AIM: To explore comments made by registered nurse practice assessors during the clinical assessment of students pursuing adult nursing.
BACKGROUND: Student nurses are entering a workforce that has changed professional and educational nursing practice systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited placement learning during lockdowns reduced opportunities for students to practise clinical skills in person. However, the current state of practice assessment for students pursuing adult nursing, particularly post-COVID, has yet to be explored.
DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis.
METHODS: Data we

The treatment of Pediculosis capitis, or head lice, is fraught with misinformation, myths, and mismanagement. Common myths include the need to exclude children from school, the need to remove all visible nits ("no-nit" policies), the need for massive environmental cleaning, that head lice live for long periods of time, and that schools are a common location for lice transmission. Head lice are a common childhood nuisance, causing embarrassment and emotional trauma in both children and families. This article explores and challenges the commonly held beliefs about the identification, management,

For excellence in practice to be the standard for care, critical care nurses must embrace evidence-based practice as the norm. Nurses cannot knowingly continue a clinical practice despite research showing that the practice is not helpful and may even be harmful to patients. This article is based on 2 presentations on evidence-based practice from the American Association for Critical-Care Nurses' 2009 and 2010 National Teaching Institute and addresses 7 practice issues that were selected for 2 reasons. First, they are within the realm of nursing, and a change in practice could improve patient c

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a frequent and preventable healthcare-associated infection. Nurses play a central role in CAUTI prevention, yet barriers to consistent implementation of evidence-based practices persist. In Portugal, few studies have explored nurses' lived experiences in this area. This study aimed to explore Portuguese oncology nurses' perceptions of barriers and facilitators to CAUTI prevention, and to identify suggestions for improving urinary catheter-related care.
METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with a purposive sa

BACKGROUND: Nursing staff, caring for frail older people in long-term care, needs to have a certain level of clinical competence to identify diseases at an early stage and to assess and provide good nursing care. In Finland, nursing care is based on evidence-based and high-quality nursing care. However, earlier inspections by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health showed many discrepancies between the nursing staff's clinical competence and adequate and continuous education.
AIM: This study aimed to explore nursing staff, i.e. the clinical competence and decision-making ski

The nursing process, long considered the basic intellectual tool for nursing, has continued to evolve through use by advanced practice nurses (APNs). Traditionally, the nursing process has been comprehensive in guiding the assessment and intervention phases but has left unspecified the cognitive processes involved in clinical decision making. In an effort to compensate for that weakness, nurses in advanced practice have typically integrated medical diagnostic reasoning into the nursing process. The work of Benner and colleagues (1984, 1996) in explicating the unique reasoning process used by A

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine how nurse educators develop as scholarly writers.
BACKGROUND: To broaden the body of knowledge used to inform practice, nurses need to develop scholarly writing skills. However, writing skill acquisition is inconsistent, resulting from wide variation in or absence of deliberate writing development across all levels of nursing education.
METHOD: A descriptive-interpretive design underpinned by naturalistic inquiry using semistructured interviews of nursing faculty (N = 16) was used.
RESULTS: Five stages of writing skill acquisition emerged from the d

With the knowledge of psychoneuroimmunological responses and the known high stress levels of nursing students, as caring nurse educators, we have become ethically obligated to revise and re-vision our current nursing educational practices. Nurse educators should be motivated to create innovative and radical caring science curricular approaches, so that our nurses of the future are in turn supported in creating caring- healing sustainable bedside practices. This paper details the outcomes from an upper level yoga elective in an RN- BSN program. The course is just one within an innovative holist

AIM: This article is a report on a case study that described and analysed the collaborative process among nurse practitioners and registered nurses in oncology outpatient settings to understand and improve collaborative practice among nurses.
BACKGROUND: Changes in the health system have created new models of care delivery, such as collaborative nursing teams. This has resulted in the increased opportunity for enhanced collaboration among nurse practitioners and registered nurses. The study was guided by Corser's Model of Collaborative Nurse-Physician Interactions (1998).

The clinical externship program for nursing students was developed and implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic at a multi-site healthcare organization. The program aimed to address the critical shortage of health human resources by hiring qualifying undergraduate nursing and diploma program practical nursing students as unregulated care providers to meet staffing needs. The program incorporated a structured orientation, providing a mix of e-learning modules, in-person learning and shifts with an assigned preceptor. The program also included guidelines to define roles and responsibilities, ens

Alcohol and other substance use by nurses potentially places patients, the public, and nurses themselves at risk for serious injury or death. Nursing students are also at risk for problems related to substance use. When viewed and treated as a chronic medical illness, treatment outcomes for substance use disorders are comparable with those of other diseases and can result in lasting benefits. Professional monitoring programs that employ an alternative-to-discipline approach have been shown to be effective in the treatment of health professionals with substance use disorders and are considered

Many children's nurses have significant contact with children who have breathing difficulties and should be using systematic criteria to assess their nursing needs. Children's nurses do not appear to follow systematic criteria but are strongly influenced by the medical model and this may be detrimental to holistic assessment and the development of nursing diagnoses based on nursing needs. As nursing, along with other disciplines, develops evidence-based practice, children's nurses should develop evidence for best practice mindful of children's views, parental needs and the education of future
