Unmet educational accommodation needs and mental health outcomes in adults with disabilities: A machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: No research has yet determined exactly what accommodation needs are unmet for disabled students and how those needs being unmet predict psychosocial outcomes many years later. OBJECTIVE: To address this research gap, we seek to explore the potentially long-term associations of unmet educational accommodation needs and demographic characteristics with the mental health of adults with disabilities (n = 409). METHODS: To explore these associations, we use modern the machine learning technique of Random Forest feature importance. RESULTS: While 52.3 % of the sample reported having h

Actual needs of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a qualitative study from Wuhan, China.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that significantly impacts individuals and families. Previous research on ALS has predominantly focused on its pathophysiology, genetic factors, and potential therapeutic interventions. While these aspects are essential for understanding and treating the disease, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of studying patients' actual needs. Understanding these needs is vital for developing patient-centered care models that can enhance the well-being of ALS patients. However, existi

Identifying households with children who have complex needs: a segmentation model for integrated care systems.

BACKGROUND: Adversity in childhood is increasing in the United Kingdom. Complex health and social problems affecting children cluster in families where adults also have high need, but services are rarely aligned to support the whole family. Household level segmentation can help identify households most needing integrated support. Thus, the aim was to develop a segmentation model to identify those households with children who have high levels of complex cross-sectoral needs, to use as a case-finding tool for health and social care services, and to describe characteristics of identified househol

Unmet needs of ambulatory cancer patients undergoing cancer treatments in a Portuguese hospital: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer experience a variety of needs at every stage of their illness. Many of these needs can be addressed with palliative care. Cancer patients' palliative needs should therefore be proactively identified and managed. This study aimed to identify the needs of oncology patients receiving out-patient cancer treatment at a Portuguese cancer center. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken of consecutive patients presenting to an outpatient cancer clinic over the course of 5 days for cancer treatments. The primary outcome measure was the validated Portuguese vers

The impact of childhood sexual and physical abuse on needs for care among people with first episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood physical and sexual abuse are highly prevalent among individuals with psychotic disorders. These individuals also tend to have poor global and social functioning outcomes. At symptom remission, adequate functioning is restored in only one out of seven patients, and if childhood abuse is present, psychosocial and occupational functioning are more compromised. Lower psychosocial functioning is found to be associated with higher levels of needs for care. This longitudinal study examines how physical and sexual abuse affect the total, met, and unmet needs for care of patients

The Complex Relationship Between Social and Functional Needs in Frail Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in integrating social and function-focused care into health care settings. Little is known about what older adults perceive as the needs that impact their lives, and the resources to address patients' social and functional needs often exist outside of traditional health care settings. METHODS: Our objective was to understand frail older adults' and community organizations' perspectives on what social and functional needs impact older adults' health, the support they receive, and how organizations and health systems could partner to address these n

Why and where an HIV cure is needed and how it might be achieved.

Despite considerable global investment, only 60% of people who live with HIV currently receive antiretroviral therapy. The sustainability of current programmes remains unknown and key incidence rates are declining only modestly. Given the complexities and expenses associated with lifelong medication, developing an effective curative intervention is now a global priority. Here we review why and where a cure is needed, and how it might be achieved. We argue for expanding these efforts from resource-rich regions to sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere: for any intervention to have an effect, region-s

Understanding care and outcomes in adolescents and young adult with Cancer: A review of the AYA HOPE study.

Historically, adolescents and young adults (AYA) diagnosed with cancer have been an understudied population, and their unique care experiences, needs, and outcomes were not well understood. Thus, 10 years ago, the National Cancer Institute supported the fielding of the Adolescent and Young Adult Health Outcomes and Patient Experiences (AYA HOPE) study to address this gap. We recruited individuals diagnosed at ages 15 to 39 with germ cell, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and sarcoma from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registries into the first

Information needs of patients with meningiomas.

The aim of this descriptive, cross-sectional study was to determine information requirements of patients with typical meningiomas after surgery. The study sample consisted of 20 patients who underwent surgery for brain tumours in neurosurgery clinics of a university hospital. Permission to conduct research was obtained from all patients and from the hospital. Before the surgery, a booklet was given to patients for training. Patients were followed up one, three, six and 12 months later by the phone after the surgery and asked to report their problems. All questions were recorded and answered. D

Personalized Lifespan Approach to Autism Assessment: A Clinical and System Framework for Developmentally Informed Assessment Across the Life-Course.

The increasing prevalence of autism has led to considerable system challenges as specialist-driven approaches have struggled to keep pace. Recent research has challenged status quo models by demonstrating that community-based pediatric clinicians can accurately diagnose autism in young children. This research provides an opportunity to further expand capacity of community systems to conduct developmentally relevant, context-specific assessments of autistic people over their lifespan. In this Commentary, we propose a personalized lifespan approach to autism assessment as a precision care and sy

Exploring the unmet needs of older people living with lung cancer: a qualitative study.

UNLABELLED: Research into unmet needs in older populations with cancer is crucial, as existing studies often overlook these groups and fail to capture their unique experiences. Addressing these gaps is essential to improve quality of life and reduce psychological distress, particularly in those diagnosed with lung cancer, who face a higher burden of unmet needs than other cancer diagnoses. AIM: To explore the needs of older people with lung cancer and their perceptions and experiences of healthcare, social support and daily living in one of Australia's most culturally diverse communities. [Palliative care needs and healthcare provision for patients on the lung transplantation waiting list].

BACKGROUND: For patients with advanced lung diseases, lung transplantation may represent the ultimate therapeutic option. Although support by palliative care is recommended for these highly vulnerable patients, it is rarely established in clinical practice. The present study aims to comprehensively describe the characteristics and health care of patients on the lung transplant waiting list, as well as to identify indicators for palliative care needs and risk factors for death during the waiting period. METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of patients waiting for a lung transplantation of th

Dementia family carers' needs and wants for technological solutions to their work-care reconciliation challenges: semi-structured interviews.

Most people with dementia who live in the community are cared for by family, friends, or neighbors. Many of these unpaid dementia carers have to balance caring with paid work, which can present them with several challenges. Technology can offer potential solutions, independent of an already strained social care system. This qualitative study aimed to explore working dementia carers' needs and wants regarding technological solutions for their work-care reconciliation challenges. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 (10 women, 6 men) working carers of community-dwelling people with de

Communication information needs of family members experiencing aphasia: a qualitative phenomenological exploration.

PURPOSE: Aphasia information provision to family members (FMs) is often lacking or delayed, prolonging adjustment and management of the severe consequences of aphasia. We explored FMs' response to the communication changes when a family member acquires aphasia (PwA) in Türkiye. Specifically, we explored their experiences of navigating the healthcare system in Türkiye, aphasia information provision and communicating with PwA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Online semi-structured interviews with FMs (n = 12) were conducted. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The findings rev

Patterns and Disparities in Met Needs in Community Mental Health Services: Exploring the Utility of the Ontario Modified Met Needs Index.

Assessing client needs is integral to improving outcomes in community mental health services, yet tools to evaluate the extent to which needs are met remain underutilized. This study examines patterns of met needs and disparities across sociodemographic groups using the Ontario Common Assessment of Need (OCAN), a standardized tool adapted from the Camberwell Assessment of Need (CAN) and widely implemented in Ontario, Canada. Specifically, we applied the Ontario Modified Met Needs Index (OMMNI), a ratio-based metric, to measure the extent to which identified needs were addressed over the course
