A 42-year-old woman visited our hospital with palpitations, excessive sweating, and finger tremors in March 2011. She was diagnosed with Graves' disease based on the following test results: thyroid stimulating hormone < 0.01 μU/ml, free thyroxine 6.15 ng/ml, and thyrotropin receptor antibody 7.8 U/ml. Treatment with methimazole 30 mg and propranolol 30 mg was started, and her thyroid function showed improvement. However, significant manic symptoms, irritability, hallucinations, and delusions were noted, and she was hospitalized for her own protection in May 2011. Although treatment with aripip

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a syndrome observed in patients with liver dysfunction such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, and is characterized by cognitive impairment, personality changes, and a depressed level of consciousness. The detailed mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of HE remains unclear. In the present study, our aim was to establish an animal model for HE with cirrhosis. Therefore, we carried out behavioral and biochemical analysis of cirrhotic rats after treatment with thioacetamide (TAA) for 20 weeks. The rats subjected to chronic TAA treatment (TAA rats) showed reduction of cogn

While most cigarette smokers endorse a desire to quit smoking, only 14-49% will achieve abstinence after 6 months or more of treatment. A greater understanding of the effects of smoking on brain function may result in improved pharmacological and behavioral interventions for this condition. Research groups have examined the effects of acute and chronic nicotine/cigarette exposure on brain activity using functional imaging; the purpose of this chapter is to synthesize findings from such studies and present a coherent model of brain function in smokers. Responses to acute administration of nicot

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of aluminum (Al) on the nervous system functions in workers chronically exposed to Al.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study covered a selected group of 67 male workers (mean age, 38.7 SD 10.3 years; range 23-55 years) involved in the Al production. Their employment duration ranged between 2 and 34 years (mean, 14.6 SD 8.9 years). Aluminum oxide (Al203) concentrations varied from 0.13 to 1.95 mg/m3 (arithmetic mean, 0.40 mg/3, geometric mean, 0.35 mg/m3 SD 0.29). Urine Al concentrations found in smelters ranged from 8.5 to 93.0 mic

Cigarette smokers frequently fail multiple attempts to quit smoking, often because of the unpleasant symptoms that accompany quitting. Similar unpleasant symptoms accompany inflammatory responses during infection and autoimmune disease. The hypothesis that smoking abstinence induces inflammation was tested. Eighteen smokers (n = 18) were evaluated while smoking freely and after 24 h of nicotine abstinence. Immune, cardiovascular and psychological measures were collected. Hunger, nervousness, anxiety, restlessness and irritability increased during abstinence (p < 0.05); systolic blood pressure

Patterns of menstrual cycle-related change were compared in three groups of women differing in their use of oral contraceptives and being matched for age, occupation, and parity. These groups were: a "monophasic group" (n = 35) established on low dose "combined" pills with stable levels of estrogen and progestagen. a "triphasic group" (n = 30) on low dose pills with escalating progestagen dosage, and a "non-pill control group" (n = 57) using nonsteroidal contraceptives. Each woman kept visual analogue ratings of mood, irritability, energy, tension, breast tenderness, bloating, and sexual inter

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traumatic events, ongoing adversity, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with altered activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but findings are mixed. This may be explained in part by heterogeneity in PTSD symptom profiles.
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the complex relationships between the number of traumatic events and post-displacement stressors, individual symptoms of PTSD, and HPA-axis hormones cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in refugees.
METHODS: Adult (18+ years) Syrian refugees with increased lev

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system that typically strikes young adults. It is often associated with a wide range of functional deficits and progressive disability. Common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include vision problems, spasticity, weakness, ataxia, bladder and bowel dysfunctions, fatigue, pain syndromes, tremors, vertigo, cognitive impairment, and mood disorders. Multiple sclerosis has a major negative impact on patient health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Quality of life (QoL) is a multidimensional construct composed of functional

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with other disorders (comorbidity), reduced quality of life and increased use of health resources. We aimed to explore the impact of comorbidity on cost of health care in patients with IBS in general practice.
METHODS: In this cohort study 208 consecutive patients with IBS (Rome II) were recruited. Sociodemographic data, IBS symptoms, and comorbidity (somatic symptoms, organic diseases and psychiatric disorders) were assessed at baseline. Based on a follow up interview after 6-9 months and use of medical records, IBS and non-IBS related

Exploratory factor analysis (varimax and promax rotations) of the aberrant behavior checklist-community version (ABC) in 275 individuals with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) identified four- and five-factor solutions which accounted for >70% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis (Lisrel 8.7) revealed indices of moderate fit for the five-factor solution. Our results suggest that the factor structure of the ABC is robust within an ASD sample. Both solutions yielded a three items self-injury factor. Stratifying on this factor, we identified significant differences between the high- and low

"Acute" hypothalamic-pituitary function tests including insulin tolerance test, LRH, ACTH and TRH stimulation tests and nocturnal secretory pattern of human growth hormone, 11-OHCS, prolactin, FSH, LH and TSH were studied in a 23-year-old male with Kleine-Levin syndrome during the course of a typical hypersomnic attack. The "acute" tests revealed paradoxical growth-hormone response to TRH stimulation, borderline high basal plasma prolactin levels with normal response to TRH. The hormonal secretory pattern during sleep revealed abnormalities in LH, 11-OHCS and prolactin secretion. These togethe

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain often coexists with psychiatric disorders, yet less is known about the specific types of chronic pain conditions that may co-occur. This study aimed to classify chronic pain according to ICD-11 categories and provide an overview of the types and frequency of these conditions in a patient sample with psychiatric disorders and coexisting chronic pain.
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study consecutively recruited 151 patients (78.8 % females, mean age 36 years) from psychiatric outpatient units. Common psychiatric diagnoses included anxiety disorders (27.8 %),

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) may originate in childhood. There are currently limited data on persistence of DGBI into adulthood and risk factors for persistence. Furthermore, there are no data on this question from general practice, where the majority of DGBIs are diagnosed and managed. This study documents the proportion of childhood-diagnosed DGBIs that persisted into adulthood and what factors were associated with persistence.
METHODS: General practice records were obtained for more than 60,000 patients whose medical record spanned both childhood and adulthood y
