The aim of the study was to investigate and follow up the tonotopic organization of the primary auditory cortex in otosclerotic patients before and after corrective surgery. The characteristics of primary auditory cortex activation were studied in ten otosclerotic patients (i.e., subjects suffering from a conductive hearing loss, prior to and following stapes substitution). Magnetoencephalographic recordings of auditory evoked fields by tone-burst stimulation at octave frequencies between 250 and 2000 Hz were performed during monaural stimulation. The brain topography of the main cortical resp

Auditory hallucinations (AH), the perception of sounds and voices in the absence of external stimuli, remain a serious problem for a large subgroup of patients with schizophrenia. Functional imaging of brain activity associated with AH is difficult, since the target event is involuntary and its timing cannot be predicted. Prior efforts to image the patterns of cortical activity during AH have yielded conflicting results. In this study, MEG was used to directly image the brain electrophysiological events associated with AH in schizophrenia. We observed an increase in theta rhythm, as sporadic b

OBJECTIVE: We investigated early brain activity (under 200 ms after the stimulus onset) related to the encoding and the retrieval of verbal information.
METHODS: First, we compared ERPs produced by words which were encoded to ERPs produced by words from following test phases (correctly identified repetitions and correctly classified new words) in two different experiments. Experiment 1 consisted of an intentional learning paradigm and experiment 2 consisted of an incidental learning paradigm. In addition, we conducted a control experiment (experiment 3), which was a continuous recognition tas

There is increasing evidence in man that the cortical drive to motor neurons is rhythmic. This oscillatory drive may be exaggerated in patients with cortical myoclonus. Spectral analysis of surface bipolar EEG and EMG activity was performed in eight such patients. Only three cases had evidence of giant cortical evoked potentials or a cortical correlate on back-averaging at the time of study. In six subjects, significant coherence between contralateral and vertex EEG and EMG was observed in ranges similar to that previously reported for normal subjects (15-30 and 30-60 Hz). Three out of these s

OBJECTIVE: To study the cortical physiology of fast repetitive finger movements.
METHODS: We recorded steady-state movement-related magnetic fields (ssMRMFs) associated with self-paced, repetitive, 2-Hz finger movements in a 122-channel whole-head magnetometer. The ssMRMF generators were determined by equivalent current dipole (ECD) modeling and co-registered with anatomical magnetic resonance images (MRIs).
RESULTS: Two major ssMRMF components occurred in proximity to EMG onset: a motor field (MF) peaking at 37+/-11 ms after EMG onset, and a postmovement field (post-MF), with inverse polari

OBJECTIVE: Evidence supports abnormal temporal lobe structure and function in schizophrenia. Some abnormalities, particularly involving the auditory cortex, appear to be sex specific. These findings were extended to anatomical and physiological descriptors.
METHOD: The authors quantified the volume, surface area, and three-dimensional location of Heschl's gyri on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of 21 patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 24 healthy comparison subjects. Neuromagnetic localizations of the 100-msec latency auditory evoked field (M100) were compared with MRI-determined

We studied nine patients with unilateral abrupt deafness caused by acoustic neuroma surgery. Cortical responses to tones delivered to the intact ear were recorded postoperatively with a 122-channel whole-scalp neuromagnetometer. In three patients, followed for 12 months with 2-4 measurements, evoked responses originating in the auditory cortices were weak and delayed one month after the operation in both hemispheres. During the follow-up, the amplitudes reached the control level. No response abnormalities were found in patients who were studied 1.5-4.5 years after the operation. Our findings s

Although semantic cognition remains behaviorally stable with age, neuroimaging studies report age-related alterations in response to semantic context. To address these inconsistent findings, we combined behavioral and magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures and examined the neural mechanisms underlying lexical-semantic processing in healthy aging. Forty-six Finnish-speaking adults across younger (22 - 32 years) and older (62 - 69 years) cohorts performed a semantic congruency judgment task on word pairs. Both age groups performed the task with high accuracy, with older adults responding faster t…

