Effects of Intermittent Sequential Pneumatic Compression on Functional, Biochemical, and Perceptual Recovery Markers in Trained Cyclists: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Crossover Trial.

PURPOSE: Intermittent Sequential Pneumatic Compression (ISPC) has gained popularity as a recovery modality among athletes, yet its effectiveness in high-performance cycling settings remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 30-minute high-pressure ISPC intervention, in comparison with a sham condition, on the recovery of high-level road cyclists following a 30-minute all-out time trial on a stationary trainer. METHODS: Twenty-one male participants (age: 22.8 [4.8] y) were included in this crossover trial, with their recovery protocol sequence randomly assigned. Meas

Effects of acteoside from Cistanche tubulosa on the plasma metabolome of cancer-related fatigue mice inoculated with colon cancer cells.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the metabolic mechanisms by which acteoside (ACT) isolated from Cistanche tubulosa alleviates cancer-related fatigue … reasing alongside tumor growth. Administration of ACT ameliorated both tumor burden and PTX-induced muscle fatigue-like behavior. LC/MS analysis identified a panel of differentially regulated metabolites, including trans-aconitine, citric acid, 3-coumaric acid, ephedrine, thymine, cytosine, indole-3-acetic acid, and pantothenol-9. These metabolites were primaril …

Anti-Fatigue Properties of Cultivated Wild Ginseng Distilled Extract and Its Active Component Panaxydol in Rats.

OBJECTIVES: Cultivated wild ginseng (cWG), called SanYangSanSam, has been used clinically in patients with chronic fatigue in Korea. Little is known about effects of the ginseng distilled (volatile) components produced during evaporizaiton. Recently, we first identified one major component from cWG distilled extract, panaxydol, by using mass spectrometry. However, functional properties of cWG distilled extract and panaxydol remains elusive. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effect of cWG distilled extract or panaxydol on exercise-induced fatigue in rats. METHODS: Fatigue was induced

Aggravation of fatigue by steroid therapy in terminally ill patients with cancer.

Steroids are commonly used for fatigue relief in terminally ill cancer patients. However, steroid-induced adverse effects including depression, myopathy, and hyperglycemia may contribute to fatigue. We report our experiences with aggravation of fatigue with steroid use in three cases. Case 1 was a 65-year-old man with advanced gastric cancer. He was started on betamethasone (2 mg/d) for fatigue, but the fatigue worsened due to steroid-induced depression. Discontinuation of steroids and initiation of an antidepressant ameliorated the fatigue. Case 2 was a 68-year-old man with advanced lung canc

Gabapentin-induced rhabdomyolysis in a patient with diabetic neuropathy.

Gabapentin (GBP) is a drug which is frequently used in diabetic neuropathy. Common adverse effects of GBP include drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, somnolence, and fatigue. Rhabdomyolysis is an extremely rare side effect of GBP. In this report we describe a case of GBP-induced rhabdomyolysis in a 63-year-old diabetic woman. She presented with severe muscle pain in her extremities, fatigue, decreased urine output and urine discoloration within 3 weeks after starting treatment with GBP (900 mg/day) for diabetic neuropathy. Laboratory tests revealed extreme elevations of muscle enzymes, increased cr

Evolution of Physiological Responses and Fatigue Analysis in Padel Matches According to Match Outcome and Playing Position.

Padel is a doubles racket sport played on an enclosed court, characterised by intermittent high-intensity efforts, frequent directional changes, and short recovery periods. This study aimed to analyse the evolution of physiological responses and neuromuscular fatigue in amateur padel players according to playing position (Right Side [RS] vs. Left Side [LS]) and match outcome (Win or Lose). A total of 52 padel players (35.6 ± 11.6 years) participated, competing in 13 matches. The mean match duration was 57.2 ± 15.7 min, with an average of 152.0 ± 40.4 points per match. Physiological variables w

Differential effects of sex on upper body kinematics and kinetics during fatiguing, Asymmetric lifting.

This study quantified sex-specific biomechanical adaptations to fatigue in asymmetric lifting. Twenty-one females and fifteen males performed a prolonged asymmetric lifting protocol while upper body, trunk and pelvis kinematics were collected. Features of movement identified with principal component analysis, and peak joint angular velocities and moments were calculated. Sex-specific kinematic adaptations to fatigue included females adopting a 'stoop-like' lifting strategy to a greater extent than males. Additionally, females exhibited higher vertical elbow positions during load rotation, move

Systematic underestimation of human hand weight.

According to Newton's laws, the weight of a body part is equal to its mass times gravitational acceleration. Our experience of body part weight, however, is constructed by the central nervous system. No sensory receptors directly specify the weight of body parts, and the factors influencing perceived weight remain unknown. The perceived weight of held objects has been linked to sensations of the magnitude of central motor commands sent to the muscles, what Helmholtz called the effort of will and has subsequently been called the sense of effort1. The link between the sense of effort and the per

Electromyography and fatigue during prolonged, low-level static contractions.

Findings from five separate studies of EMG changes and muscle fatigue during prolonged low-level static contractions are summarized, and the possible mechanisms behind the changes are briefly discussed. Sustained static contractions (10%, 7% and 5% MVC) of up to 1 h duration were performed by finger flexors, elbow flexors and extensors, and knee extensors. In one experiment, intermittent static arm pulling (triceps) (10 s contraction and 5 s rest, average work load 14% and 10% MVC) was performed for 7 h. The endurance time for the sustained contractions was around one hour for 10% MVC, and it …

Potential of a New, Flexible Electrode sEMG System in Detecting Electromyographic Activation in Low Back Muscles during Clinical Tests: A Pilot Study on Wearables for Pain Management.

BACKGROUND: While low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, its clinical objective assessment is currently limited. Part of this syndrome arises from the abnormal sensorimotor control of back muscles, involving increased muscle fatigability (i.e., assessed with the Biering-Sorensen test) and abnormal muscle activation patterns (i.e., the flexion-extension test). Surface electromyography (sEMG) provides objective measures of muscle fatigue development (median frequency drop, MDF) and activation patterns (RMS amplitude change). This study therefore assessed the sensitivit…

Dual Roles of Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Fatigability in the Life-Space Mobility of Older Adults: The Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA).

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness and perceived fatigability are interrelated components of physical capacity that may jointly influence movement within one's living environment (life-space mobility). We examined whether fitness and fatigability were associated with life-space mobility in community-dwelling older adults, and whether the association of fitness with life-space varied by the level of perceived fatigability. METHODS: Participants were from the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA) baseline cohort (N = 775, mean age 76.1 years). Life Space Assessment scores incorporated

The effect of diaphragm fatigue on the multidimensional components of dyspnoea and diaphragm electromyography during exercise in healthy males.

KEY POINTS: Diaphragm fatigue may increase the intensity (sensory dimension) and unpleasantness (affective dimension) of dyspnoea, which may partially explain why diaphragm fatigue negatively affects exercise performance. We hypothesized that diaphragm fatigue would negatively affect exercise performance via increases in both the intensity and unpleasantness of dyspnoea, and that the increase in dyspnoea would be mechanistically linked to an increase in diaphragmatic EMG (EMGdi ), a surrogate measure of neural respiratory drive. Fatiguing the diaphragm prior to exercise reduced cycling perform
