In the report molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with salicylaldehyde-Cu(OAc)(2) as the template was synthesized and characterized by SEM, porosity and elemental analysis. Copper acetate was introduced since salicylaldehyde alone cannot display imprinting effect for its intramolecular hydrogen bond. The strong coordination interaction between salicylaldehyde and copper acetate made the complex have high retention on the HPLC column based on the SAD-Cu(OAc)(2) imprinted polymer. A catalytic enantioselective conjugate addition of cyanide to alpha,beta-unsaturated N-acylpyrroles was developed using the chiral gadolinium catalyst generated from Gd(OiPr)3 and d-glucose-derived ligand 2. Generally high enantioselectivity was obtained from a wide range of substrates; substrates with beta-aryl and beta-vinyl substituents and alpha,beta-disubstituted substrates can now be used. Using this reaction as a key step, short-step syntheses of several pharmaceuticals and their lead compounds were achieved, including the beta-phenyl-substituted GABA analogue and pregabalin.

Strontium ranelate (SR) is a new drug for osteoporosis that has a unique effect profile, being antiresorptive as well as anabolic. In postmenopausal women with spinal osteoporosis pretreated with calcium and vitamin D, SR reduced the risk of new vertebral fractures after 1 year by 49% and after 3 years by 41% (NNT = 9). The numbers of clinical fractures were in the same periods reduced by 52% and 38%, respectively. The number of patients with more than one new spinal fracture was reduced by 36%. A novel member of a new class of chiral uranyl-salophen complexes has been synthesised. The chiral recognition ability of this receptor toward the enantiomers of two primary amines, a sulfoxide, and a quaternary ammonium chloride has been evaluated for the first time. The structure of a new binuclear cadmium (II) complex, [Cd(H2O)2(Sal)2]2 (Sal= salicylate), has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The single coordination-site transition metal Lewis acids [CpM(BIPHOP-F)][SbF6] (M = Fe, Ru) catalyze the [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition reaction between reactive nitrones and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes to give chiral isoxazolidines with ee values of 75 to >96%. The stereochemistry of the major enantiomer is consistent with an endo approach of the nitrone to the Calpha-Si-face of the enal in the s-trans conformation in the (R,R)-catalyst site. The absolute configuration is based on an X-ray structure determination.

Schemes developed by the authors for antibacterial therapy of gastroduodenal bacterosis caused by Campylobacter spp. in children are described. The data on the treatment of 56 patients with duodenal ulcer and gastroduodenitis are presented. The efficacy of the treatment with medicines under the control of the clinical, endoscopic and microbiological indices was compared. The study showed that De-Nol, furazolidone and combination of trichopol (metronidazole) with vicair were the most efficient drugs for therapy of children with such diseases.

Arsenite has been known for half a century to have a protective effect against selenium poisoning. Paradoxically, arsenite inhibits the conversion of inorganic selenium salts to methylated excretory products, although methylation has long been regarded as a detoxification mechanism for selenium. Female rats were administered intraperitoneal injections of solutions of lead acetate and sodium selenite.
