BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis exposes infants to both acute burdens (e.g., hospitalization in cases of severe bronchiolitis) and increased risks for chronic respiratory sequelae (e.g., asthma). In severe bronchiolitis, recent evidence suggests distinct pathobiological roles of microbiota (e.g., viruses, bacteria) and host responses influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors. However, the relationship of airway microbiota with host DNA methylation (DNAm) in infants with severe bronchiolitis remains unknown.
METHODS: In a multi-center prospective cohort of 504 multi-ethnic infants with severe bro

The primary nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (NPPA) is extremely rare which accounts for less than 0.48% of all malignant neoplasms in the nasopharynx. The clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of NPPA have not been well described. We present 2 patients with NPPA that were treated with total endoscopic resection and radiotherapy at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital. Through these cases and reviewing of the literature, we provide deeper understanding of NPPA to highlight clinical pathological characteristics and the optimal treatment strategy for patients with pathologically confirm

INTRODUCTION: Managing uncommon metastatic sites from different solid tumors is challenging since no available guidelines define the best therapeutic approaches for these rare clinical events. Thus, malignancies giving rise to distant metastases involving infrequent anatomical regions are often associated with a poor prognosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 75-year-old man who developed uncontrolled epistaxis following the detection of a metachronous nasopharyngeal metastasis from a previous lung adenocarcinoma. The lesion was identified with a computed tomography scan and its o

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely rare malignancy arising from follicular dendritic cells accounting for less than 0.4% of all soft tissue sarcomas. While it can manifest in various anatomical locations, its occurrence in the nasopharynx is particularly uncommon with only 10 reported cases in the English literature. This case report describes a 45-year-old woman who complained of persistent neck swelling, nasal obstruction, and left ear fullness. Imaging showed a nasopharyngeal process and cervical lymphadenopathy. Biopsies confirmed FDCS. Treatment included chemotherapy

Post-radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) is a rare but life-threatening condition that often poses a diagnostic challenge in imaging studies owing to its overlapping features with recurrent nasopharyngeal tumours. We herein describe the characteristic imaging appearance of PRNN on post-contrast T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET/CT which may provide insights into its pathological findings.

Low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (LGNPPA) is a rare neoplasm originating from the surface mucosal epithelium in the nasopharynx. To clarify its clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features, we retrospectively enrolled 35 patients diagnosed with LGNPPA between May 2016 and March 2024. Our cohort consisted of 14 male and 21 female patients aged 11 to 71 years (median: 37 y). The most common symptoms were rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction. Most tumors originated from the roof of the nasopharynx and were clinically staged as T1N0M0. None of the patients had a hist

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to affect head and neck sites beyond the oropharynx, including the nasopharynx. Unlike HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC), HPV-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (HPV+NPC) is not well characterized and the true prevalence in non-endemic regions is poorly described. Here, we sought to obtain a global point prevalence of HPV in NPC, stratified by geographic region.

Currently, the reference method for identifying the presence of variants of SARS-CoV-2 is whole genome sequencing. Although it is less expensive than in the past, it is still time-consuming, and interpreting the results is difficult, requiring staff with specific skills who are not always available in diagnostic laboratories. The test presented in this study aimed to detect, using traditional real-time PCR, the presence of the main variants described for the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. The primers and probes were designed to detect the main deletions that characterize the different

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) has a unique histopathology compared with other head and neck cancers. Individual NPC patients may attain different outcomes. This study aims to build a prognostic system by combining a highly accurate machine learning model (ML) model with explainable artificial intelligence to stratify NPC patients into low and high chance of survival groups. Explainability is provided using Local Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanations (LIME) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) techniques. A total of 1094 NPC patients were retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and

BACKGROUND: Population screening of asymptomatic persons with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA or antibodies has improved the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and survival among affected persons. However, the positive predictive value of current screening strategies is unsatisfactory even in areas where nasopharyngeal carcinoma is endemic.
METHODS: We designed a peptide library representing highly ranked B-cell epitopes of EBV coding sequences to identify novel serologic biomarkers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. After a retrospective case-control study, the performance of the novel biomarker

BACKGROUND Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor that involves the salivary glands and is rarely seen in the nasopharynx. It is characterized by pain, a high rate of recurrence, and poor survival rate and poor prognosis as it tends to invade the perineurium. Due to the ambiguity of patient presentations, most patients present at a late stage, at which point metastasis has already occurred. CASE REPORT The patient in this case report was an otherwise healthy 56-year-old male smoker who presented to the clinic in March 2022 complaining of nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, recurre

Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is rare and associated with a poor prognosis. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been the standard first-line treatment for metastatic NPC, but their effect on meningeal metastasis of NPC needs further investigation. A 38-year-old man complained of bilateral neck masses and sought medical care. He was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal undifferentiated non-keratinizing carcinoma with bilateral cervical lymph node metastasis and multiple bone metastasis, stage cT4N2M1 IVb. Then, the patient received first-line anti-PD-1 antibody

Dynamic nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC) is an obstructive upper airway disease that affects mainly the inspiratory phase of respiration in horses undergoing strenuous exercise. It occurs when the neuromuscular activity of the nasopharynx is overwhelmed by the intense negative pressures generated during exercise. This leads to collapse of at least one of the four components of the nasopharynx which is comprised of the two lateral walls, the dorsal roof and the ventral soft palate. As a result, the airway diameter and thus airflow become compromised. Even small changes in the airway diameter produ

BACKGROUND: Recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains a major challenge for clinicians and scientists. Tumor organoid is a revelational disease model that highly resembled the heterogeneity and histopathological characteristics of original tumors. This study aimed to optimize the modeling process of patient-derived NPC organoids (NPCOs), and establish a living-biobank of NPCs to study the mechanism and explore the more effective treatment of the disease.
METHODS: Sixty-two fresh NPC tissue samples and 15 normal mucosa samples were collected for 3-dimensional (3D) organoid culture. The
