Variation in Nordic Work-Related Cancer Risks after Adjustment for Alcohol and Tobacco.

Background: Alcohol and tobacco strongly increases the risk of cancers of the tongue, mouth, pharynx, larynx, and oesophagus, and are also established risk factors for cancer of the liver, colon, and rectum. It is well documented that these habits are unequally distributed among occupational groups. Most occupational cohort studies lack information on these potentially important confounders, and may therefore be prone to bias. Aim: The aim of the study is to present Nordic standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for alcohol and tobacco related cancer by occupation, after adjustment for alcohol an…

Development of a predictive model for systemic lupus erythematosus incidence risk based on environmental exposure factors.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterised by a loss of immune tolerance, affecting multiple organs and significantly impairing patients' health and quality of life. While hereditary elements are essential in the onset of SLE, external environmental influences are also significant. Currently, there are few predictive models for SLE that takes into account the impact of occupational and living environmental exposures. Therefore, we collected basic information, occupational background and living environmental exposure data from patients with SLE to const

Identifying and Prioritizing Hazardous Chemicals in Construction Metal Structure Coating Systems: A Roadmap for Data-Driven Disease Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational exposure as a painter was classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 carcinogen (carcinogenic to humans) in 1989. Chemical agents responsible for cancers and other illnesses among industrial painters are not well-documented. The goal of this systematic review and synthesis was to document the chemistries of metal structure coating systems, summarize data gaps on occupational exposures and health effects among painters, and identify and prioritize hazardous chemicals to guide future exposure and occupational health studies, and u

Evaluation of Subtle Auditory Impairments with Multiple Audiological Assessments in Normal Hearing Workers Exposed to Occupational Noise.

Recent studies involving guinea pigs have shown that noise can damage the synapses between the inner hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons, even with normal hearing thresholds-which makes it important to investigate this kind of impairment in humans. The aim was to investigate, with multiple audiological assessments, the auditory function of normal hearing workers exposed to occupational noise. Altogether, 60 workers were assessed (30 in the noise-exposure group [NEG], who were exposed to occupational noise, and 30 in the control group [CG], who were not exposed to occupational noise); the wo

Occupational and nonoccupational farm fatalities among youth for 2000 through 2012 in Pennsylvania.

Agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in the United States. It is crucial to analyze the previously collected farm fatality data in Pennsylvania involving youth to identify fatality sources and to delineate prevention strategies to mitigate future occurrences. The Penn State Farm and Agricultural Injury Database was updated to include the Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS) for source and event or exposure. Occupational and nonoccupational incidents were compared based on age groups, religious sect, source of injury, and the injury event or exposure. A t

[Contact urticaria with transition to protein contact dermatitis in a cook with atopic diathesis].

Protein contact dermatitis is a rare disease within the group of occupational dermatoses. However, it is of some importance to people in food handling occupations. Skin symptoms usually manifest as immediate-type reactions (type-I-reaction according to Coombs and Gell), but changes to type IV-reactions are known. This applies especially to people with atopic eczema who have contact to fish proteins. This can be derived from a case presented here and a few similar observations described in the literature.

Meningitis, sepsis and endocarditis among workers occupationally exposed to pigs.

BACKGROUND: Workers exposed to pigs can develop meningitis, sepsis or endocarditis due to infection with Streptococcus suis transmitted from pigs to man. AIMS: To estimate the risk of these diseases. METHODS: We used the Occupational Hospitalization Register (OHR) which holds information about occupation and hospital treatments for all adults in Denmark. A dynamic population of male workers exposed to pigs was identified every year from 1995 to 2006 by occupational and industrial groups. First hospital treatment or death in the following year due to meningitis, sepsis or endocarditis was ide

Respiratory allergy to rats: exposure-response relationships in laboratory animal workers.

Laboratory animal workers are at high risk of developing occupational allergy. Little is known about the relationship between levels of exposure and the risk of developing laboratory animal allergy. A cross-sectional study was performed in 540 workers at eight facilities to quantify the exposure-response relationship for allergy to rats, while controlling for determinants like atopy, gender, and smoking. All participants completed a questionnaire, underwent skin prick testing with common and occupational allergens, and total IgE as well as occupational allergen-specific IgE antibodies were ser

Serious occupational injuries in Australia: some deficiencies of the existing data collections.

This study examines the incidence in Australia of "serious" occupational injuries, arbitrarily defined as those which resulted in absence from work for six months or more. The raw data were contained in computer print-outs specially prepared by the State offices of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the study includes analyses by age, sex, occupation and industry of the injured person. The unexpectedly large total of 14,281 high-severity injuries cannot be supported with confidence since the principal finding was the large and consistent variation in injury rates between the States.
