Prospective memory (PM) is memory for delayed intentions. Despite its importance to everyday life, the few studies on PM function in adults with dyslexia which exist have relied on self-report measures. To determine whether self-reported PM deficits can be measured objectively, laboratory-based PM tasks were administered to 24 adults with dyslexia and 25 age- and IQ-matched adults without dyslexia. Self-report data indicated that people with dyslexia felt that time-based PM (TBPM; requiring responses at certain times in the future) was most problematic for them and so this form of PM was the f

Autobiographical memory difficulties have been widely reported in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of the current study was to explore the potential correlates of autobiographical memory performance (including depressed mood, rumination, working memory and theory of mind) in adults with ASD, relative to a group of typical adults matched for age, gender and IQ. Results demonstrated that the adults with ASD reported higher levels of depressed mood and rumination than the typical adults, and also received lower scores on measures of theory of mind and working memory. Correlatio

To examine the cognitive processing differences in chronic and episodic pain sufferers, auditory event-related potentials (P300 or P3) were recorded in two consecutive trials from 23 chronic lower back pain patients, 22 episodic tension-type headache sufferers, and from 23 age- and sex-matched healthy persons. P3 latency and amplitude showed no difference between groups at first trial. Considering P3 latency habituation, healthy controls and episodic tension-type headache sufferers showed a significant change of P3 latency whereas lower back pain sufferers failed. Comparing the amount of habit

To remember information from our personal past we need to be in a cognitive state where we treat stimuli as cues for memory retrieval. In this study we considered whether participants could exert control and disengage from a memory state when it was no longer required for the task at hand. In particular, we examined whether this ability was affected by the valence of the stimuli and participant's rumination scores. After a study phase participants completed test blocks where the task switched every two trials between a memory task (retrieving information from the study phase) and a perceptual

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (AI) need to replace glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids that act on glucocorticoid (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptors (MR). Both receptors are highly expressed in the hippocampus and are closely associated with cognitive function, which might be impaired by insufficient or increased GR and MR stimulation. However, little is known about cognitive function in patients with AI.
METHODS: It was examined whether patients with AI exhibit worse cognitive function compared to sex-, age-, and education-matched controls. Cognitive function (

Pathological doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests core deficits in memory and metamemory, but the nature of these deficits and their response to treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating (a) whether memory and metamemory problems in OCD are due to retrieval or encoding processes, and (b) the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on these functions. Sixty OCD patients and 60 matched healthy controls completed 3 episodic memory tasks involving different stimuli, with assessments of judgment-of-learning and feeling-of-knowing. OCD pati

While the somatic effects of obesity are increasingly well understood, growing evidence indicates that there is a cognitive effect such as a decline in episodic memory. Studies in animals revealed an association between obesity, memory impairment and neurotransmitters such as γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate. In the present study we aimed to assess the relation of body mass index (BMI) as indicator of overwight/obesity, memory and GABA / glutamate concentrations in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and precuneus in human subjects aged 19 to 41 years. We found that memory performance

This study describes the neuropsychological assessment of 34 patients with questionable Alzheimer's disease (QAD) followed up for 3 years. Several measures were selected from the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and compared to other cognitive tasks to assess the best neuropsychological indices for (a) detecting early memory impairment in QAD and (b) predicting conversion to AD. Concerning detection, the results indicated that a recall measure depending on semantic categorization (short-delay cued recall) signaled a memory deficit in stable QAD patients, suggesting that episodic and sema

Autobiographical memory is described as integrated part of a number of memory systems which serve different functions in human information processing. These systems are regarded to be build-up onto each other both phylo- and ontogenetically and are named 'procedural memory', 'priming', 'perceptual memory', 'semantic memory (or knowledge system)' and episodic-autobiographical memory (EAM)'. Of these, EAM requires an established self and autonoetic consciousness and processes events or personal episodes. On the brain level, EAM is based on the synchronous activation of cognitive fact-processing

In recent years, empirical data and theoretical accounts relating to the relationship between childhood victimization and psychotic experiences have accumulated. Much of this work has focused on co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or putative causal mechanisms in isolation from each other. The complexity of posttraumatic stress reactions experienced in psychosis remains poorly understood. This paper therefore attempts to synthesize the current evidence base into a theoretically informed, multifactorial model of posttraumatic stress in psychosis. Three trauma-related vulnerability factor

