Postmastectomy radiotherapy: patterns of recurrence and long-term disease control using electrons.

PURPOSE: To determine the patterns of failure and prognostic factors for locoregional recurrence after postmastectomy radiotherapy (RT), using a specific electron beam technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A uniform electron beam was used in 323 patients with invasive breast cancer at the University of Florida Health Science Center. The patterns of disease recurrence, prognostic factors, and overall outcome were studied. RESULTS: At 10 years, the freedom from locoregional recurrence, disease-free survival, and absolute survival rate was 90%, 62%, and 55%, respectively. The 10-year disease-free s

[Angiosarcoma of the breast. Apropos of 8 cases and review of the literature].

The 8 cases of primary breast angiosarcoma which were diagnosed, treated and had their follow-up at the Gustave-Roussy Institute between 1954 and 1995 are reported. The age at presentation ranged from 32 to 68 years. In 4 patients the vascular nature of their mammary lesion was conspicuous by a violaceous discolorations of the overlying skin. No patient had enlarged ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes. One patient had metastases. In 2 out of 5 patients who had a partial surgical or fine-needle biopsy before treatment, the diagnosis was missed, and adequate treatment was unduly delayed. The tumor

The use of mammography in breast preservation in locally advanced breast cancer.

PURPOSE: As the feasibility of breast preservation in locally advanced breast cancer is currently under evaluation, little information is available correlating mammographic changes to chemotherapy with local outcome. To evaluate the role of mammography in selecting candidates with locally advanced breast cancer for conservative local therapy, we analyzed mammographic changes in the breast to induction chemotherapy and correlated the radiologic appearance with pathologic outcome. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1985 through 1993, 91 patients with Stage III breast cancer were enrolled on a multimod

Management of the pregnant patient with carcinoma of the breast.

The diagnosis of carcinoma of the breast during pregnancy poses a challenging dilemma. Although once regarded as incurable, recent reports reveal similar long term survival rates for pregnant and nonpregnant patients who have carcinoma of the breast. When referred to a surgeon, a pregnant woman with a suspicious mammary mass deserves an expedient histologic diagnosis; delay may jeopardize the chances of survival. Once the diagnosis is established, pregnant patients should be treated in a manner similar to nonpregnant patients because there is no evidence that carcinoma of the breast in pregnan

Mammographic findings after reshaping with autoprosthesis in women undergoing contralateral breast reconstruction and mastectomy.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Breast reduction and mastopexy combined with inferior dermo-lipo-glandular flap (autoprosthesis) gives good breast shape, long-term projection, and upper pole fullness. We assess the impact on breast oncologic surveillance compared to other techniques. METHODS: A total of 105 patients who underwent mastectomy and reconstruction were divided into 3 groups of 35 patients each: groups 1 and 2 include patients with contralateral breast symmetrization performed with and without autoprosthesis technique, respectively. Group 3 is a control group without contralateral breast resh

Multidisciplinary minimally invasive planning for synchronous breast cancer and thymoma: a scarless single-stage surgical strategy-a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous breast cancer and thymoma are uncommon clinical scenarios and are traditionally treated with phased surgery, often requiring separate operative sessions and potentially delaying comprehensive oncologic management. Although minimally invasive surgery enables single-stage approaches, the role of surgical planning in coordinating multidisciplinary procedures remains underreported. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who had synchronous thymoma and HER2-positive breast cancer. After multidisciplinary evaluation, a single-stage surgical strategy was

Unveiling the Clinicopathological Outcomes of Breast Cancer in Young Women: A perspective from resource-limited settings.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the incidence of breast cancer in young women over a ten-year period and examine its association with clinical characteristics, risk factors, treatment modalities, and survival outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Breast Cancer Registry at our institution was conducted. Of the 2,238 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2012 and 2021, 535 (23.9%) were aged 40 years or younger at the time of diagnosis. Cases with missing data for independent variables were excluded from the respective analyses. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 34

Transient long thoracic nerve injury during posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A report of two cases.

We present the transient long thoracic nerve (LTN) injury during instrumented posterior spinal arthrodesis for idiopathic scoliosis. The suspected mechanism of injury, postoperative course and final outcome is discussed. The LTN is susceptible to injury due to its long and relatively superficial course across the thoracic wall through direct trauma or tension. Radical mastectomies with resection of axillary lymph nodes, first rib resection to treat thoracic outlet syndrome and cardiac surgery can be complicated with LTN injury. LTN injury producing scapular winging has not been reported in ass

