Group testing regression model estimation when case identification is a goal.

Group testing is frequently used to reduce the costs of screening a large number of individuals for infectious diseases or other binary characteristics in small prevalence situations. In many applications, the goals include both identifying individuals as positive or negative and estimating the probability of positivity. The identification aspect leads to additional tests being performed, known as "retests", beyond those performed for initial groups of individuals. In this paper, we investigate how regression models can be fit to estimate the probability of positivity while also incorporating

Sequential hypothesis testing with spatially correlated presence-absence data.

A pest management decision to initiate a control treatment depends upon an accurate estimate of mean pest density. Presence-absence sampling plans significantly reduce sampling efforts to make treatment decisions by using the proportion of infested leaves to estimate mean pest density in lieu of counting individual pests. The use of sequential hypothesis testing procedures can significantly reduce the number of samples required to make a treatment decision. Here we construct a mean-proportion relationship for Oligonychus perseae Tuttle, Baker, and Abatiello, a mite pest of avocados, from empir

Predicting allergic disease at age four using an atopy predisposition score at age two: the application of item response theory.

When defining allergic outcomes in epidemiology studies, results of the skin prick test (SPT) panel are often dichotomized as positive/negative or categorized based on the number of positive responses. Item response theory (IRT) models, however, may prove to be a better alternative with the ability to generate scores that account for both type and number of positive SPTs. IRT was applied to SPT responses administered to 537 children at age two to determine predictability of allergic disease at age four. The children received SPTs to 15 aeroallergens and two foods. Atopy predisposition scores w

Case series in cognitive neuropsychology: promise, perils, and proper perspective.

Schwartz and Dell (2010) advocated for a major role for case series investigations in cognitive neuropsychology. They defined the key features of this approach and presented a number of arguments and examples illustrating the benefits of case series studies and their contribution to computational cognitive neuropsychology. In the Special Issue on "Case Series in Cognitive Neuropsychology" there are six commentaries on Schwartz and Dell as well as a response to the six commentaries by Dell and Schwartz (2011 this issue). In this paper, I provide a brief summary of the key points made in Schwart

Facing the challenge of variation in neuropsychological populations: lessons from biology.

Two ways of dealing with variation in biological populations are discussed. The first is referred to as the natural state model, an approach originated by Aristotle. The second emerged when biologists understood that lawful variation could be ascribed to an entire population of individuals as an organizational unit. This article establishes that the emphasis on single-case studies is driven by assumptions on the nature of variation that conform exactly to the natural state model. By contrast, the alternative case-series approach is consistent with population thinking in modern biology.

On the use of different methodologies in cognitive neuropsychology: drink deep and from several sources.

Cognitive neuropsychology has championed the use of single-case research design. Recently, however, case series designs that employ multiple single cases have been increasingly utilized to address theoretical issues using data from neuropsychological populations. In this paper, we examine these methodologies, focusing on a number of points in particular. First we discuss the use of dissociations and associations, often thought of as a defining feature of cognitive neuropsychology, and argue that they are better viewed as part of a spectrum of methods that aim to explain and predict behaviour.

Types of case series--the anatomically based approach: commentary on M. F. Schwartz & G. S. Dell: case series investigations in cognitive neuropsychology.

The paper addresses a weakness in the Schwartz and Dell paper (2010)-namely, its discussion of the inclusion criteria for case series. The paper distinguishes the different types that exist and how they constrain the theoretical conclusions that one can draw about the organization of the normal cognitive system. Four different types of inclusion criteria are considered. Two are those treated by Schwartz and Dell-namely, theoretically derived clinical criteria, such as the example of semantic dementia, and broad clinical criteria such as the presence of aphasia. In addition, in the present pape

Is tetrachloroethylene genotoxic or not?

A recent study published in Mutagenesis, in which the ability of tetrachloroethylene to induce DNA damage, detected by the alkaline comet assay, in mouse tissues (liver and kidney) was examined, has resulted in different interpretations of the data for liver as either positive or negative for genotoxicity. Here, I discuss the statistical approaches used and comment on the different conclusions reached.

