The Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) magnetic resonance imaging quality assurance update.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal quantitative evaluation of cartilage disease requires reproducible measurements over time. We report 8 years of quality assurance (QA) metrics for quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) knee analyses from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) and show the impact of MR system, phantom, and acquisition protocol changes. METHOD: Key 3T MR QA metrics, including signal-to-noise, signal uniformity, T2 relaxation times, and geometric distortion, were quantified monthly on two different phantoms using an automated program. RESULTS: Over 8 years, phantom measurements showed root-m

Preliminary Assessment of the Safety of a Fault-Tolerant Control-based Wearable Tremor Suppression Glove.

The advent of wearable tremor suppression de-vices (WTSDs) has provided a promising alternative approach for parkinsonian tremor management, especially for individuals whose tremors are not managed by conventional treatment options. Currently, research in WTSDs has shown successful results with a tremor suppression ratio of up to 99 %; however, the user safety of WTSDs has not been properly considered, especially in the occurrence of unexpected events, such as faults and disturbances. In this study, a fault-tolerant control system was developed and integrated into the control system of a WTSD

Focus on renal morphology, chronic kidney disease, and urinary system malignancies in acromegaly: report on data collected over a 40-year period.

PURPOSE: Long-term renal consequences of acromegaly remain poorly characterized. We assessed prevalence and independent predictors of renal cysts, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the frequency of urinary-system malignancies, in a large acromegaly cohort. METHODS: 394 acromegaly patients managed at a single tertiary center over four decades were retrospectively evaluated. Renal cyst and CKD predictors were identified by binary multivariate logistic regression with sensitivity analyses including IGF-1 exposure metrics; eGFR trajectories by nested analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Standardized

Predicting Severe Knee Arthritis Based on Two Inertial Measurement Unit Sensors as a Dynamic Coordinate System Using Classical Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Aging of societies in recent and upcoming years has made musculoskeletal disorders a significant challenge for healthcare system. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive musculoskeletal disorder that is typically diagnosed using radiographs. Considering the drawbacks of X-ray imaging, such as exposure to ionizing radiation, the need for a noninvasive, low-cost alternative method for diagnosing KOA is essential. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of a wearable device to differentiate between healthy individuals and those with severe osteoarthritis (grade 4). M

Human-like AI-based auto-field-in-field whole-brain radiotherapy treatment planning with conversation large language model feedback.

BACKGROUND: Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is a common treatment due to its simplicity and effectiveness. While automated Field-in-Field (Auto-FiF) functions assist WBRT planning in modern treatment planning systems, it still requires manual approaches for optimal plan generation including patient-specific hyperparameters definition and plan refinement based on quality feedback. PURPOSE: This study introduces an automated WBRT planning pipeline that integrates a deep learning (DL) Hyperparameter Prediction model for patient-specific parameter generation and a large-language model (LLM)-based

Multivariate stochastic coupling in unknown complex systems: Informative randomness in deterministic brain-body communication.

Physiological systems exhibit deterministic behavior influenced by dynamic stochasticity, where informative random components play a crucial role in complex system interactions. Fully characterizing multivariate random components is challenging when the underlying deterministic dynamics are unknown. We propose a framework for estimating stochastic coupling in unknown deterministic systems influenced by dynamic noise. Building on a multivariate extension of approximate entropy (MApEn), the proposed framework exploits the divergence of this metric in the presence of dynamical noise. After establ

From monitoring metrics to decision evidence: validating actionability in applied sport science.

In high-performance sport, athlete monitoring and management systems now make physiological, biomechanical, and contextual data easier to collect and share than ever before. Yet it remains unclear whether this expansion has produced better decisions or improved athlete-relevant outcomes. Existing frameworks classify monitoring tools, establish standards for verifying and validating biometric technologies for a stated use, and, increasingly, link patterns of monitoring signals to candidate coaching actions. These advances are necessary, but they do not establish whether valid monitoring informa

Failure to rescue and predictors of severe morbidity after esophagectomy: a single-center experience from a high-volume Italian referral center.

BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy for cancer remains a high-risk procedure. Failure to rescue (FTR) - death following a major complication - is a key metric for surgical quality. This study evaluates FTR incidence and predictors of severe morbidity in a high-volume center with standardized clinical pathways. METHODS: We analyzed a prospectively maintained database of patients undergoing curative- intent esophagectomy at a high-volume Italian referral center (2017-2024). Failure to Rescue (FTR) - defined as 90-day mortality after Clavien-Dindo ≥IIIa complications - was tracked as the primary benchmark

Odor tracking in flying Drosophila requires visual reafference and compass neurons.

