Trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in subjects with anxiety disorders.

Trauma histories were obtained from 711 subjects in a large study of anxiety disorders, with the intent of determining the prevalence and nature of psychological trauma in this group. Twenty-seven percent of subjects reported significant trauma; 35% of these (10% of all subjects) met DSM-II-R criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Subjects reporting sexual trauma were significantly more likely to have PTSD. The rate of PTSD was not higher in subjects with panic disorder than in those with other anxiety disorders.

Biobehavioral research on coronary heart disease: where is the person?

This study examined the thesis that patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) comprise discrete personality subtypes and that identification of these subtypes may benefit biobehavioral research on CHD. Measures of Negative Affectivity, Social Inhibition, and Self-Deception were used to generate a personality taxonomy through cluster analysis in a sample of 405 men with CHD. This empirical taxonomy served as a basis for the development of a conceptual model which delineates hardy, distressed, inhibited, and repressive subtypes. Coronary proneness may differ across these subtypes to the extent

The effects of physical activity and exercise training on psychological stress and well-being in an adolescent population.

To determine whether participating in physical activity affects psychological well-being in an adolescent population, 147 adolescents completed self-reports of exercise and psychological stress and well-being. Analysis revealed that those who reported greater physical activity also reported less stress and lower levels of depression. Adolescents who experienced a higher incidence of life events also demonstrated a strong association between stress and anxiety/depression/hostility. To investigate the effects of exercise training on psychological well-being, adolescents were assigned to either h

The comorbidity of multiple personality disorder and DSM-III-R axis II disorders.

Our ability to differentiate MPD from DSM-III-R Axis I disorders has become increasingly refined. Differentiation of MPD from the Axis II personality disorders is an area of more recent clinical investigation. MPD can be found comorbidity with many other psychiatric conditions. It is found in association with each of the DSM-III-R personality disorders. At the present time, however, we lack research data that define the prevalence of the comorbidity of MPD with the personality disorders. Objective study of this area is complicated by the paucity of instruments available to assess personality d

Validity of adjustment disorder, comparison with major depression.

Twenty inpatients suffering from an adjustment disorder with depressed mood according to the DSM-III criteria were compared with 22 inpatients with a (situationally provoked) major depression without an additional DSM-III/axis I diagnosis, with regard to expert- and self-rated symptomatology, social dysfunction and personality features. Furthermore, social support prior to admission was described. Subjects who had developed an adjustment disorder had less severe depressive symptomatology, associated social dysfunction and premorbid rigidity, and they remitted faster. Social support for both gr

Coping behaviors among depressed and nondepressed medical inpatients.

Sixty medical inpatients completed a variety of psychological measures related to factors associated with depression. An analysis of self-reported depression and coping response indices revealed significant differences in coping strategies between depressed and nondepressed medical inpatients. Depressed patients more often reported avoidance strategies to cope with the stressors associated with hospitalization, while nondepressed patients were more likely to utilize active coping techniques. Since the coping and depression measures were assessed concurrently, the direction of influence cannot

The stress-moderating effects of weeping and humor.

The moderating effects of emotional weeping and humor on the impact of negative life events were examined. Subjects who reported weeping frequently showed more mood disturbance at high levels of negative events and less to low levels of negative events than those who reported less frequent weeping. Humor-coping buffered stress in all groups except for males who reported frequent crying.

Pathways and cycles of runaways: a model for understanding repetitive runaway behavior.

Based on information provided by 149 runaways staying in a Canadian shelter, the authors developed a model that explains repititious running away as the result of youths' cognitive confusion and unrealistic beliefs. The majority of the youths, who had run away an average of 8.9 times, felt that the events that led them to run away were unpredictable, yet 54 percent blamed only themselves for what happened. The paper describes the pathways, cycles, and outcomes of running away; analyzes the relationship between the youths' experiences with prostitution, delinquency, and sexual and physical abus

Life events and biological vulnerability: a study of life events and platelet MAO activity in depressed patients.

The present study investigated the possible relationship between platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and life events. From the general hypothesis that the impact of life events should be seen against the background of an individual's vulnerability, it was assumed that low platelet MAO patients would need fewer life events to develop a psychopathological condition and that they would experience more negatively those events that occurred. Patients (n = 127) of both sexes suffering from various kinds of depressive disorders participated in the study. There were 39 unipolar patients, 11 bipo

[Psychological complaints, interpersonal problems, quality of life and sense of coherence in former German warchildren].

Recently there is a growing psychotraumatological interest in late life effects in former German warchildren. The following article focusses on kind and amount of trauma and psychopathology (Symptom Check List 90-R; SCL-90-R) in elderly people, who have grown up during World War II. By means of psychometric self-reports we assessed their current interpersonal problems (Inventory of Interpersonal Problems; IIP), the quality of life (SF-36 Health Survey) and their sense of coherence (Antonovsky's Sense of coherence-Scale; SOC). Compared to norms from the general population and from "healthy cont

The life experiences of living alone among Indonesia dwelling widowed women: A phenomenological study.

In this study, the researchers aimed to understand the life experience of older widowed women living alone. Employing a phenomenological approach, we interviewed 15 older women (age 62 to 95) living alone at homes in two villages in Central Java. Through systematic text condensation procedure, we identified five themes: (1) negative feelings at times, (2) getting used to living alone, (3) needing help to support independent living, (4) coping toward negative feelings, (5) attachment to the original house. We depicted the struggles of older women living alone in their homes. Despite the coping