It is too early for adjusting the adjustment disorder category.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the relative frequency with which the diagnosis of adjustment disorder is made, there is a very limited research literature in regard to its cause, epidemiology and treatment. This review summarizes recent papers and findings in relation to this diagnostic category. RECENT FINDINGS: The conceptual underpinnings of the diagnosis adjustment disorder is the subject of ongoing debate as is its differentiation from other psychiatric disorders such as depressive disorders. One group has proposed and tested a diagnostic model of adjustment disorder as a stress-response syn

Tracking large solid constructs suspended in a rotating bioreactor: A combined experimental and theoretical study.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the trajectory of a large solid cylindrical disc suspended within a fluid-filled rotating cylindrical vessel. The experimental set-up is relevant to tissue-engineering applications where a disc-shaped porous scaffold is seeded with cells to be cultured, placed within a bioreactor filled with nutrient-rich culture medium, which is then rotated in a vertical plane to keep the growing tissue construct suspended in a state of "free fall." The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions based on the model of Cummings and

A mathematical model of human respiration at altitude.

We developed a mathematical model of human respiration in the awake state that can be used to predict changes in ventilation, blood gases, and other critical variables during conditions of hypocapnia, hypercapnia and these conditions combined with hypoxia. Hence, the model is capable of describing ventilation changes due to the hypocapnic-hypoxia of high altitude. The basic model is that of Grodins et al. [Grodins, F. S., J. Buell, and A. J. Bart. J. Appl. Physiol. 22:260-276, 1967]. We updated the descriptions of (1) the effects of blood gases on cardiac output and cerebral blood flow, (2) ac

[Contribution of simulation models to public health decisions: the influenza pandemic].

The influenza pandemic threat had led to an increased awareness and several countries have used models to assess the impact of control measures on the influenza pandemic. We reviewed the publications related to simulation models since 2003 and discuss their contribution to public health decision in France. The studies conclude that rapid control measures with a high coverage can stop a nascent pandemic. This can be applied to a community with a limited importation of cases but the quantity of antiviral drug needed would become rapidly prohibitive in case of further multiple foci. Both prophyla

Why do estimates of the acute and chronic effects of air pollution on mortality differ?

Several investigators have discussed various reasons for the large and consistent difference in the relative risk estimates per unit exposure to air pollution derived from time-series and cohort study designs. This article considers whether the two study designs are estimating fundamentally different parameters even though both are commonly expressed in terms of relative risk coefficients. A frailty model for air pollution mortality is proposed to illustrate some of the theoretical behaviors of heterogeneous populations exposed to time-varying pollution patterns and their implications for the

A dynamic friction model for haptic simulation of needle insertion.

This paper describes a new friction model, termed the brush model, suitable for haptic simulations of needle insertion in virtual environments. A novel two-layer surface contact model is presented that provides real-time rendering of friction forces at haptic refresh rates. A significant modification to the brush model is also presented, leading to a new friction model, termed the fixed bristle brush model. Simulation results show that the two models can accurately reflect the experimentally observed friction characteristics. This paper presents a simulation of friction during needle insertion

A contaminated binormal model for ROC data: Part II. A formal model.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: A contaminated binormal receiver operating characteristic (ROC) model is proposed to account for ROC data that have very few false-positive reports even though many healthy subjects are sampled. The model assumes that no signal information is captured for a proportion of abnormalities, and that these abnormalities have the same distribution as noise along the latent decision axis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors developed a formal psychophysical model, presented here in detail. They have specified the psychophysical assumptions of the theory, and have provided pro

Oscillatory dynamics of smallpox and the impact of vaccination.

The evolution of smallpox epidemics in London, 1647-1893, was studied by time series analysis of deaths from the disease in the Bills of Mortality. The interepidemic interval (T) evolved progressively from 4 years to 2 years at 1800. The dynamics of epidemics during 1647-1800 are explicable in terms of the transmission of viral diseases which shows that (i) T is determined by the product of population size (N) and susceptibility (beta), (ii) T determines the mean age of catching the disease, (iii) the system will settle at its steady-state, endemic level unless the epidemics are driven. It is

A statistical analysis of motion sickness incidence data.

This paper analyzes motion sickness data that has been obtained from experiments involving the Office of Naval Research motion generator. Based on the analysis, a mixture of two statistical populations has been postulated as an overall model of time to first emesis. Empirical evidence indicates that the subpopulation corresponding to early emesis is Weibull.
