The Nexus of Heavy Metals and Antibiotic Resistance: Investigating Industrial Effluent-Associated Bacterial Strains.

Industrial effluents are reservoirs for multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria due to co-selection pressure from heavy metals and residual antibiotics. This study assessed the prevalence of heavy metal- and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wastewater from four industrial sectors in the Hayatabad Industrial Zone, Peshawar, Pakistan. A total of 23 bacterial isolates were obtained from 16 composite samples; while this sample size is appropriate for an initial characterization in this understudied region, it highlights the need for expanded surveillance. Isolates included Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacil…

Microfungi, Mycotoxins and Heavy Metals in the Mass Rearing of Tenebrio molitor L. Larvae.

Since Tenebrio molitor L. was approved by the EU as novel food in 2021, food safety is paramount for both chemically and microbiologically safe products. Since T. molitor larvae are reared on substrates mainly based on cereals, mycotoxins and heavy metals may represent a serious risk. However, analyses of mycotoxins and heavy metals are complex and cost-intensive procedures, which may not be affordable for small-scale farmers on a regular basis. To provide a preliminary risk assessment and to add further insights to existing knowledge, this study used a rapid screening method based on MALDI-TO…

Basin-specific criteria derivation and risk prioritization of heavy metals in the Yellow River.

The Yellow River serves as a critical water source for northern China, yet basin‑wide information on heavy metal pollution, ecological and human health risks, and region‑specific regulatory thresholds remains limited. Here, nine heavy metals were analyzed in water and organisms across the Yellow River Basin (YRB) and an integrated risk assessment was conducted using newly derived basin‑specific water quality criteria (WQCs). Most metals exhibited elevated levels in the middle reaches, whereas As was enriched upstream. Industrial and transportation activities mainly contributed to Mn, Zn, Ni, C…

Biphasic Extraction of Selected Heavy Metals From Corn With the Aid of Kosmotropic Salts.

This study investigated the use of aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) with kosmotropic salts for the extraction of toxic heavy metals from maize. Heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and iron (Fe), are harmful to human health because they accumulate in the food chain and may cause kidney damage, cancer and nervous system problems. This study tested copper sulphate (CuSO4) and magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) as extracting agents under different conditions of salt concentration, solvent volume and maize mass. The extracted metals were analysed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS).…

The Influence of Incorporating Alkaline Metals on Alumina for Xylitol Hydrogenolysis over Ni Catalysts.

Bifunctional nickel catalysts, Ni/MO-Al2O3 (M = Ba, Ca, Mg, and La) were prepared by the coprecipitation method for the support, followed by … ation and the retro-aldol reaction, which favors C2-C3 bond cleavage. The incorporation of alkaline metals reduced the formation of cracked products, such as methane and carbon dioxide, while increasing glycol yields. A combined yield of 80% of propylene glycol (PG) and ethylene glycol (EG) was thus obtained over Ni/BA at 200 °C and 40 bar H2 pressure.

Gestational exposure to metals and small vulnerable newborns: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Small vulnerable newborns (SVNs), defined as babies affected by preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), or low birth weight (LBW), face a substantially increased risk of chronic diseases over their lifespan and premature mortality. Gestational exposure to heavy metals may play a role in the aetiology of SVNs. Although previous limited systematic reviews have examined individual metal(loid)s and single SVN outcomes, their findings remain inconclusive. Given the recent surge in studies, the use of diverse biospecimens, and the narrow scope of prior search strategies, ou…

Mitochondrial Toxicology of Heavy Metals and Pesticides: Transport Systems, Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Permeability Transition.

Mitochondrial transport systems are essential regulators of cellular bioenergetics, calcium homeostasis, and metabolic signaling, and have emerged as critical targets of environmental toxicants. Although heavy metals and pesticides act through distinct primary mechanisms, increasing evidence indicates that they converge on a common network of mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by oxidative stress, impaired metabolite transport, calcium dyshomeostasis, and sensitization to mitochondrial permeability transition. This review provides an updated overview of the major mitochondrial transport s…

Heavy metals promote the formation of multidrug-tolerant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli persisters.

Bacterial persisters are dormant phenotypic variants that are tolerant to antibiotics, contributing to treatment failure and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Although the formation of persisters has been extensively studied in regards to bacterial infections and treatment, such as antibiotic exposure or intracellular survival within macrophages, the role of environmental stressors in persister formation remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigate the role of environmental heavy metals, specifically arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), in promoting persister cel…

Antiferromagnetic semiconductor nature in a GeS2 monolayer doped with Mn and Fe transition metals.

The absence of intrinsic magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials demands functionalization as necessary for broadening their applications. In this work, doping with transition metals (Mn and Fe) is proposed to modify the electronic and magnetic properties of a GeS2 monolayer. A pristine monolayer is an indirect gap semiconductor with an energy gap of 0.73(1.47) eV computed by using the PBE(HSE06) functional. Significant magnetism with a total magnetic moment of 1.18μB emerges in the GeS2 monolayer upon creating a single Ge vacancy, which is produced mainly by six nearest neighboring S atom…
