol A to glioma progression.

Glioma is a highly aggressive central nervous system malignancy with poor clinical outcomes, and increasing attention has focused on whether environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals contribute to its progression. This study aimed to systematically investigate the molecular mechanisms linking bisphenol A (BPA) to glioma using an integrated network toxicology and bioinformatics strategy. BPA-related targets were collected from public databases and intersected with glioma-associated genes to identify shared targets. A protein-protein interaction network was then constructed to screen hub gene

Cardiovascular peripheral effector mechanism in postflight orthostatic intolerance: a simulation study.

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) following exposure to microgravity or head-down bed rest is frequently observed and is thought to be multifactorial origin. Although hypovolemia is considered as the primary cause of OI, the role played by other factors, such as the lowered vasoconstrictor responsiveness (VCR) of resistance vessels, the enhanced vasoconstriction response of cerebral vessels, and the depressed myocardial contractility need to be elucidated. It is difficult to assess experimentally how each of these changes would affect orthostatic tolerance and how these factors interact with each o

Rhizobacteria-Mediated Reprogramming of Phytohormone Landscapes for Mitigating Salinity Stress in Plants.

Salinity stress is one of the major stressors that limits yield potential in field crops. Salinity-led imbalances in ionic and water potential, as well as oxidative damage, impair photosynthesis. Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have been demonstrated to mitigate salinity-stress-induced damage through various mechanisms such as biofilm and exopolysaccharide production, modulation of plant root architecture or molecular signaling involving modulation of sodium/potassium efflux transporters. PGPRs are known to induce biosynthesis and signaling of various phytohormones in plants. PGPR

Nicotine modulates α7nAChR associated ceramide-mitochondrial stress responses in Parkinsonian models.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive dopaminergic degeneration accompanied by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, yet the metabolic mechanisms underlying these pathological changes remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether nicotine preserves dopaminergic integrity by modulating ceramide homeostasis through α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) signalling. In an MPTP mouse model, nicotine improved motor and exploratory deficits, preserved striatal tyrosine hydroxyl positive fibres, and selectively reversed ceramide accumulation in the

Non-homeostatic body weight regulation through a brainstem-restricted receptor for GDF15.

Under homeostatic conditions, animals use well-defined hypothalamic neural circuits to help maintain stable body weight, by integrating metabolic and hormonal signals from the periphery to balance food consumption and energy expenditure. In stressed or disease conditions, however, animals use alternative neuronal pathways to adapt to the metabolic challenges of altered energy demand. Recent studies have identified brain areas outside the hypothalamus that are activated under these 'non-homeostatic' conditions, but the molecular nature of the peripheral signals and brain-localized receptors tha

Genome-wide identification of the Hordeum vulgare (L.) CASPL gene family and its diverse roles in response to drought and salt stress.

BACKGROUND: Casparian strip membrane domain proteins like (CASPL), exhibit profound associations with root development, stress responsiveness and mineral element uptake in plants. However, systematic characterization of the CASPL family in H. vulgare (Hordeum vulgare) and its involvement in drought and salt stresses remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, a genome-wide identification and systematic analysis of the HvCASPL gene family was performed. Gene structure, conserved motifs, phylogenetic classification, duplication events, selective pressure, and cis-acting regulatory elements were co

Skiers' footprint on wildlife stress: Tracing the impact of winter sports on black grouse with interactive mapping.

Human recreation in mountainous ecosystems, particularly skiing, poses a significant challenge for wildlife conservation, as evidenced by physiological stress responses observed in black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix). Here, we present a reusable workflow that integrates noninvasive fecal corticosterone metabolite (FCM) measurements, mixed-effects modeling, spatial prediction, and an interactive web application to quantify and map stress responses to winter sports. We analyzed 235 fecal samples for corticosterone metabolites as indicators of stress. Using a mixed-effects model, we observed that FCM l

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce ocular surface toxicity via endoplasmic reticulum stress.

The increasing environmental burden of micro/nanoplastics (M/NPs) has heightened concerns about their potential threat to ocular health, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying M/NPs-induced ocular surface injury remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the ocular toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) with a focus on the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. A mouse ocular exposure model and a human corneal epithelial (HCE-T) cell model were established. Multi-level analyses demonstrated that PS-NPs exposure induced ocular surface toxicity in mice, characteriz

Genome-wide analysis of the PRT gene family in rice reveals that OsPRT7 plays a significant role in heat stress response.

PRTase plays vital roles in plant development and abiotic stress responses by maintaining the balance between plant growth and stress adaptation. The evolutionary conservation of the OsPRT gene family was elucidated by integrating phylogenetic tree construction, synteny assessments, and Ka/Ks ratio calculations. To identify prospective thermotolerant candidates, a comprehensive screening strategy was employed; this encompassed tissue-specific expression profiling, expression profiling under heat stress conditions, haplotype association analysis across 620 rice accessions, amino acid variant exa

Autonomic cardiovascular mechanisms linked to stress in dental practice.

