Somali and Oromo refugee women: trauma and associated factors.

AIM: This paper reports a study identifying the demographic characteristics, self-reported trauma and torture prevalence, and association of trauma experience and health and social problems among Somali and Oromo women refugees. BACKGROUND: Nearly all refugees have experienced losses, and many have suffered multiple traumatic experiences, including torture. Their vulnerability to isolation is exacerbated by poverty, grief, and lack of education, literacy, and skills in the language of the receiving country. METHOD: Using data from a cross-sectional population-based survey, conducted from Jul

Feasibility of interactive technology for symptom monitoring in patients with fibromyalgia.

Use of health information technology (IT) integrated with clinical services has the potential to empower self-management and decrease health care utilization for chronic disorders such as fibromyalgia (FM). However, the appropriate methodology that systematically facilitates the integration of health IT with clinical services between patients and nurses partnering to manage FM is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of technology-enhanced monitoring that engages FM patients using a mobile device. A quantitative and qualitative descriptive design was used in a con

Post-traumatic responses to workplace violence among nursing professionals: a collaborative and comparative study in South Korea and Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence has had a significant and negative psychological impact on nursing professionals worldwide. Concerted worldwide efforts to improve work environments have not yet removed nursing professionals from the threat of violence. It is highly essential to conduct comparative research in various working environments where the nurses of each country have unique experiences of workplace violence. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in the rate, associated factors, and post-traumatic responses to workplace violence between South Korean and Chinese nurses in H

Redesigning Intensive Care Unit Rounds to Improve Collaboration at a Military Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Team communication is essential to delivering health care safely. Nurses in the adult intensive care unit at a large military treatment facility were not consistently present in daily patient rounds and stated that team communication could be improved. This clinical question was developed: among critical care staff members, how does a standardized daily rounding script, compared with current practice, impact interdisciplinary communication over a 36-week period? REVIEW OF EVIDENCE: Current literature includes 3 themes: rounds should be interdisciplinary; include the ABCDEF bundle

Dispelling the common myths about pediculosis.

Pediculosis, the condition of being infested by head lice, is a major community health problem in the United States. Head lice, the most common species in humans, occupy considerable amounts of time and energy both within schools and the medical community. The condition creates school and family disturbances and personal embarrassment--consequences far exceeding its medical effects. Because parents are often embarrassed when they are informed about a head lice infestation, they often do not approach the subject with their health care providers. Pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) need to inco

Perceived barriers and facilitators to family and community nurses' care for older adults: a descriptive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The aging population is becoming a growing challenge for health care systems, pushing toward the need for systemic adaptations. In Italy, the role of the Family and Community Nurse (FCN) was introduced as a response to these demographic changes, aimed at ensuring personalized and integrated care for the older adults at the national level. Despite national institutional recognition, the implementation of the FCN role varies considerably across regions, resulting in uneven and fragmented service delivery. To better understand this variability, the present study aimed to describe the

A method to provide integrated care for complex medically ill patients: the INTERMED.

A growing number of nursing subspecializations have been developed in recent decades. Topics of concern are that care is not tailored to cope with the growing number of patients with more than one chronic disease, there is an increase in co-ordination problems in the care that is provided for this group of complex patients, and the care for these complex patients is extremely fragmented. The assessment of health risks resulting in co-ordinated care with effective communication is vital for multimorbid patients. Our aim is to describe a systematic approach (the INTERMED [IM] method) to identify

The quest for best practice in caring for the home care patient with an indwelling urinary catheter: the New Jersey experience.

This article describes the development of a urinary tract infection (UTI) benchmarking project by the Home Care Association of New Jersey for New Jersey's home care agencies. In the quest for best practice in caring for the home care client with an indwelling urinary catheter, identification of an acceptable UTI rate for indwelling catheter patients was needed to use as a benchmark for care practices.A literature search showed a paucity of evidence. Therefore, the Association agreed to lead a project aimed at identifying what was currently happening in home care settings as a beginning benchma

MOSAIC (MOthers' Advocates In the Community): protocol and sample description of a cluster randomised trial of mentor mother support to reduce intimate partner violence among pregnant or recent mothers.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is prevalent globally, experienced by a significant minority of women in the early childbearing years and is harmful to the mental and physical health of women and children. There are very few studies with rigorous designs which have tested the effectiveness of IPV interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of abused women. Evidence for the separate benefit to victims of social support, advocacy and non-professional mentoring suggested that a combined model may reduce the levels of violence, the associated mental health damage and may increase

Therapeutic parenting--a program for home care.

There is evidence that inadequate parenting in early childhood, combined with socioeconomic risk factors, can contribute to intellectual deficits, character disorders, and antisocial behaviors in children. Early intervention home care services can circumvent these problems.

Management of spinal muscular atrophy: nursing clinical commentary and best practices update.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare neuromuscular disorder that has seen a paradigm shift in its management due to early diagnostic strategies, disease-modifying therapies, and integrated care models. Despite these advances, the nursing role - essential across the care continuum - remains underrepresented in clinical protocols and guidelines. MAIN BODY: This Clinical commentary, authored by Italian nurses with direct expertise in SMA care, outlines the key responsibilities, practices, and procedural frameworks that define specialized nursing contributions. Nurses are involved

Standardized assessment of evidence supporting the adoption of mobile health solutions: A Clinical Consensus Statement of the ESC Regulatory Affairs Committee: Developed in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professions (ACNAP) of the ESC, the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC, the ESC Young Community, the ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology, the ESC Council for Cardiology Practice, the ESC Council of Cardio-Oncology, the ESC Council on Hypertension, the ESC Patient Forum, the ESC Digital Health Committee, and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC).

Mobile health (mHealth) solutions have the potential to improve self-management and clinical care. For successful integration into routine clinical practice, healthcare professionals (HCPs) need accepted criteria helping the mHealth solutions' selection, while patients require transparency to trust their use. Information about their evidence, safety and security may be hard to obtain and consensus is lacking on the level of required evidence. The new Medical Device Regulation is more stringent than its predecessor, yet its scope does not span all intended uses and several difficulties remain.

The (dis)organization of leg ulcer care: A realist synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers affect 1.5% of the UK adult population. Leg ulcers are painful, can be malodourous and are associated with poor quality of life. Leg ulcers are predominantly cared for by nurses in the community. Frequently, patients receive suboptimal treatment through unwanted variations in care and simple ulcers deteriorate to become hard-to-heal wounds. It is important to understand the current UK system of care and how nurses and patients navigate through it. AIM: The aim of this paper was to understand how, when, for whom and in what context leg ulcers are cared for in the

Psychosocial burden and associated factors among nurses in care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic: findings from a retrospective survey in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Care homes were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although high levels of psychosocial burden (i.e., anxiety, depression and stress) during the pandemic have been described for healthcare workers in hospitals, evidence on the psychosocial burden for nurses in care homes during the pandemic is scarce. METHODS: A total of 811 nurses participated in a retrospective online survey between November 2020 and February 2021. Information about the COVID-19 situation (i.e., working demands, COVID-19 cases in their facility, and COVID-19-related burden) of nurses in German care homes during

Healthcare workers' perceptions of the potential value of whole-genome sequencing for post-exposure management of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) remains a public health challenge, with suboptimal treatment outcomes and challenging management of contacts. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) generates a comprehensive drug resistance profile and transmission inference with a single assay. Limited evidence exists on how healthcare workers (HCWs) perceive the value of WGS, especially for post-exposure management. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 22 purposively sampled HCWs (9 doctors, 9 nurses, 4 community health workers) at 11 public health care facilities in the Western Cape,