Flying Drosophila critically depend on high-contrast visual surroundings to localize odor sources in still air, yet the neural mechanisms of visual integration for active odor tracking are unknown. We demonstrate that E-PG neurons-head direction cells in the central complex-work in concert with self-generated visual motion signals to maintain a stable heading metric during olfactory navigation in flight. Using a magnetic tether system and a digital "visual clamp", we show that removing the visual feedback generated by a fly's own turns (reafference) causes the animal to lose its heading within

An end-to-end quality assurance procedure for pelvic VMAT using optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters and an anthropomorphic phantom.

BACKGROUND: Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) enables highly conformal pelvic dose delivery, but its clinical benefit depends on agreement between the Treatment Planning System (TPS) calculation and the dose actually delivered in anatomically realistic conditions. PURPOSE: To experimentally validate VMAT dosimetric accuracy for cervical cancer using optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs) placed in an anthropomorphic female pelvic phantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A female pelvic phantom was CT-scanned. A dual-arc VMAT plan was created in Eclipse (v18) using the Acuros XB al

Changes in the network temperature of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among children and adolescents following earthquakes.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are among the most prevalent mental health sequelae in children and adolescents following earthquakes. A recently introduced metric under network theories of psychopathology, network temperature, quantifies the global stability of a symptom network. METHODS: To examine the developmental trajectory of network temperature in children and adolescents after earthquakes, we established eight prospective cohorts (2-4 waves per cohort; total N = 5,794) after the Wenchuan, Yaan, and Jiuzhaigou earthquakes. We assessed PTSD symptoms across thre

Video-based markerless assessment of bilateral upper limb motor activity following cervical spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in computer vision have positioned pose estimation as a powerful tool for analyzing human movement from video data. However, its application to neurological populations, particularly individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI), remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of three video-based pose estimation algorithms in detecting upper limb motor impairments in individuals with cervical SCI, and to determine their reliability and sensitivity in comparison with marker-based motion capture. METHODS: Twelve individuals with cervical SCI

Speed-dependent increase in lumbar lordosis is independent of anterior pelvic tilt and lumbo-pelvic extension during treadmill running.

Lumbar lordosis (LL) is recognised as a factor affecting the mechanical load on the lumbar spine. As the forces and torques on the lumbar spine increase with running speed, assessment of LL may become increasingly important for injury prevention. Nevertheless, published data on LL during running are limited to a single slow speed. Here we show the response of LL to different running speeds, from slow running to sprinting. We recorded kinematic data of treadmill running at 4.0, 5.5, 7.0, and 8.5 m/s from 18 male athletes using a motion capture system, and evaluated LL based on markers placed on

Achieving Occam's razor: Deep learning for optimal model reduction.

All fields of science depend on mathematical models. Occam's razor refers to the principle that good models should exclude parameters beyond those minimally required to describe the systems they represent. This is because redundancy can lead to incorrect estimates of model parameters from data, and thus inaccurate or ambiguous conclusions. Here, we show how deep learning can be powerfully leveraged to apply Occam's razor to model parameters. Our method, FixFit, uses a feedforward deep neural network with a bottleneck layer to characterize and predict the behavior of a given model from its inpu

Image-Level Adaptive Adversarial Ranking for Person Re-Identification.

The potential vulnerability of deep neural networks and the complexity of pedestrian images, greatly limits the application of person re-identification techniques in the field of smart security. Current attack methods often focus on generating carefully crafted adversarial samples or only disrupting the metric distances between targets and similar pedestrians. However, both aspects are crucial for evaluating the security of methods adapted for person re-identification tasks. For this reason, we propose an image-level adaptive adversarial ranking method that comprehensively considers two aspect

A simple three-cylinder radiometer and low-speed anemometer to characterize human extreme heat exposure.

As populations and temperatures of urban areas swell, more people face extreme heat and are at increasing risk of adverse health outcomes. Radiation accounts for much of human heat exposure but is rarely used as heat metric due to a lack of cost-effective and accurate sensors. To this end, we fuse the concepts of a three-globe radiometer-anemometer with a cylindrical human body shape representation, which is more realistic than a spherical representation. Using cost-effective and readily available materials, we fabricated two combinations of three cylinders with varying surface properties. The

Few-shot learning for the classification of intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn's disease on endoscopic images: A novel learn-to-learn framework.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Standard deep learning methods have been found inadequate in distinguishing between intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) and Crohn's disease (CD), a shortcoming largely attributed to the scarcity of available samples. In light of this limitation, our objective is to develop an innovative few-shot learning (FSL) system, specifically tailored for the efficient categorization and differential diagnosis of CD and ITB, using endoscopic image data with minimal sample requirements. METHODS: A total of 122 white-light endoscopic images (99 CD images and 23 ITB images) were collected (one
