Primary hyperparathyroidism presenting as a brown tumor in the mandible: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism is characterized by hypercalcemia and elevated or inappropriately normal serum levels of parathyroid hormone. Brown tumor of bone is a rare non-neoplastic lesion resulted from abnormal bone metabolism in hyperparathyroidism. However, nowadays, skeletal disease caused by primary hyperparathyroidism is uncommon. We report a case of brown tumor in the mandible as the initial exhibition of primary hyperparathyroidism associated with an atypical parathyroid adenoma. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 49-year-old female, she had a pain mass on the right man

Management of an aggressive giant cell granuloma of the mandible with denosumab: a case report.

The management of giant cell granulomas is challenging, and aggressive lesions have a high tendency to recur after enucleation alone. Based on assumptions regarding cell type and receptors, multiple pharmacological adjuncts have been used to manage them. We describe the use of denosumab, which was successfully used as a single method of treatment, suggesting that it may be a viable alternative or adjunct to operation on giant cell granulomas of the jaws.

Isolated Osteoma of the Ascending Process of the Maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma, the most common benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses, most commonly originates within the frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid, the maxillary sinus, and finally sphenoid. Only 2 cases of osteomas of the nasal bones were previously reported. This study describes the first reported osteoma of the ascending process of maxilla and describes its management. METHODOLOGY: A 20-year-old man was presented with left painless hard nasal swelling. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed well-circumscribed hyperdense bony mass originating from the outer surface of the left ascending p

Osteochondroma of condyle: case discussion and review of treatment modalities.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) forms a synovial articulation between the condyle and the cranium. It is a complex joint and shows hinge and gliding movements. Unlike other articulating heads, condyle grows with intramembranous ossification. TMJ is subjected to excessive loads throughout life as it supports essential functions such as mastication, deglutition, speech and respiration. Traumatic, neoplastic or non-neoplastic pathologies sometimes necessitate joint replacement therapy. Osteochondroma is one such benign tumour originating from condyle which requires surgical replacement of condyle w

Treatment of severe facial asymmetry secondary to osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle: case report.

Osteochondroma (OC) is the most common benign tumor of long bones. However it is rarely found in the facial skeleton, being the coronoid process and mandibular condyle the most affected sites in this region. It basically consists in bone growth covered by cartilage. The etiology is still controversial: neoplastic, developmental, reparative and traumatic origins have been discussed in literature. The treatments of these lesions include total condylectomy or local resection of the lesion. This paper aims to report a case of a patient with history of trauma and possible fracture of the mandibular

Giant aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible.

The aneurysmal bone cyst is a type of pseudocysts of the jaw. It is a nonneoplastic lesion of the bone, characterized by replacement with fibro-osseous tissue containing blood-filled sinusoidal or cavernous spaces. The lesion remains a relatively uncommon finding in the facial bones, and the cause and pathogenesis are yet to be elucidated. Aneurysmal bone cyst was first described as a distinct clinical and pathologic entity by Jaffe and Lichtenstein in 1942. Aneurysmal bone cyst comprises 1.5% of all nonodontogenic cysts of the jaws and 1.9% of all aneurysmal bone cysts of skeleton. A rare cas

[Clinical analysis of mandibular osteoradionecrosis].

Radiotherapy thought vital in treating head and neck cancer, occasionally causes seriously local complications such as mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN). An analysis of mandibular ORN cases showed 16 in 638 subjects treated by radiotherapy, for an ORN rate of 2.5%. This rate was highest in subjects with oral cancer excluding the tongue, administered 81 Gy radiation dose, using X-ray plus electronic beams. 8 cases of ORN occurred within 1 year following radiation, and the 8 others within 5 years. Preservation treatment was successful in 44% of ORN cases, including surgery, for which the rate

An unsuspected ameloblastoma in the subpontic region of the mandible with consideration of pathogenesis from the radiographic course.

