[Effect of "Xiusanzhen" on hippocampal muscarinic cholinergic receptor activity in Alzheimer disease rats].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of "Xiusanzhen" [electroacupuncture (EA) of bilateral "Yingxiang" (LI 20) and "Yintang" (EX-HN 3)] on activities of hippocampal muscarinic cholinergic receptor (mAChR) and the involved neural path in Alzheimer Disease(AD)rats. METHODS: Forty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal control, model, olfactory nerve severing (ONS)-EA of "Xiusanzhen" (ONS-EA) and EA of "Xiusanzhen" (EA) groups. AD model was established by intra-hippocampal injection (AP: 3.5 mm, L:2 mm, H: -2.8 mm) of Abeta(1-40) starch-like peptide (10 microg/2 microL) under the aid

Oral texture influences the neural processing of ortho- and retronasal odors in humans.

Eating implies mutual interactions between different senses. In the present work we aimed at studying relations between food texture and food odor, using both psychophysical and imaging techniques. Eighteen right-handed healthy human subjects participated to both behavioral and fMRI sessions. Fresh, sweetened milk and a more thickened version were delivered orally; in addition, a buttery-cream aroma was presented ortho- or retronasally. Stimuli were applied using a gustometer and or an air-dilution olfactometer, both computer-controlled. In each session subjects rated separately odor-, taste-

Resolution of diminished olfactory sensation after treatment of bilateral ophthalmic segment aneurysms with flow diversion: case report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Olfactory tract dysfunction due to an unruptured intracranial aneurysm is rare. We present a case in which a patient with impaired olfaction related to bilateral internal carotid artery aneurysms experienced subjective and quantitative objective improvement of olfactory sensation after treatment of ophthalmic segment aneurysms with flow diversion. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old woman presented with hyposmia and bilateral ophthalmic segment internal carotid artery aneurysms. The symptom of hyposmia, worsening over a period of several months, was suspected to be

Networks of Indirect Contact Promote Spread of an Environmentally Transmitted Pathogen in a Highly Social Species.

In group-living species, social behaviors, including non-contact territorial defense, may decrease the risk of pathogen transmission and spread by reducing contact among conspecifics, yet these strategies may paradoxically increase opportunities for transmission in some host-pathogen systems. We explore how social behaviors shape direct and indirect pathogen transmission of the emerging Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) pathogen M. mungi in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo). Using empirical behavioral data from a banded mongoose population in Uganda, we constructed social network models

Pathogenesis of chemically induced nasal cavity tumors in rodents: contribution to adverse outcome pathway.

The pathogenesis of nasal cavity tumors induced in rodents has been critically reviewed. Chemical substances that induce nasal cavity tumors in rats, mice, and hamsters were searched in the National Toxicology Program (NTP), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and Japan Bioassay Research Center (JBRC) databases, in addition to PubMed. Detailed data such as animal species, administration routes, and histopathological types were extracted for induced nasal cavity tumors. Data on non-neoplastic lesions were also extracted. The relationship between the tumor type and non-neoplastic

Physostigmine enhances blood flow-metabolism ratio in neocortex.

Inhibition of central nervous system cholinesterase with a single pulse of physostigmine induces a pronounced increase of blood flow in the neocortex, cingulate gyrus, claustrum, and amygdala. This phenomenon is not accompanied by an increase in energy metabolism and may help explain the effect of this drug on memory in normal humans and patients with Alzheimer's disease, as well as other conditions. In contrast, a parallel increase of blood flow and metabolism was observed in the superior colliculus, a component of the visual pathways. Prolonged administration of physostigmine lead to persist

Toxocara canis and lead alter consummatory behavior in mice.

Ingestion of palatable and unpalatable solutions was measured in adult mice in which had been administered the common parasite of the dog, Toxocara canis alone, or in combination with lead. In addition, response to hot plate and susceptibility to electroconvulsive seizure were also measured. Results from the palatability test indicated that either lead or Toxocara may alter the mouse's mode of interacting with its environment. However, the two agents in combination interacted in their effects on consummatory behavior. Results from the hot plate and ECS measures were less clear with respect to

Reciprocal Inhibitory Glomerular Circuits Contribute to Excitation-Inhibition Balance in the Mouse Olfactory Bulb.

The major inhibitory interneurons in olfactory bulb (OB) glomeruli are periglomerular cells (PGCs) and short axon cells (SACs). PGCs and SACs provide feedforward inhibition to all classes of projection neurons, but inhibition between PGCs and SACs is not well understood. We crossed Cre and GFP transgenic mice and used virally-delivered optogenetic constructs to selectively activate either SACs or GAD65cre-ChR2-positive PGCs while recording from identified GAD65cre-ChR2-positive PGCs or SACs, respectively, to investigate inhibitory interactions between these two interneuron types. We show that

Odor processing in multiple chemical sensitivity.

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is characterized by somatic distress upon exposure to odors. As in other idiopathic environmental intolerances, the mechanisms behind the reported hypersensitivity are unknown. Using the advantage of the well-defined trigger (odor), we investigated whether subjects with MCS could have an increased odor-signal response in the odor-processing neuronal circuits. Positron emission tomography (PET) activation studies with several different odorants were carried out in 12 MCS females and 12 female controls. Activation was defined as a significant increase in regio

Comparative analysis of FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity in caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) brains.

The distribution of FMRFamide (FMRFa)-like peptides in caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) brains was studied by immunohistochemistry. In both species, distinct groups of FMRFa-like immunoreactive (ir) perikarya were present in the medial septal nucleus, accumbens nucleus, nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca, suprachiasmatic area, lateral hypothalamic area, and periventricular hypothalamic nucleus. A few FMRFa-ir neurons in the hypothalamic area were located in the neuroepithelial cell lining of the third ventricle. FMRFa-ir fibers were scattered in all major ar

Rhinal cortex, but not medial thalamic, lesions cause retrograde amnesia for objects in rats.