Background Abundant evidence from human and animal studies indicates that the sympathetic response during mental stress preferentially involves the heart. Acute or chronic stress can lead to cardiovascular disease, including hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias. Stressors in dental practice are numerous, including drill noise, sight of a needle and pain. Numerous studies indicate that many adults suffer from dental fear or dental anxiety, and many develop dental phobia. Fear, anxiety or phobia are associated with increases in heart rate, changes in systolic blood pressure, and decreased oxygen

Dual-omics reveals temporal differences in acute sympathetic stress-induced cardiac inflammation following α1 and β-adrenergic receptors activation.

Sympathetic stress is prevalent in cardiovascular diseases. Sympathetic overactivation under strong acute stresses triggers acute cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction (MI), sudden cardiac death, and stress cardiomyopathy. α1-ARs and β-ARs, two dominant subtypes of adrenergic receptors in the heart, play a significant role in the physiological and pathologic regulation of these processes. However, little is known about the functional similarities and differences between α1- and β-ARs activated temporal responses in stress-induced cardiac pathology. In this work, we systematical

Epigenetic Risk Factors in PTSD and Depression.

Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that children exposed to adverse experiences are at increased risk for the development of depression, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A history of child abuse and maltreatment increases the likelihood of being subsequently exposed to traumatic events or of developing PTSD as an adult. The brain is highly plastic during early life and encodes acquired information into lasting memories that normally subserve adaptation. Translational studies in rodents showed that enduring sensitization of neuronal and neuroendocrine ci

Dietary Supplementation with GBE and TP Alleviates Heat Stress-Induced Lung Oxidative Damage in Broilers.

Heat stress is a major environmental stressor in poultry production that reduces growth performance and induces oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and lung tissue injury. This study investigated the protective effects of dietary supplementation with Ginkgo biloba extract and tea polyphenols against heat stress-induced lung injury in broilers. A total of 320 one-day-old broilers were reared under standard management conditions until 21 days of age. Subsequently, 300 birds with similar body weight were selected and randomly allocated into six groups: a thermoneutral control group, a heat

An insight into the mechanism of DNA damage response in plants- role of SUPPRESSOR OF GAMMA RESPONSE 1: An overview.

Because of their sessile lifestyle, plants are inescapably exposed to various kinds of environmental stresses throughout their lifetime. Therefore, to regulate their growth and development, plants constantly monitor the environmental signals and respond appropriately. However, these environmental stress factors, along with some endogenous metabolites, generated in response to environmental stress factors often induce various forms of DNA damage in plants and thus promote genome instability. To maintain the genomic integrity, plants have developed an extensive, sophisticated and coordinated cel

Piriform cortex gates learned fear through a brain-spleen neuroimmune axis.

Maladaptive learned fear responses to stress underlie several debilitating neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we identify a brain-to-spleen neural pathway that mediates learned fear through coordinated neuroimmune interactions. Using a chronic acquired olfactory stress (CAOS) model, we demonstrate that sustained enhancement of the piriform cortex (Pir) excitability contributes to the transformation of stress-associated olfactory inputs into learned fear-avoidance behavior. Through comprehensive neural tracing approaches, we mapped a functional tetrasynaptic circuit (Pir→ventral hippocampus CA1

ER stress induced by ER calcium depletion and UVB irradiation regulates tight junction barrier integrity in human keratinocytes.

BACKGROUND: Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium depletion-induced ER stress is a crucial signal for keratinocyte differentiation and barrier homeostasis, but its effects on the epidermal tight junction (TJ) have not been characterized. Ultraviolet B (UVB) causes ER calcium release in keratinocytes and disrupts epidermal TJ, however, the involvement of ER stress in the UVB-induced TJ alterations remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of ER stress by pharmacological ER calcium depletion or UVB on the TJ integrity in normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK). METHODS: NHEK were

AKAP12 Regulates Perivascular OPC Accumulation in the Corpus Callosum During Cerebral Hypoperfusion.

Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) have been reported to interact with cerebral microvessels, but the extent and spatiotemporal regulation of this relationship across maturation and hypoperfusion-induced stress remain incompletely defined. Here, we quantified OPC-vessel relationships in the mouse corpus callosum using PDGFR-α/OLIG2/CD31 immunohistochemistry and distance-based spatial analysis, classifying OPCs within 10 μm of CD31+ vessels as perivascular OPCs. We show that while total OPC density decreases from development to adulthood, the proportion of perivascular OPCs increases in the
