Use of antihypertensive drugs and risk of keratinocyte carcinoma: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

PURPOSE: Current epidemiologic evidence on the association between antihypertensive drugs and keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) risk is inconsistent. We sought to quantify this association by meta-analysis of observational studies. METHODS: We systematically reviewed observational studies published through August 2016 and reported the KC risk (basal cell carcinoma [BCC] and squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]) associated with antihypertensive drugs, including diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-adrenergic blocking agents (β-blockers), and

Basal cell carcinoma arising from epidermal cyst.

Vasospastic disorders affecting the lower extremities are unusual entities. Two cases of asymptomatic foot discoloration with lower extremity dependency are presented. In the first case, an elderly gentleman was admitted to the hospital with a contralateral foot infection. His physical exam revealed pulse examination within normal limits and his blood work failed to identify any known causes for vasospasm. His foot infection was successfully treated with sensitivity-directed antibiotics. The second case is that of a young man with a history of quadriplegia secondary to a remote diving accident

Dermatologic conditions in skin of color: part I. Special considerations for common skin disorders.

Skin of color traditionally refers to that of persons of African, Asian, Native American, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic backgrounds. Differences in cutaneous structure and function can result in skin conditions with distinct presentations and varying prevalence that require unique treatment. Skin cancers have different presentations in these populations. The ability to recognize and diagnose skin cancer in a timely manner is important for reducing morbidity and mortality. Basal cell carcinoma often is pigmented, squamous cell carcinoma occurs in areas of chronic scarring and inflammation, and m

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma with squamous differentiation: report of a case with response of cutaneous metastases to electrochemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic basal cell carcinoma is a rare disease with poor prognosis. Palliative therapeutic approaches include surgery, radiotherapy, and/or chemotherapy. These treatment modalities are invasive and risky and associated with relevant adverse effects. Electrochemotherapy is a recently described therapy that relies on the permeation of cancer cell membranes by electrical pulses to enhance cytotoxic drug penetration. It has been successfully used in the treatment of primary and metastatic skin cancers. We report a case of metastatic basal cell carcinoma in which electrochemotherapy

Metallothionein immunolocalization in actinic skin nonmelanoma carcinomas.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most frequent skin cancer. Its pathogeny is linked to genotoxic effects of actinic radiation exposure, especially to ultraviolet wavelength. Metallothionein (MT) is a low-molecular weight protein with high affinity for heavy metal. Its intracellular function has been related to heavy metals and free-radical detoxification, although many studies linked MT to protective action against actinic mutagenesis. In other way, overexpression in malignant tumors has been related to worse prognosis. We aimed to evaluate MT immunohistoche

[Patched/Sonic Hedgehog pathway and basal cell carcinoma].

The recent discovery of the role of the Patched Sonic Hedgehog pathway in the physiopathogeny of BCC (basocellular carcinoma) and Gorlin's syndrome has greatly improved our knowledge on the mechanism of development of these tumors. For the first time, murine models have been developed allowing to further understand other molecular events implicated in such tumors as well as providing in vivo models to search for new curative or preventive therapeutical strategies which would be helpful to control CBC multiple forms, that are often disabling.

Malignant primary skin tumors in children.

Primary malignancies of the skin are uncommon in childhood. A low index of suspicion may lead to a delay in diagnosis. This paper reviews the most common pediatric primary skin tumors: melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma. Because almost all skin cancers in children occur in the setting of a predisposing condition, identifying children at greatest risk is crucial to their management. Important precursor lesions and syndromes are stressed.

Techniques of cutaneous examination for the detection of skin cancer.

Skin cancers are the most common cancers in humans. The American Cancer Society estimates that in the United States more than 700,000 new skin cancers are diagnosed annually. Although the majority of nonmelanoma skin cancers occur on visibly exposed anatomic areas, most malignant melanomas occur on body sites obscured by clothing. The high mortality associated with advanced melanomas emphasizes the importance of performing regular total cutaneous examinations in all patients to detect early, easily curable lesions. A number of techniques aid in these examinations: (1) physical and psychologic

Cryosurgery for benign and malignant skin lesions: treatment with a new instrument.

The Foster "Froster" unit is a new and simplified liquid nitrogen system for use in dermatologic cryosurgery. The details of its operation are described and its use in various benign, premalignant, and malignant lesions is discussed. In malignant lesions, not only type, but frequently location, is important when deciding whether to use cryosurgery as the first, alternate, or adjunctive choice of therapy. Benign and premalignant lesions which respond best are sebaceous hyperplasia, dermatofibromas, actinic keratoses, leukoplakias, lentigines, and certain seborrheic keratoses and verrucae. Initi

CaN19 expression in benign and malignant hyperplasias of the skin and oral mucosa: evidence for a role in regenerative differentiation.