Male Long-Evans rats were trained on five separate object discrimination problems at different times prior to surgery. Following surgery, retrograde amnesia was assessed by measuring retention of the preoperatively learned discrimination problems in lesioned rats and controls. Rats with rhinal cortex lesions displayed temporally graded retrograde amnesia; retention of object discriminations acquired in the recent past (i.e. 2 or 9 days prior to surgery) was significantly impaired, whereas retention of object discriminations acquired more remotely (i.e. 16, 37, or 58 days prior to surgery) was

Estrogen as a neuroprotectant against MPTP-induced neurotoxicity in C57/B1 mice.

Castrated retired breeder male and female mice were treated or not with a 17 beta-estradiol pellet. At 10 days postcastration +/- estrogen treatment all animals were treated with MPTP. Five days later, concentrations of dopamine were determined from the corpus striatum and olfactory tubercle. Both castrated male and female mice treated with estrogen had significantly greater concentrations of dopamine within the corpus striatum compared with their respective gender controls, which did not receive estrogen. By contrast, no statistically significant differences in olfactory tubercle dopamine con

Influence of acupuncture and pharmacotherapy on sensitivity of sensory systems to alcohol irritants in patients with alcoholism.

The sensitivity of an alcoholic's sensory systems (SS) to alcohol therapy is a good indication of treatment efficacy in this disease. In this study, we compare pharmacotherapy (PHT) and acupuncture therapy (AP) on the sensitivity of visual (VL), acoustic (AC), olfactory (OL) and taste (TS) systems to alcohol irritants (AI). The results showed that PHT changed the threshold sensitivity of SS to AI but did not cause aversion of SS to AI. In acupuncture treatment, results can be divided into four groups: Group 1, no aversion of AC was produced to AI; Group 2, no aversion of TS and OL were produce

Differential effects of cocaine, alcohol, and nicotine dependence on olfactory evoked potentials.

Olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) were elicited by odorous and nonodorous stimuli in 50 adult subjects: 26 subjects with histories of either cocaine (n = 19) or alcohol (n = 7) dependence, 10 with histories of nicotine but no other drug dependence, 2 with clinical anosmia of peripheral origin, and 12 subjects without drug or olfactory disorders. The presentation of nonodorous stimuli (i.e. a nasal air puff) did not elicit OEP component amplitude and latency differences among the groups. However, the presentation of odorous stimuli elicited a significantly smaller P1 component in the cocaine-de

Straying phenomenon of migrating LHRH neurons and highly polysialylated NCAM in the chick embryo.

The present study on unilaterally incompletely placodectomized chick embryos revealed that arrival of migrating LHRH neurons into the forebrain area is dependent on the presence of a central projection of the olfactory nerve. When a fragment of the lateral and medial olfactory epithelium was spared the damage, a small number of LHRH-ir cells were found to migrate into the forebrain along a thin NCAM-H-expressing fiber bundle of the olfactory nerve. In embryos with large lesions which destroyed the lateral olfactory epithelium, the poorly developed NCAM-H-positive olfactory nerve fibers were ar

Regional metabolism in microsmic patients with schizophrenia.

The cerebral glucose metabolism of eight patients with schizophrenia and an olfactory agnosia was compared with that of eight normosmic patients with schizophrenia and eight normal controls. Since all patients were scanned while on their current medication regimen, the duration and dosage of the medication of the two patient groups were compared. Similarly, duration and dosage were correlated with absolute regional metabolic rates. No significant effects were found in these analyses. The patients with schizophrenia had significantly lower rates of frontal metabolism than the normal controls. H

Olfactory associative conditioning in infant rats with brain stimulation as reward. I. Neurobehavioral consequences.

In Experiment 1, infant rats were implanted with a stimulating electrode in the medial forebrain bundle/lateral hypothalamus (MFB/LH) on postnatal day 12 (PN12). Four to 6 hours later, the pups underwent associative olfactory conditioning, with half of the pups trained with 30 temporal pairings of odor (5 s) and MFB/LH stimulation (200 Hz, 300 ms), and the other half trained with random presentations of odor and MFB/LH stimulation. On PN13, pups were tested for: (1) behavioral preference for the conditioned odor; (2) focal glomerular layer 2-DG uptake to the odor; or (3) mitral/tufted cell sin

A quantitative study of anterograde and retrograde axonal transport of exogenous proteins in olfactory nerve C-fibers.

The pike olfactory nerve which consists of a homogeneous population of C-fibers of 0.25 micron diameter or less was used to study quantitatively both anterograde and retrograde axoplasmic transport of wheat germ agglutinin and horseradish peroxidase. It was found that even in these extremely thin axons anterograde and retrograde transport takes place. Activity distribution profiles (transport profiles) for retrograde transport were established and found to be similar to the typical profiles of anterograde transport as they consisted of a small rapidly moving peak and a saddle region followed b

Sex-Difference in Olfactory Interhemispheric Malformation Caused by Pax6 Haploinsufficiency.

Sex differences are increasingly recognized as critical factors influencing the onset and manifestation of various neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Among ASD-associated genes, Pax6, which encodes a transcription factor, has been implicated in sex-dependent phenotypes when mutated. The anterior commissure (AC), a major commissural pathway involved in higher cognitive and social functions, exhibits structural abnormalities both in individuals with ASD and in those carrying Pax6 mutations. Anatomically, the AC consists of two principal fiber bundles: the ant
