A body-scale textile-based electromyogram monitoring system with coaxially shielded conductive yarns.

A crucial aim of wearable electronics is to acquire biological signals from the body with high precision. However, obtaining high-accuracy electromyogram (EMG) signals from a large area surrounded by noise sources remains challenging. In this study, we present a body-scale textile-based wireless electromyogram monitoring system with coaxially shielded conductive yarns that can reduce the influence of surrounding noise. The wiring yarns comprise three stretchable components: a conductive signal yarn, polyurethane insulating layer, and shielding conductor. The introduction of the shielding condu

Trade-Offs Between Simplifying Inertial Measurement Unit-Based Movement Recordings and the Attainability of Different Levels of Analyses: Systematic Assessment of Method Variations.

BACKGROUND: Human movement activity is commonly recorded with inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors in many science disciplines. The IMU data can be used for an algorithmic detection of different postures and movements, which may support more detailed assessments of complex behaviors, such as daily activities. Studies on human behavior in real-life environments need to strike a balance between simplifying the recording settings and preserving sufficient analytic gains. It is poorly understood, however, what the trade-offs are between alternative recording configurations and the attainable an

Emergency Monitoring Following A Diagnosis of Anaphylaxis.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: In this review we explore expanding options for monitoring following anaphylaxis in the home or community setting. We review recent literature to help identify who might benefit from watchful waiting at home versus immediate emergency medical service (EMS) activation following anaphylaxis. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies confirm that most patients respond promptly, completely, with a durable response to a single dose of epinephrine for anaphylaxis. In monophasic anaphylaxis, reflexive emergency monitoring has been found to have minimal benefit. In recent years, studies

[Cough frequency monitoring: current technologies and clinical research applications].

Cough is a common symptom of many respiratory diseases, and parameters such as frequency, intensity, type and duration play important roles in disease screening, diagnosis and prognosis. Among these, cough frequency is the most widely applied metric. In current clinical practice, cough severity is primarily assessed based on patients' subjective symptom descriptions in combination with semi-structured questionnaires. In spite of convenience, this paradigm is inherently limited by recall bias and poor quantifiability. This results in only moderate correlation with objective cough assessments. O

Methods of Monitoring Intracranial Pressure: A Review.

Monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) is important in a variety of neurologic conditions, including aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury. Monitoring and controlling ICP can mitigate secondary injury of the brain. Of the invasive methods of monitoring ICP, the external ventricular drain is still considered the gold standard. However, microtransducers have been shown to be a reliable option with significantly lower risks of complications. Due to their reproducibility, and their limitations, they are not ready to replace invasive ICP monitoring techniques. This article r

Clinical utility of quantitative pupillometric monitoring in patients with acute brain injury.

Assessment of the pupillary reflex to light is essential in patients with acute brain injury, as pupillary abnormalities are associated with neurological impairment and elevated intracranial pressure. Manual assessment by headlamp is inaccurate, whereas quantitative pupillometry provides objective and accurate measurements of pupillary size and reactivity, anticipating severe neurological deterioration and allowing early intervention in life-threatening situations. The pupillary neurological index, a variable derived from automated pupillometry, correlates with intracranial pressure, allows mo

Implementation of Vital Signs Detection Algorithm for Supervising the Evacuation of Individuals with Special Needs.

The article describes a system for monitoring the vital parameters of evacuated individuals, integrating three key functionalities: pulse detection, verification of wristband contact with the skin, and motion recognition. For pulse detection, the system employs the MAX30102 optical sensor and a signal processing algorithm presented in the study. The algorithm is based on spectral analysis using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and incorporates a nonparametric estimator of the probability density function (PDF) in the form of Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). This developed real-time algorithm e

Current Practices in Monitoring Children and Adults With X-linked Hypophosphatemia: A Global Survey of Expert Experience.

This report provides recommendations for X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) monitoring based on current monitoring practices of experts in the management of XLH in children (<18 years) and adults. We surveyed 43 international experts in XLH to determine their monitoring practices for children and adults with XLH, including pregnant and lactating women. In the initial evaluation of children and adults with XLH, experts consistently obtain a family history of XLH or hypophosphatemia, a history of fractures and dental infections, and assess pain through age-appropriate clinical interviews or caregiv

Unobtrusive Skin Temperature Estimation on a Smart Bed.

The transition from wakefulness to sleep occurs when the core body temperature decreases. The latter is facilitated by an increase in the cutaneous blood flow, which dissipates internal heat into the micro-environment surrounding the sleeper's body. The rise in cutaneous blood flow near sleep onset causes the distal (hands and feet) and proximal (abdomen) temperatures to increase by about 1 °C and 0.5 °C, respectively. Characterizing the dynamics of skin temperature changes throughout sleep phases and understanding its relationship with sleep quality requires a means to unobtrusively and longi

Novel Method for Detecting Coughing Pigs with Audio-Visual Multimodality for Smart Agriculture Monitoring.

While the pig industry is crucial in global meat consumption, accounting for 34% of total consumption, respiratory diseases in pigs can cause substantial economic losses to pig farms. To alleviate this issue, we propose an advanced audio-visual monitoring system for the early detection of coughing, a key symptom of respiratory diseases in pigs, that will enhance disease management and animal welfare. The proposed system is structured into three key modules: the cough sound detection (CSD) module, which detects coughing sounds using audio data; the pig object detection (POD) module, which ident

One-Dimensional Flexible Capacitive Sensor with Large Strain and High Stability for Human Motion Monitoring.

Flexible capacitive sensors have attracted the attention of researchers owing to their simple structure, ease of realization, and wearability. Currently, flexible capacitive sensors mainly have three-dimensional and two-dimensional structures, which are subject to several limitations in their applications. A low-cost, high-efficiency, and continuously processable process was used to wrap nylon DTY (PA) filaments on the surface of silver-coated nylon (SCN) core yarns and impregnate them with waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to obtain SCN/PA/WPU composite yarns, which were then utilized in the desi

The Next Frontier of Remote Patient Monitoring: Hospital at Home.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) has shown promise in aiding safe and efficient remote care for chronic conditions; however, its use remains more limited within the hospital at home (HaH) model of care despite a significant opportunity to increase patient eligibility, improve safety, and decrease costs. HaH could achieve these goals by further adopting the 3 primary modalities of RPM (ie, vital sign, continuous single-lead electrocardiogram, and fall monitoring). With only 2 in-person vital sign checks required per day, HaH patient eligibility is currently often limited to lower-acuity cases. T

Mechanically Active Materials and Devices for Bio-Interfaced Pressure Sensors-A Review.

Pressures generated by external forces or by internal body processes represent parameters of critical importance in diagnosing physiological health and in anticipating injuries. Examples span intracranial hypertension from traumatic brain injuries, high blood pressure from poor diet, pressure-induced skin ulcers from immobility, and edema from congestive heart failure. Pressures measured on the soft surfaces of vital organs or within internal cavities of the body can provide essential insights into patient status and progression. Challenges lie in the development of high-performance pressure s

Non-Invasive Intracranial Pressure Monitoring and Its Applicability in Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Neuro-ophthalmic findings collectively defined as Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) are one of the leading health priorities in astronauts engaging in long duration spaceflight or prolonged microgravity exposure. Though multifactorial in etiology, similarities to terrestrial idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) suggest these changes may result from an increase or impairing in intracranial pressure (ICP). Finding a portable, accessible, and reliable method of monitoring ICP is, therefore, crucial in long duration spaceflight. A review of recent literature w