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is crucial for episodic memory, whereby posterior MTL preferentially represents visuospatial information, and anterior MTL is involved in the representation of semantic or conceptual information. The neurophysiological underpinnings of content-preferential organization in the developing MTL are largely unknown. Here we utilized rare electrocorticography (ECoG) recordings from 23 pediatric epilepsy patients who completed a visual scene recognition memory task to systematically examine the neurophysiological underpinnings of memory formation along the MTL long axis

The enhancing effect of emotion on subsequent memory retrieval is well established. Patients with frontotemporal dementia show profound emotion processing difficulties, yet the extent to which such deficits attenuate emotional enhancement of memory remains unknown. Here, we studied the intersection between emotion and memory using a visual forced-choice recognition test for negative and neutral stimuli in 34 patients with frontotemporal dementia compared with 10 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 15 control subjects. Control subjects and patients with Alzheimer's disease recognized more emo

Episodic memory requires the precise coordination between the hippocampus and distributed cortical regions. This may be facilitated by bursts of brain activity called high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). We hypothesized that HFOs activate specific networks during memory retrieval and aimed to describe the electrophysiological properties of HFO-associated activity. To study this, we recorded intracranial electroencephalography while human participants performed a list learning task. Hippocampal HFOs (hHFOs) increased during encoding and retrieval, and these increases correlated with memory perfo

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate the impact of a verbal memory training task on psychiatric symptoms and cognition in schizophrenia.
METHOD: As part of a larger, 6-month cognitive remediation program, 57 patients with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to receive performance-based, hierarchical training on a verbal memory task based on a dichotic listening (DL) with distracter paradigm. These patients were compared with 68 patients who had been randomly assigned to a control condition.
RESULTS: Training on the DL task was not associated with changes in general psychopathology or

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), episodes of hypersomnia, cognitive, and behavioral disturbances alternate with asymptomatic periods. Because 50% of patients report decreased academic performances, we evaluated their cognitive status during asymptomatic periods, determinants of deficits, and changes during follow-up.
METHODS: The cognitive assessment during asymptomatic periods in all consecutive patients with typical KLS and healthy controls included the non-verbal intelligence quotient (Raven Progressive Matrices), the Trail Making Test, the Stroop Color-Word Test, the Wech

Stressors may initially precipitate affective episodes, but with sufficient numbers of recurrences, episodes can occur more autonomously. It is postulated the memory engram for these recurrent depressions moves from the conscious representational memory system to the unconscious habit memory system encoded in the striatum. If this were the case, cognitive behavior therapy targeted toward extinction of habit memories could be an effective maneuver for helping reverse the automaticity of affective episode recurrence. Extinction training in the reconsolidation window (which opens about 5min to 1h

How are past experiences reconstructed from memory? Learning is thought to compress external inputs into low-dimensional hippocampal representations, later expanded into high-dimensional cortical activity during recall. Hippocampal ripples, brief high-frequency bursts linked to retrieval, may initiate this expansion. Analysing intracranial EEG data from patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy during an episodic memory task, we found that cortical dimensionality increased following ripple events during correct, but not incorrect, retrieval. This expansion correlated with faster reaction times

Childhood cases of global anterograde amnesia, visual agnosia or alexia without agraphia, either alone or in any combination, are extremely rare. Here we report the case of a male adolescent, Neil (a pseudonym), who consequent to a pineal tumour began to exhibit all three disorders in the presence of normal verbal intelligence. The most surprising aspect of Neil's case, however, is his ability to retrieve postmorbid memories through the act of writing without being able to provide any oral account of the content of his written reports. His memory retrieval thus has some of the character of 'au

PURPOSE: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a common concern among breast cancer (BC) patients receiving chemotherapy, yet predictors of short-term cognitive change remain unclear. This study examined whether baseline cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) moderate changes in objectively assessed cognitive function from pre- to post-chemotherapy in BC patients, compared with age-matched healthy controls.
METHODS: This prospective study included assessments at baseline (pre-chemotherapy) and approximately a five-month follow-up (post-chemot

Human memory consolidation involves the gradual stabilization and reorganization of memory traces over time. Despite numerous empirical and computational accounts emphasizing different aspects of this process, an integrated framework for evaluating consolidation theories against brain data remains limited. We propose a biologically informed, data-driven framework based on Koopman operator analysis to examine latent dynamical structure in fMRI signals associated with memory consolidation. The Koopman framework lifts nonlinear brain dynamics into a linear function space, enabling spectral charac