Radiation induced esophageal adenocarcinoma in a woman previously treated for breast cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Secondary radiation-induced cancers are rare but well-documented as long-term side effects of radiation in large populations of breast cancer survivors. Multiple neoplasms are rare. We report a case of esophageal adenocarcinoma in a patient treated previously for breast cancer and clear cell carcinoma of the kidney. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 year-old non smoking woman, with no alcohol intake and no familial history of cancer; followed in the National Institute of Oncology of Rabat Morocco since 1999 for breast carcinoma, presented on consultation on January 2011 with dysphagia. Sexual dysfunction in young women with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in young women with breast cancer in the Netherlands, and to assess the relationship between sexual dysfunction, treatment methods and treatment-related complaints. Also, the interest among women with breast cancer in receiving care for sexual dysfunction was determined. METHODS: Data on sexual functioning were collected through an internet questionnaire. Respondents were included if they had been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 6 years and were currently 45 years of age or younger. Resu

Surveillance of healthcare-acquired infections in Queensland, Australia: data and lessons from the first 5 years.

OBJECTIVE: To present healthcare-acquired infection surveillance data for 2001-2005 in Queensland, Australia. DESIGN: Observational prospective cohort study. SETTING: Twenty-three public hospitals in Queensland. METHODS: We used computer-assisted surveillance to identify episodes of surgical site infection (SSI) in surgical patients. The risk-adjusted incidence of SSI was calculated by means of a risk-adjustment score modified from that of the US National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System, and the incidence of inpatient bloodstream infection (BSI) was adjusted for risk on the basis

[Breast cancer treatment during pregnancy - experiences in the department of OB/GYN Grosshadern-Munich and review of international data].

With an incidence of 1 case in 3 000 to 10 000 pregnancies, breast cancer is the second common pregnancy associated malignancy besides cervical cancer. An analysis of 12 patients with pregnancy associated breast cancer, treated at the University Department of OB/GYN Grosshadern, and a review of the international literature is presented. Eight women underwent surgery during pregnancy (four radical mastectomies, four breast conserving procedures), four received CMF-chemotherapy during pregnancy (1 to 4 cycles). Three other patients were treated post partum. The tumor stages were advanced (> 2 cm

pTNM stage distribution in breast cancer: a population-based survey in northern Italy. Collaborative Group of Pathologists for Cancer Registration in Verona.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The role of distribution by stage at diagnosis in breast cancer has been considered in many studies, with particular regard to evaluation of prognosis, impact of screening programs and quality of care. Nevertheless, international comparisons of descriptive data can be hampered by lack of homogeneity in staging methods. The TNM is presently the most common staging system used all over the world, although some criticism have been raised recently against its pragmatic value. The present study reports a population-based survey of pathologic TNM distribution in incident cases o

[Renal cell carcinoma metastasizing to choroid plexus of lateral ventricle; a case report].

A rare case of renal cell carcinoma metastasizing to the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle is reported. A 59-year-old woman was admitted to our institution on November 26, 1987 complaining of left-half headache for one month. She had a past history of right nephrectomy due to renal cell carcinoma 4 years before admission, and of right radical mastectomy due to breast cancer 10 years before admission. She had no abnormal neurological findings and laboratory results were normal. CT scan revealed a well-circumscribed, apparently homogeneously enhancing mass in the left lateral ventricle wit

Evidence for individual differences in the radiosensitivity of human skin.

Previously published clinical data have been re-analysed to investigate individual differences in the radiosensitivity of human skin. In the clinical studies, acute and late skin reactions were recorded for 254 breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy to the internal mammary nodes following simple or modified radical mastectomy. Each patient was treated bilaterally with different fractionation schedules to the right and left fields. Patients were assigned prospectively to 10 different treatment groups of 11-35 patients each, with all patients in a group receiving the same pair of fraction

Metastases to the upper levels of the axillary nodes in carcinoma of the breast and its implications for nodal sampling procedures.

An axillary lymphadenectomy is important for the staging and treatment of metastatic disease in patients with carcinoma of the breast, especially since the nodal status is a primary criterion for using systemic adjuvant chemotherapy. As more conservative operations combined with radiation therapy have been increasingly used for selected patients with carcinoma of the breast, an axillary node sampling instead of a complete axillary dissection has been advocated by some oncologists. However, the possibility exists that node "sampling" understages patients who would otherwise have received adjuva

Recurrent giant phyllodes tumor of the breast: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumors (PTs) account for 0.3-1.0% of all breast tumors and often occur in women aged 35 to 55. They are similar to giant fibroadenomas. PTs are famous for local recurrence. No more than 10% of PTs grow larger than 10 cm. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines recommend extensive resection with a margin of ≥1 cm for PTs, which is much larger than that required for breast cancer. Positive resection margin is associated with recurrence. However, little is known about whether all subtypes really require radical tumor negative resection margins. CASE DESC
