Nonpuerperal galactorrhea and hyperprolactinemia. Clinical findings, endocrine features and therapeutic responses in 56 cases.

The clinical and endocrine features, and the responses to different treatment modalities, were examined in 56 patients with galactorrhea and/or hyperprolactinemia after a two month to six year follow-up period. A pituitary adenoma was diagnosed in 17 patients. A prolactin-cell adenoma was identified histologically in eight patients. Other etiologic factors were myxedema (two patients), phenothiazine ingestion (six patients) and breast manipulation (four patients). In 27 patients, including three with abnormalities of the sella turcica, no causal factor was found, and their condition was labell

Incidence of galactorrhea in ovulatory and anovulatory females.

The incidence of galactorrhea in 480 ovulatory females was compared to that in 383 anovulatory females. One percent of the ovulatory and 3.2% of the anovulatory patients had bilateral galactorrhea. The probability (P) of these two groups being from the same population was less than 0.02.

Prevalence of cognitive dysfunction and associated behavioral changes, lactational failure, and their determinants among postpartum women in South India: A community-based study.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction and associated behavioral changes and their prevalence among postpartum women, and also the prevalence of lactational failure and its determinants among postpartum women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 200 postpartum women (65% rural, 35% urban). Data were collected through structured interviews and assessments using the Indian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests and regression models. RESULTS: Cognitiv

Hypernatremic dehydration due to lactation failure in an exclusively breastfed neonate.

We report a 13-day-old exclusively breastfed neonate, admitted with a history of fever, poor feeding, lethargy and decreased urine output. The mother had history of lactation failure. The neonate had severe hypernatremia, acute renal failure and metabolic acidosis. Renal ultrasound was normal, but the sodium level in mother's milk was 96 mEq/L (normal 7 ± 2 mEq/L). The neonate required peritoneal dialysis on the second day of admission. The biochemical investigations gradually returned to normal and the neonate was discharged on day 12 of admission. We highlight the importance of lactation man

Hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone suppression during the postpartum period: implications for the increase in psychiatric manifestations at this time.

The third trimester of human pregnancy is characterized by a hyperactive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, possibly driven by progressively increasing circulating levels of placental CRH and gradually decreasing levels of CRH-binding protein. The postpartum period, on the other hand, is characterized by an increased vulnerability to psychiatric manifestations (postpartum "blues," depression, and psychosis), a phenomenon compatible with suppressed hypothalamic CRH secretion. To investigate the hypothesis that the postpartum period is associated with suppression of hypothalamic CRH secretion,

Some factors causing mortality among female minks during the puerperium and lactation periods.

The purpose of this study, in which the farm was used as the statistical unit, was to find factors affecting mink mortality under farm conditions. Mortality was hypothesised to be affected by factors including, among others, variables describing the amount (level) and variation in composition and quality of the feed. Other explanatory variables applied in the study included farm size and age. Factor analyses were performed for variables of feed composition and quality in order to condense the variable information and to facilitate the selection of explanatory variables. This report presents a

Clinical study of mastitis-metritis-agalactia in sows in Illinois.

Mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) occurred in 6.9% of 16,405 farrowings recorded over 1 year (1981) in 31 Illinois swine herds. Prevalence of MMA among herds ranged from 1.1% to 37.2% and was not correlated to herd size. There was a significant positive correlation between the prevalence of MMA and the housing system wherein sows were moved from pasture gestation to crates immediately before farrowing. A significant seasonal peak of MMA was found for the third quarter of the year (10.3%). Mean prevalence of MMA was 13% in pluriparous sows and 4.2% in primiparous sows. The difference was not si

[Post-partum: Guidelines for clinical practice--Short text].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the post-partum management of women and their newborn whatever the mode of delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library and the recommendations from the French and foreign obstetrical societies or colleges have been consulted. RESULTS: Because breastfeeding is associated with a decrease in neonatal morbidity (lower frequency of cardiovascular diseases, infectious, atopic or infantile obesity) (EL2) and an improvement in the cognitive development of children (EL2), exclusive and extended breastfeeding is recommended (grade B) between 4 to 6

Role of astrocytes in thiamine deficiency.

Thiamine deficiency (TD) is the underlying cause of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), an acute neurological disorder characterized by structural damage to key periventricular structures in the brain. Increasing evidence suggests these focal histological lesions may be representative of a gliopathy in which astrocyte-related changes are a major feature of the disorder. These changes include a loss of the glutamate transporters GLT-1 and GLAST concomitant with elevated interstitial glutamate levels, lowered brain pH associated with increased lactate production, decreased levels of GFAP, reduction

Novel strategies for mitigating hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury: targeting MICU1 and calcium-glycolytic homeostasis with acteoside.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) contributes to metabolic disorders within hepatic sinusoid and frequently occurs during liver transplantation, yet its underlying mechanisms and intervention strategies remain obscure. This study aimed to elucidate whether acteoside (ACT) improved HIRI by repairing mitochondrial calcium uptake 1 (MICU1)-mediated Ca2+ dysregulation and facilitating glycolytic reprogramming. Using RNA sequencing, cleavage under targets & tagmentation (CUT&Tag) analysis, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs)-specific overexpression virus or siMicu1 lipid nanoparticl

Lactic acidosis in patients with diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Lactic acidosis is a relatively rare complication diagnosed in patients with diabetes. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify causes of lactic acidosis in patients with diabetes and to measure the extent of metabolic disturbances based on the available laboratory test results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 29 diabetic patients aged 20-87 years were admitted to the Intensive Diabetes Care Unit of the Warsaw Medical University in the years 2007-2012 with the diagnosis of lactic acidosis (lactate level >5 mmol/l). A detailed medical history was taken from all patient
