Actinomycosis--an unusual presentation.

We report an unusual presentation of orofacial actinomycosis mimicking the clinical appearance of a minor salivary gland tumour of the upper lip. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis and we think that the lesion was caused by infection of a mucocele of the upper lip by Actinomyces israelii, an oral commensal.

Congenital lesions of epithelial origin.

Defects of embryologic development give rise to a variety of congenital lesions arising from the epithelium and are among the most common congenital lesions of the head and neck in the pediatric population. This article presents several congenital lesions of epithelial origin, including congenital midline cervical cleft, pilomatrixoma, dermoid, foregut duplication cysts, and preauricular sinuses and pits. In addition, the management of these lesions is reviewed.

Survival of Danish cancer patients 1943-1987. Buccal cavity and pharynx.

Cancers of the buccal cavity and pharynx are anatomically related and (with the exception of cancers of the salivary glands and nasopharynx) share risk factors, i.e., tobacco and alcohol. For cancers of the lip ("lipstick area") exposure to sunlight is also an important risk factor. Cancers of the buccal cavity and pharynx are rare tumours, accounting for less than 2% of all malignant tumours in Denmark. The largest group is lip cancers (6545 cases in 1943-87) for which the survival rate remained high during the study period, 95-99% of patients surviving longer than five years. Survival from c

Evaluation of GLUT-1 in the granular cell tumour and congenital granular cell epulis.

BACKGROUND: The glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT-1) protein is a useful marker for perineurial cells. Because of the possible neuroectodermal histogenesis of the granular cell tumour and congenital granular cell epulis, the aim of this study was to assess the immunoexpression of GLUT-1 protein in granular cell tumour and congenital granular cell epulis to aid in clarifying their histogenesis. METHODS: The protocol of this study was approved by the Committee of Bioethics in Research at Universidade Federal Minas Gerais. Six cases of granular cell tumour and three cases of congenital granular c

Carboplatin plus ftorafur as a palliative treatment in locally advanced cancer of the oral cavity and lip.

Forty consecutive patients with local advanced cancer of the oral cavity and lip, heavily pretreated, were palliated with two courses of carboplatin, 400 mg/m2 intravenously once a month plus ftorafur, 500 mg/m2 daily per os for 30 days. Previous treatment consisted of surgery (17 patients), radiation therapy (23 patients), and chemotherapy with cisplatin plus bleomycin (15 patients). The main sites of primary tumor were the tongue (12 patients), hard palate (6 patients), retromolar area (6 patients), tonsils (6 patients), perioral skin and lip (5 patients), and floor of the mouth (5 patients)

Evaluation of neck metastases in T1N0 lip cancers.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological features and mid-term follow-up outcomes of patients with T1N0 lip squamous cell carcinoma who underwent or did not undergo neck dissection. METHODS: A total of 66 patients who underwent surgical treatment for T1N0 lip cancer were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups: those who did not undergo neck dissection (group 1, n = 31) and those who did (group 2, n = 35). The specific characteristics of these two groups were examined histopathologically, and the patients' postoperative follow-up was evaluated in te

[Vitamin A acid for the topical management of epithelial neoplasms. Combination with 5-fluorouracil].

15 patients with superficial basaliomas or premalignant epithelial neoplastic disorders (actinic keratosis, leukoplakia, Bowen's disease) were treated locally over three weeks with retinoic acid (RA) alone or in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In 11 cases the lesions disappeared clinically, however, only 5 patients proved to be cured by histological examination. 4 of them were treated with RA combined with 5-FU. There was a decrease of the 3H-index after the first week and an increase after the third week of treatment. These findings suggest, that RA inhibits the proliferation of neopl

Global, regional and national burden of lip and oral cavity cancer from 1990 to 2021 and projections to 2036.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the global trends in the incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of lip and oral cavity cancer from 1990 to 2021, analyze regional, age and gender differences in lip and oral cavity cancer across the world, and predict future trends. METHODS: The data were all from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, calculating the global incidence, mortality and DALY rates of lip and oral cavity cancer per 100,000 population. The estimated annual percent change (EAPC) was calculated and a Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) analysis was conducted. The fit

Prosthetic reconstruction of a patient with an irradiated rhinectomy and upper lip resection with a maxillofacial prosthesis and removable complete dentures: A clinical report.

When surgery is performed to remove aggressive cancer, the extent of the lesion commands the amount of tissue removed. The removal of extensive tissue such as crucial landmarks complicates prosthesis design. This clinical report describes the prosthetic reconstruction of a patient who underwent tumor resection of the upper lip, anterior portion of the nasal cavity, and cartilaginous portion of the nasal septum, as well as subsequent radiation therapy. The prosthetic rehabilitation consisted of magnetic attachments, eyeglasses, and silicone adhesives. The applied technique effectively covered t

Stage is a prognostic factor for surgically treated patients with early-stage lip cancer for whom a 'wait and see' policy in terms of neck status has been implemented.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the locoregional control and survival rates (in terms of risk factors) of patients who underwent surgical resection of early-stage lip cancer and for whom a 'wait and see' policy in terms of neck status had been implemented. METHODS: The sociodemographic data, tumour stage, tumour characteristics and histopathological features of 41 patients with early-stage lip cancer were evaluated. Factors predictive of survival and locoregional recurrence were analysed. The five-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates were determined, and the prognostic risk factors

Changes in the Incidence of Skin and Lip Cancer Between 1978 and 2007.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze trends in the incidence of skin cancer worldwide, in Europe, and in Spain between 1978 and 2007. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Skin cancer incidence and trends for the period 1978 to 2007 were investigated using the age- and sex-standardized rates (per 100,000 population) published in the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series. RESULTS: The incidence of cutaneous melanoma increased progressively from 1978 to 2002 but decreased in the last period analyzed (2003-2007). The highest rates were reported for Australia and the white population in Hawai

Sclerotherapy followed by surgery for the treatment of oral hemangioma: a report of two cases.

Hemangiomas, vascular malformations, and varices are common benign vascular lesions in the head and neck region. They can occur in the mouth and primarily affect the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, and palate. The main types of treatments are surgery and intralesional injection of sclerosant agents. However, other therapies have been considered, such as systemic corticosteroids, laser therapy, interferon a, and cryotherapy. Currently, sclerotherapy is employed largely because of its efficiency and ability to conserve the surrounded tissues. Surgery can be used exclusively or associated with scler

Cleft lip and palate in family members of cancer survivors.

The presence of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) in family members of cancer patients was investigated. An epidemiological questionnaire including family history of cancer and congenital oral cleft malformations was administered to 168 cancer survivors and a population-based sample of 170 healthy subjects. In the control group, 1.2% reported a family member with CL/P; among cancer survivors the figure was 4.2% (odds ratio: 3.7; 95% confidence interval: 0.75–17.8; p = .07). Among cancer survivors with a family member with CL/P, there was an apparent excess of testicular cancer and

Hair-bearing temporoparietal fascial flap reconstruction of upper lip and scalp defects.

BACKGROUND: The temporoparietal fascial flap has proven to be a versatile flap for a broad spectrum of reconstructive problems in the head and neck. The temporoparietal fascial flap is a thin, pliable layer of richly vascularized tissue that may be transferred either pedicled or free and alone or as a carrier of subjacent bone or overlying skin and scalp. OBJECTIVE: To report our experience using a hair-bearing temporoparietal fascial flap for reconstruction in 6 male patients with extensive upper lip and scalp defects, including a discussion of the surgical anatomy and technique. METHODS: T
