OBJECTIVE: Microscopic techniques are an essential part of otolaryngologic practice. These procedures demand advanced psychomotor and visuospatial skills, and trainees possess these abilities to varying degrees. No method currently exists to predict who will possess an aptitude for microscopic surgery. Our goal was to determine whether performance can be predicted by background experiences or skills.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Tertiary academic hospital.
SUBJECTS: Students with no previous surgical experience.
INTERVENTIONS: Subjects were surveyed on a wide range ch

OBJECTIVE: To compare surgical methods, functional gain, and speech discrimination using two different coupling methods for an active middle ear implant. Of several couplers enabling placement of the active element at various locations, two function directly at a cochlear membrane, bypassing a missing or malformed ossicular chain. This study evaluates whether either of these methods is more beneficial.

To investigate the feasibility of applying the transcanal endoscopic approach (TEA) for surgical treatment of residual/recurrent cholesteatoma and present the preliminary results of 17 revision procedures that were carried out with this minimally invasive approach. The records of 17 patients (aged 5-76 years) who underwent transcanal revision procedure using rigid 3-mm diameter, 0°, 30° and 45° endoscopes between 2009 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. A wide posterior tympanomeatal flap was elevated via the external auditory canal and then transposed inferiorly in cases of cholesteatoma

PURPOSE: Internal jugular vein is anatomic continuation of cranial dural sinuses in the neck region. During the course of skull base the first enlarged segment of jugular vein is described as jugular bulb. The aim of this study is to evaluate the jugular bulb abnormalities and define the risk of high and dehiscent jugular bulb injury during middle ear surgery.
METHODS: This is a retrospective radiologic study of 1,010 patients (2,020 temporal bones) with various ear symptoms who had high resolution temporal bone computed tomography scans between 2007 and 2011.
RESULTS: High jugular bulb was

The prognostic significance of the variety of changes in the internal auditory meatus (IAM) caused by vestibular schwannoma was retrospectively analyzed in 69 consecutive patients with vestibular schwannoma. Preoperative bone-window computed tomography was used to classify IAM changes into extensive destruction (17%), widening (46%), and normal IAM (36%). Extensive destruction (47 +/- 19 years) and widening (48 +/- 13) occurred in significantly younger patients than normal IAM (59 +/- 9). Preoperative hearing was significantly more severely disturbed in patients with extensive destruction than

The incidence of acute mastoiditis has declined dramatically during the postantibiotic era. Even so, antibiotic-resistant or unusual pathogens can still cause this disease entity. At our hospital, we documented an increase in antibiotic-resistant and atypical pathogens such as Actinomyces spp. and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this paper, we discuss the optimal diagnosis and treatment strategy for acute mastoiditis, and we describe our retrospective review of 13 patients with mastoiditis who were treated at our hospital from 1988 through 1998. Eight of these patients recovered following treat

BACKGROUND: This study presents the clinical experience in the management of pediatric cholesteatoma, specifically evaluating whether a delay in surgical intervention following symptom onset negatively affects prognosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of children who underwent surgical treatment for chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma between March 2017 and July 2018, with a minimum follow-up of 24 months. For staging purposes and to correlate disease severity with clinical outcomes, the 2017 European Academy of Otology and Neurotology/Japan Otological Society Joint Conse

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive surgery of benign middle ear tumours is possible by using the endoscope. The optimal lighting and the broadest vision it offers, allow a transcanal approach to these rare tumours. The objective of this work is to summarise its key points through a case series.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of benign middle ear tumours that underwent exclusive endoscopic surgery in a third-level adult university hospital between June 2018 and June 2020. Postoperative follow-up was performed by otoendoscopy and audiometry.
RESULTS: Six patients underwen
