We describe the case of an 11-year-old girl in whom glucosuria detected by urine screening at school was the first clue to the diagnosis of juvenile nephronophthisis (JN). On admission, she showed renal failure with combined proximal and distal tubular defects and progressive deterioration of renal function. JN should be considered in children with glucosuria.

The concentration of unextracted urinary arginine vasopressin (UAVP) was directly measured by high-sensitive radioimmunoassay (AVP-RIA Kit, Mitsubishi Petrochemical Co., Ltd.). Urine was diluted to eliminate interference of nonspecific substance without prior extraction. When urine aliquots were diluted in 4 to 32 fold in assay buffer, the relationship between UAVP concentration and dilution ratio corresponded exactly in a linear regression line. This paper reviews the different ways currently available for screening sleeping sickness. These ways are then integrated and discussed by the author in proposing different strategic and methodologic solutions after emphasizing the role of each of the technical stages. Altogether, there isn't one standard solution but adaptations around a main plan, according to contexts and having regard to efficiency and profitability. At all events, success depends on political will, community participation and the motivation and good training of the personnel.

An attempt was made to reduce the rate of infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae among homosexual men who visit a bathhouse in Denver, Colorado, by the offer of screening cultures during the 24 hr per week of maximal use of the bathhouse. A total of 543 men were screened (646 tests). The rate of infection did not decline significantly (P less than 0.80) from the first month (31 of 272 men; 11.4%) to the third month (19 of 180 men; 10.6%) of the program. Twenty thousand Arabs of various nationalities living in Kuwait have been investigated over the past 5 years; 5,470 (27%) manifested recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU). Non-Kuwaiti Arabs were affected more the Kuwaitis and the prevalence of the disease was respectively 35% and 18%. Among Kuwaitis, only 5% of the Bedouins manifested the diseases whereas 22% of urbanized Arabs were affected. The ratio of the affected females to males in this study was 6:5.
