The effect of mandibular setback or two-jaws surgery on pharyngeal airway among different genders.

Cephalometric studies show significant gender differences in the size of the pharyngeal airway space. This study aimed to investigate and compare morphologic changes after mandibular setback or two-jaws surgery on the pharyngeal airway in men and women using computed tomography (CT). The sample included 34 women and 13 men diagnosed with Class III skeletal deformities, who had been treated by mandibular setback or bimaxillary surgery (maxillary advancement and mandibular setback). Anteroposterior, lateral and cross-sectional area dimensions of the airway, at the level of soft palate and base o

Localized vertical maxillary ridge augmentation using symphyseal bone cores: a technique and case report.

Vertical augmentation of the alveolar ridge is intended to restore resorbed alveolar ridges. This procedure is important for the placement of dental implants in a favorable position and also to enhance restoration esthetics. This article presents an approach for vertical ridge augmentation in the anterior maxilla utilizing symphyseal bone cores. A patient presented with 2 localized bony defects around the maxillary lateral incisors. Following extraction of these teeth, vertical bone defects of 7 mm on the right and 6 mm on the left were observed in relation to the cementoenamel junction of the

Is radical surgery of an inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus obsolete? a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a locally aggressive tumor arising from the Schneiderian membrane which lines the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Aggressive surgical approaches, such as lateral rhinotomy, were used until recently for complete removal of the inverted papilloma. Currently, endoscopic resection is the gold standard in the treatment of inverted papilloma. However, there are situations that justify an open approach. For example there are studies that report a higher postoperative recurrence rate after endonasal endoscopic resection, particularly in the treatment of

Evaluation of vertical ramus osteotomy for the surgical correction of unilateral mandibular posterior vertical insufficiency: Long-term follow-up results.

PURPOSE: Unilateral posterior vertical insufficiency (PVI) is a growth defect of the mandibular condyle that results in a facial asymmetry. Various surgical procedures can be used to elongate the hypoplastic ramus. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term aesthetic and architectural outcomes of vertical ramus osteotomy (VRO) in patients with unilateral PVI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients operated on with unilateral VRO were included in this retrospective study. Aesthetic and architectural parameters were evaluated on frontal photographs as well as on frontal and lateral cephalograms p

Maxillary Artery to Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass: A Novel Technique for Exposure of the Maxillary Artery.

OBJECTIVE: To define the maxillary artery (MaxA) anatomy and present a novel technique for exposing and preparing this vessel as a bypass donor. METHODS: Cadaveric and radiologic studies were used to define the MaxA anatomy and show a novel method for harvesting and preparing it for extracranial to intracranial bypass. RESULTS: The MaxA runs parallel to the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery and is located on average 24.8 ± 3.8 mm inferior to the midpoint of the zygomatic arch. The pterygoid segment of the MaxA is most appropriate for bypass with a maximal diameter of 2.5 ± 0.

Transmaxillary approach to the anterior cavernous sinus: a microanatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Several approaches to expose the anterior cavernous sinus have been used, such as frontotemporal, orbitofrontal, anterior subtemporal, and various transfacial approaches. In an effort to gain exposure to the anterior cavernous sinus without necessitating a craniotomy or wide transfacial exposure, the authors in the present study have developed a transmaxillary approach to the cavernous sinus. METHODS: The approach was developed using data obtained by performing 24 cadaveric dissections. Using a sublabial incision to expose the maxilla, maxillotomy is performed and the course of the

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the nasopharynx. Apropos of a case].

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm, arising in the adult and more commonly in the pleura. For many years it has been referred to the serous surfaces of the body, namely pleura, peritoneum and pericardium; recently cases arising in mesenchymal organs such as lung, mediastinum, liver and paranasal sinuses were reported. We present a SFT of the nasopharynx, observed in a 41 year-old patient complaining a 6 months history of aural fullness at the right ear. Clinical examination revealed the presence of secretory otitis media and swelling of the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. CT scan

Mandibular autorotation: a critical virtual parameter in clinical decision-making regarding maxilla-first versus mandible-first sequence.

Large degrees of mandibular autorotation during intermediate splint design are prone to transfer error and decrease accuracy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of mandibular autorotation necessary to design intermediate splints for maxilla- and mandible-first sequences using virtual planning software, to help the clinical decision-making regarding the most adequate sequence for each patient. The influence of specific orthognathic movements (different vertical and sagittal changes at the Le Fort I level, cant correction) and the type of maxillofacial deformity (skeletal Class

Biomechanical evaluation of different fixation systems after Le Fort I osteotomy in polyurethane models of unilateral clefts.

We compared the stability of three different titanium plate-and-screw fixation systems after Le Fort I osteotomy in polyurethane models of unilateral clefts. Thirty-six models were divided into 3 groups. In the first group, we adapted standard Plates 1mm thick with 2.0mm screws and placed them bilaterally on the zygomatic buttress and the piriform rim. In the second group, we did the same and added Plates 0.6mm thick with 1.6mm screws between the standard 2mm miniplates on both sides. In the last group, we placed Plates 1.4mm thick with 2.0mm screws bilaterally on the maxillary zygomatic buttr

Craniofacial growth characteristics after bilateral fronto-orbital advancement in children with premature craniosynostosis.

The standardized bilateral fronto-orbital advanced method of osteotomy established at the University of Wuerzburg is applied in all forms of craniosynostosis except scaphocephalus. The intention behind early operation is to halt progression of the disorder and to institute the physiological direction that growth should take. The preoperative severity of the disorder, the particular symptoms of the various malformations concerned, and the postoperative course of growth were analyzed and assessed both clinically and cephalometrically using the retrospective evaluations of the file data of 131 ch
