Increasing the Size of the Microbial Biomass Altered Bacterial Community Structure which Enhances Plant Phosphorus Uptake.

Agricultural production can be limited by low phosphorus (P) availability, with soil P being constrained by sorption and precipitation reactions making it less available for plant uptake. There are strong links between carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability and P cycling within soil P pools, with microorganisms being an integral component of soil P cycling mediating the availability of P to plants. Here we tested a conceptual model that proposes (i) the addition of readily-available organic substrates would increase the size of the microbial biomass thus exhausting the pool of easily-availab

Genetics first or metabolism first? The formamide clue.

Life is made of the intimate interaction of metabolism and genetics, both built around the chemistry of the most common elements of the Universe (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon). The transmissible interaction of metabolic and genetic cycles results in the hypercycles of organization and de-organization of chemical information, of living and non-living. The origin-of-life quest has long been split into several attitudes exemplified by the aphorisms "genetics-first" or "metabolism-first". Recently, the opposition between these approaches has been solved by more unitary theoretical and ex

Successful artificial insemination in the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) using chilled and frozen-thawed semen.

BACKGROUND: Artificial insemination (AI) using frozen-thawed semen is well established and routinely used for breeding in various mammalian species. However, there is no report of the birth of elephant calves following AI with frozen-thawed semen. The objective of the present study was to investigate the fertilizing ability of chilled and frozen-thawed semen in the Asian elephant following artificial insemination (AI). METHODS: Semen samples were collected by from 8 bulls (age range, 12-to 42-years) by manual stimulation. Semen with high quality were either cooled to 4 degrees C or frozen in

Upcycling factory potato peel into a hierarchically porous carbon for dye removal, phytotoxicity mitigation, and wastewater remediation.

Potato peel from chip factories, a centralized, continuously generated agro-industrial waste stream, is valorized here into a nitrogen-enriched, hierarchically porous activated carbon (PMC) through melamine-assisted N-doping and KOH activation. Unlike laboratory-scale biomass studies relying on inconsistent feedstocks, this work leverages factory-scale peel sourcing to improve feedstock consistency and industrial relevance. The engineered carbon exhibits a micro-mesoporous architecture (BET surface area = 284.3 m2 g-1) facilitates molecular accessibility, together with a highly super-hydrophil

Genetic regulation of biosynthesis and resistance to redox-active phenazines in Burkholderia spp.

Burkholderia includes gram-negative saprophytes, nitrogen-fixers, and species associated with nosocomial infections. Numerous strains in the Burkholderia cepacia, Burkholderia pseudomallei, Burkholderia glumae, and Burkholderia gladioli clades carry genes for phenazine (Phz) biosynthesis. Phenazines are a large class of colored, structurally diverse microbial secondary compounds with a common nitrogen-containing tricyclic core. They act as molecular signals and extracellular electron shuttles, contributing to the competitiveness of producer organisms in their natural habitats. Phenazines also

Co-inoculation of Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum mitigates the deleterious effects of waterlogging in soybean plants in a scenario of enhanced atmospheric CO2.

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations directly influence photosynthesis and productivity in C3 plants, contributing to global warming and altering hydrological cycles, which in turn increase extreme rainfall events. Soybean, a waterlogging-sensitive crop, exhibits marked yield reductions under such conditions. Legumes establish symbioses with diazotrophic bacteria and are increasingly co-inoculated with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) to enhance stress resilience. While elevated CO2 (e[CO2]) and PGPB generally stimulate photosynthesis and growth, waterlogging often counteracts these ben

Ferrous wheel hypothesis II: Abiotic incorporation of mineral nitrogen into organic pools in volcanic soils of temperate forest ecosystems.

Understanding the pathways of nitrogen (N) retention in pristine forest soils is essential for effective ecosystem management and nutrient conservation. The incorporation of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) into organic N in soils without microbiological contribution remains a very intriguing question. This study explores the abiotic incorporation of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) into organic N of volcanic soil under sterilized and anoxic conditions, providing insights into mineral N losses occurring as dissolved organic N (DON) rather than the commonly accepted nitrate leaching. We evalu

Sources and mineralization determine the generation and transformation pathway of sedimentary organic matter over the past century.

Sedimentary organic matter (SOM), an organic mixture of complex compositions with diverse structures, plays a crucial role in lake carbon cycling. The quantity, sources, compositions and biogeochemical behaviors of SOM typically vary with lake ecosystem evolution and mineralization process. However, the dynamic response and transformation pathway of SOM during these joint processes remain incompletely understood, particularly in time dimension. Geochronology, total organic carbon (TOC), nutrients and SOM sources in a sediment core from Erhai Lake were determined using radionuclides, geochemica

Enhanced synergistic system for the persulfate activation under visible light using novel N-ZnO photocatalyst supported on Lantana camara-based biochar.

Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped ZnO photocatalyst supported on biochar (N-ZnO@LBC) was synthesized using the Lantana camera as a green source of biochar. The synthesized photocatalyst was applied as an activator of persulfate (PS) for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The properties of the synthesized photocatalyst were explored before and after photocatalysis using different characterization analyses. The results revealed that the nitrogen doping of ZnO@LBC could reduce the band gap energy from 2.83 eV to 2.78 eV resulting in higher activity under vis

Vegetation restoration facilitates belowground microbial network complexity and recalcitrant soil organic carbon storage in southwest China karst region.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of soil ecosystems, and soils are a hotbed of microorganisms playing critical roles in soil functions and ecosystem services. Understanding the interaction between SOC and soil microbial community is of paramount significance in predicting the C fate in soils following vegetation restoration. In this study, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS genes combined with 13C NMR spectroscopy analysis were applied to characterize SOC chemical compounds and elucidate associated soil microbial community. Our results indicated that the contents

Soil chemistry changes beneath decomposing cadavers over a one-year period.

Decomposing vertebrate cadavers release large, localized inputs of nutrients. These temporally limited resource patches affect nutrient cycling and soil organisms. The impact of decomposing cadavers on soil chemistry is relevant to soil biology, as a natural disturbance, and forensic science, to estimate the postmortem interval. However, cadaver impacts on soils are rarely studied, making it difficult to identify common patterns. We investigated the effects of decomposing pig cadavers (Sus scrofa domesticus) on soil chemistry (pH, ammonium, nitrate, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and carbon)

Electron acceptor-dependent duality of nitrous oxide metabolism in Thiobacillus during sulfur autotrophic denitrification.

Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SADN) is a promising biotechnology for nitrogen removal from low-carbon wastewater; however, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain a significant environmental concern. This study systematically investigated the effects of different nitrogen oxide electron acceptors on denitrification performance, microbial community succession, distribution of the N2O reductase gene nosZ clade, and the ecological functions of Thiobacillus using sequential enrichment cultivation. Among the tested conditions, the nitrate ( NO 3 - )-fed system achieved the highest deni

Resource Quality and Fungal Richness Are Associated with Soil Organic Matter Dynamics in a Temperate Forest in South Korea.

Forest soils play a critical role in carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling by storing large amounts of soil organic matter (SOM). However, the integrated associations linking aboveground resource properties and belowground microbial processes influencing SOM dynamics remain poorly understood. In this observational, cross-sectional study, we analyzed 84 plots across six forest types at Mt. Gariwang, South Korea, to evaluate the relative importance of resource quality and resource quantity in relation to SOM dynamics. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and the C:N ratio were us

Growth form controls the seasonal stability of nutrient-pollution mitigation by submerged macrophytes in shallow lakes.

Submerged macrophyte restoration is widely used to mitigate nutrient pollution in eutrophic shallow lakes, yet its effectiveness is often evaluated during peak plant growth rather than across the full growing season. This creates uncertainty about whether restored clear-water conditions can persist during late-season plant decline. Here, a mesocosm experiment compared a canopy-forming species, Hydrilla verticillata, with a rosette-forming species, Vallisneria natans, at vigorous- and late-growth stages. We measured overlying-water quality, sediment properties, extracellular enzyme activities,

Unrecognised DNA Degradation in Flash-Frozen Genetic Samples in Natural History Collections.

Optimal preservation of tissues from the field to long-term cryo-storage is paramount to securing genetic resources for research needs. DNA preservation techniques vary, with flash freezing currently considered the gold standard in tissue preservation. However, flash freezing tissue samples in the field presents challenges, necessitating a more comprehensive understanding of the quantity and quality of preserved DNA from different techniques in archival collections. We compared metrics from DNA extractions from field-collected amphibian, squamate and bird tissues from archival collections that

Role of Forest Carbon Change in Shaping Future Land Use and Land Cover Change.

Global change, particularly the changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration, climatic variables, and nitrogen deposition, has been widely recognized and examined to have worldwide impacts on forest carbon. However, its influence on forest area required to meet the demand for timber and carbon storage and subsequent land use and land cover change (LULCC) is rarely studied. This study explores the role of global change-driven forest carbon change in shaping future global LULCC projections and investigates underlying drivers. We incorporated the global change impacts on forest carbon from the Canadi

Warming, Snow Exclusion, and Soil Type Alter the Timing of Plant and Soil Activity and Associated Nutrient Losses.

In seasonally snow-covered ecosystems, changing temperatures and snowpack dynamics under climate change have increased the occurrence and duration of soil temperatures that support microbial activity during plant dormancy. During these periods of microbial activity without plant activity (i.e., plant-microbe asynchronies), soil nutrients that build up are vulnerable to leaching loss, with potentially important consequences for ecosystem productivity. Furthermore, asynchronies likely do not occur uniformly in space; rather, their occurrence may be modulated by subsurface characteristics. Soil t