The purpose of this report is to document a case of unsuspected ameloblastoma involving the right man dibular subpontic region in a 38-year-old Cambodian female patient. This lesion was purportedly preceded by multiple radiolucencies which were diagnosed as radicular cysts and treated a few times in the past years by enucleation followed by endodontic therapy of the affected teeth. Bridgework restoration of the partially edentulous area was performed. This case report demonstrates radiographic changes that occurred in the periods before and after the diagnosis of ameloblastoma. The case may re

Central hemangioma: an overview and case report.

Central hemangioma of the mandible and maxilla is extremely rare. Although the mucosal and soft tissue lesions are readily suspected by their clinical appearance, the intrabony lesions may be difficult to distinguish visually. The clinical and radiographic presentation is relatively nonspecific; therefore, a proper diagnosis has to be made. The management of central hemangioma is difficult because of the abundant vascular network in this region. Various therapies have been considered, but surgery has most frequently been used. A case report of an 8-year old boy with central hemangioma of the l

Radiologic and pathologic characteristics of benign and malignant lesions of the mandible.

Mandibular lesions develop from both odontogenic and nonodontogenic origins and have varying degrees of destructive potential. Common benign cystic lesions include periapical (radicular) cysts, follicular (dentigerous) cysts, and odontogenic keratocysts. Benign solid tumors represent a broad spectrum of lesions such as ameloblastomas, odontomas, ossifying fibromas, and periapical cemental dysplasia. Malignant tumors that often involve the mandible include squamous cell carcinomas, osteosarcomas, and metastatic tumors. In addition, vascular lesions such as hemangiomas and arteriovenous malforma

Cervicofacial actinomycosis after partial mandibular resection: case report.

An unusual case of cervicofacial actinomycosis in a 60-year old male Nigerian is reported. The patient had had partial mandibular resection for plexiform ameloblastoma one year earlier with insertion of Kirschner wire to serve as a splint. The authors highlight the possible pathophysiology of this condition. It is suggested that clinicians be aware of the various modes of presentation and natural history of the disease to facilitate prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. This will assist in forestalling the numerous complications that may result from actinomycosis.

The buccinator musculomucosal flap: anatomic study and clinical application.

Since 1984, we have used the buccinator muscle mucosal flap for the treatment of mucosal defects after tumor resection, osteomyelitis of the mandible, closure of cleft palate fistulas, primary closure of very wide cleft palates, and lengthening of the soft palate. A study was made in the facial regions of 14 cadavers, and a comparison was made to descriptions found in the anatomic literature. It was confirmed in our dissections that the buccal artery, which reaches the posterior half of the muscle, is the major arterial pedicle of the buccinator and that it runs very close to the buccal nerve.

Papilliferous Keratoameloblastoma (PKA): Is It a Different Clinicopathological Entity or Histological Subtype of Conventional Ameloblastoma?

BACKGROUND: Papilliferous keratoameloblastoma (PKA) is an exceptionally rare variant of conventional ameloblastoma, marked by papilliferous epithelial projections and prominent keratinization within an ameloblastomatous framework. Because of its rarity and overlap with other keratinizing odontogenic tumours, PKA is often overlooked and is not recognised in the current WHO classification. Limited awareness and inconsistent terminology contribute to diagnostic uncertainty and may affect clinical management. OBJECTIVES: This review critically analysed all published PKA cases to describe their cl

Adenoid ameloblastoma: Conservative approach in a rare odontogenic lesion.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid ameloblastoma (AA) is a newly recognized, rare odontogenic tumor variant, distinguished by histopathological features that combine characteristics of both ameloblastoma and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old female with an unilocular radiolucent lesion in the mandible associated with the impacted third molar, diagnosed as AA. Surgical management included complete lesion excision and cryotherapy. Despite the absence of significant symptoms, clinical surveillance is essential, as AA may have high recurrence rates. The recent inclusion of this entity in

Ewing sarcoma of the Mandible: a systematic review and pooled survival analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the mandible is an extremely rare malignancy, representing less than 2% of all ES cases. Due to its low incidence, most available evidence derives from isolated case reports or small case series, resulting in limited knowledge regarding its clinical characteristics, management strategies, and prognostic factors. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on mandibular ES and to analyze survival outcomes and potential prognostic factors. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Coc