Since young adults hear sounds up to 20 kHz, the loss of extended high-frequency hearing (EHF; above 8 kHz) is a hallmark of age-related hearing loss, often progressing from early lifetime. However, this deficit frequently goes undetected because routine clinical hearing tests and most hearing aids are currently mostly limited to 8 kHz. EHF hearing has been linked to deficits in speech perception in noise and to self-reported hearing. However, it remains elusive how EHF hearing influences speech intelligibility. Here we recorded neuromagnetic brain responses using magnetoencephalography (MEG) …

Parkinson's disease is characterized by a range of motor and non-motor changes that can negatively impact quality of life. Many studies have identified potential clinical electrophysiological correlates of Parkinson's disease with an aim of developing new methods of identifying at-risk patients and forming the basis of therapeutic interventions. However, these studies do not present consistent results, and a formal meta-analysis is warranted to identify reliable EEG or magnetoencephalography (M/EEG) characteristics across datasets. In this meta-analysis of open-access M/EEG datasets (n = 6; 4 …

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) provides promising evidence as a technology to modulate brain oscillations. Individualized brain oscillation measures from magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG) (M/EEG) can optimize frequency, location (montage), and timing of tACS. This systematic review aims to comprehensively characterize the parameter space and outcomes of M/EEG-informed personalized tACS interventions.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature up to January 2024, per PRISMA guidelines. The pre-registered search strateg…

INTRODUCTION: Early life stress (ELS) has been identified as a major risk factor for the development of various disorders in adulthood. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ELS on adult brain function by focusing on the aperiodic component (exponent and offset) of neural activity-a novel neurophysiological marker thought to reflect the excitation and inhibition (E/I) balance.
METHODS: We recruited 65 healthy adults as participants in this study. Resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data were recorded for 5 min with eyes closed. ELS was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questi…

The clinical presentation and neurobiology of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) - also referred to as concussion - are complex and multifaceted, and interrelationships between neurobiological measures derived from neuroimaging are poorly understood. This study applied machine learning (ML) to multimodal whole-brain functional connectomes from magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and structural connectomes from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a test of discriminative accuracy in cases of mTBI. Resting state MEG (amplitude envelope correlations), fMRI…

OBJECTIVE: Somatosensory evoked fields (SEF) recorded using magnetoencephalography enable non-invasive measurement of the cortical activity within the afferent somatosensory pathway. Because MRI studies suggest that delayed myelination and damage to the white matter contribute to adverse effects on neurological development in preterm infants, early functional markers of brain maturation are of particular interest.
METHODS: In this single-center pilot study, SEFs were recorded using tactile stimulation in 13 preterm infants examined at 36 weeks' gestational age (GA) and 8 term infants examined…

Cognitive models of reading assume that speech production occurs after visual and phonological processing of written words. This traditional view is at odds with more recent magnetoencephalography studies showing that the left posterior inferior frontal cortex (pIFC) classically associated with spoken production responds to print at 100-150 ms after word-onset, almost simultaneously with posterior brain regions for visual and phonological processing. Yet the theoretical significance of this fast neural response remains open to date. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigat…

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a main risk factor of suicide, emphasizing the urgent need for understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying suicide attempts (SAs) in depressive patients. We hypothesized that aberrant frequency-specific functional connectivity patterns underlying an executive and inhibition task might be associated with SA in depression.
METHODS: The current study enrolled 143 subjects including 43 healthy controls and 87 patients with MDD (43 patients with SA and 44 without SA), who attended a GO/NOGO task during the magnetoencephalography recording.…

BACKGROUND: Impairment in response inhibition function is highly prevalent in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet the spatiotemporal neural activity underlying response inhibition and its relationship with the autonomic nervous system (ANS) remains unclear.
METHODS: 35 MDD participants and 35 healthy controls (HC) were included with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) data collecting during a go/no-go task. Heart rate variability (HRV) indices were calculated from the ECG data. Differences in functional connectivity (FC) of gamma oscillations (60-90 Hz) bet…