CaN19, a member of the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins, is known to be "underexpressed" in cultured breast carcinoma-derived cell lines relative to their normal counterparts. By Northern blotting, we confirm these results and find that CaN19 is also markedly "underexpressed" in several carcinoma-derived cell lines of the skin, oral mucosa, and urogenital tract. However, exceptions to the inverse correlation between CaN19 expression and malignancy have been identified, bringing into question the hypothesis that CaN19 functions as a tumor suppressor gene. Unexpectedly, CaN19 mRNA was str

Pituicytoma with unusual histological features.

Pituicytoma is a rare low-grade glial neoplasm that originates in the neurohypophysis or infundibulum. Because of its rare occurrence, the morphology and differentiation of pituicytoma have not been fully clarified. Here, we report a case of pituicytoma with unusual histological features mimicking ependymoma, but exhibiting the diverse morphology and differentiation of pituicytoma. The 1.4 cm-sized suprasellar mass was incidentally found in the magnetic resonance image of a 42-year-old Korean woman who had had a traffic accident. Four years later, she presented with symptoms of hypopituitarism

Differential expression of tetraspanin CD9 in basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin and actinic keratosis.

Tetraspanins are potentially useful molecular markers that differentiate between tumour classes and subtypes, since members of this protein family were often found to be altered during malignant conversion and tumour progression. In this study, we analysed expression of the tetraspanin CD9 in the frequent cutaneous neoplasms basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and actinic keratosis (AK), which is considered a precursor lesion (carcinoma in situ) from which an invasive SCC can develop. A moderate to strong CD9-specific staining of the tumour cells' plasma membranes was uni

"Adenoid cystic" carcinoma and adenoid basal carcinoma of the uterine cervix. A study of 28 cases.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of the uterine cervix are rare tumors that have often been regarded as a single entity. We studied 28 cases of these neoplasms, with 14 cases in each category. Most patients were over 60 years of age, and there was a high proportion of black women. The majority of the women with ACC presented with postmenopausal bleeding and had an obvious mass on pelvic examination. Despite the tumors' architectural similarity to ACC of the salivary gland, microscopic examination of the cervical carcinomas showed necrosis, a high mitotic rate, a

Case Report: Optimum excision with split skin graft closure in the management of penile sebaceous carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare malignant skin neoplasm derived from the meibomian gland of adnexal epithelium, which is frequently confused with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), exhibiting sebaceous differentiation and commonly found in the head and neck regions. We report a case of penile sebaceous carcinoma, an extremely rare anatomical site for SC. A 68-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of painless, non-healing ulcerated nodules over the left side of the penile shaft. Wedge biopsy showed adenocarcinoma with signet ring differentiation. We proceeded with wide local excision (WLE)

[The odontogenic keratocyst--odontogenic cyst or benign tumor?].

The odontogenic keratocyst is the third most common cyst of the jaws, after the follicular and radicular cyst. Keratocysts most commonly occur as single lesions in the jaw of otherwise healthy persons. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts are a well-recognized feature of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. The mandible, especially the third molar region, the angle of the mandible and the ascending ramus are involved far more frequently than the maxilla. Clinically, the cysts often remain asymptomatic and there are two specific histological entities: the orthokeratinized and the parakeratiniz

Subtotal Exenteration of the Orbit for Benign Orbital Disease.

PURPOSE: Total exenteration of the orbit with removal of the eye globe and surrounding tissues is most frequently indicated for malignant tumors. The indications for exenteration of the orbit for benign orbital lesion are rare. Not adequately treated infection of the orbit by systemic antibiotics can lead to destructive changes of soft tissues in the region of the orbit and partial exenteration with eyelid sparing technique is necessary. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Data of all patients between 2010 and 2018 who underwent exenteration of the orbit for periocular lesions infilt

Using Local Flaps to Reconstruct Mohs Defects of the Forehead.

Reconstruction of forehead defects presents a unique challenge due to the forehead's high visibility, limited tissue laxity, and proximity to critical structures. Knowledge of the pertinent anatomy, including tissue planes and neurovascular structures, enables the effective use of reconstructive techniques to achieve optimal aesthetic and functional results. Mastering principles of local flap reconstruction with the use of advancement, rotation, and transposition flaps are the keys to maximizing tissue mobility and ensuring tension-free closures, while preserving facial landmarks. Additionally
