High Altitude Hypothermia Reversal in the Field: A Case from Northern Pakistan, Karakoram Range.

Severe accidental hypothermia is a well-recognized risk in high altitude environments, where sudden weather changes, prolonged exposure to unstable temperatures, and limited medical access can rapidly become life threatening. In remote areas such as the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan, improvised rewarming techniques may be the only viable option until evacuation is possible. We report a case of a 32-y-old healthy male trekker who was found unresponsive by his companions at ∼4200 m in the Karakoram Range with a recorded axillary temperature of 27°C, measured using a portable low-reading t…

HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention in Pakistan: Why are we so far behind?

Cervical cancer remains a major global health challenge, disproportionately affecting women in low- and middle-income countries, largely due to persistent infection with high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18. In Pakistan, cervical cancer contributes substantially to female cancer morbidity and mortality, yet HPV vaccination coverage, awareness, and uptake remain critically low. Despite the proven effectiveness of HPV vaccines and screening in preventing cervical cancer, Pakistan faces significant social, logistical, and health system barriers that limit impact. Strengthening in…

Burden of Neurological Disorders in Resource-Limited Settings: Lessons from Pakistan for Global Neurology.

Neurological disorders (NDs) are a leading global cause of disability and mortality, with their burden falling disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Pakistan exemplifies the systemic challenges faced in resource-limited settings, including delayed diagnosis, limited specialist access, and fragmented care pathways. Despite this, comprehensive spectrum-based data remain scarce. This study was aimed to quantify the burden and characterize the spectrum of NDs presenting to a major Pakistani tertiary-care center and to identify associated predictors and geographic disparit…

Integrative taxonomic insights reveal a triad of new Parasola species from southern Punjab, Pakistan.

The genus Parasola is known for its diverse range of species, but the taxonomic understanding of its diversity in southern Punjab, Pakistan, remains incomplete. In this study, we describe three novel species of Parasola from this region, identified using an integrative approach combining morphological examination and molecular phylogeny. We included field pictures of the species in their natural habitats and illustrations of the microscopic features to complement the taxonomic descriptions. Molecular phylogeny, based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S sequences, revealed that two spe…

Integrated diagnostic and host biomarker assessment of plasmodium infections in malaria-endemic Peshawar, Pakistan.

Malaria remains a major public health problem in Pakistan, where Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum are predominant. Seroprevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral infections among refugees in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B (HB) and Hepatitis C (HC) viral infections, with 328 million cases globally, represent a significant disease burden. Currently, Pakistan has 3.88 million HB and 9.31 million HC cases. High-risk populations like refugees are disproportionately affected by these infections. The objectives of this study were to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) among Kashmiri refugees in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, and to identify the key demographic and educational risk factors associated with the seroprevalence in th…

Staphylococcus epidermidis: Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Biofilm-Forming Isolates From Pediatric Bacteremia in Pakistan.

Background: Staphylococcus epidermidis is an important cause of nosocomial infections in children. The study undertaken identified antibiotic resistance markers among biofilm-forming S. epidermidis. Methods: A total of 105 bacteremia-positive samples from hospitalized children were processed for identification of S. epidermidis using species-specific rdr gene. Phenotypic antibiotic resistance was checked through Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. 96-well microtiter plate assays and PCR were used for biofilm production and antibiotic-resistant genes, respectively. Results: Among 105 clinical is

Exploring effects of severe mental illnesses on marriages: A qualitative study from Karachi, Pakistan.

Marriage is a central institution in South Asia, carrying deep social, cultural, and moral significance. In Pakistan, where psychiatric illness and divorce are both heavily stigmatized, the interaction between serious mental illness and marital life is complex and under-examined. Given the paucity of literature on this topic, our study explores how severe mental illnesses (Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) affect marital quality, caregiving roles, and marriage outcomes within this sociocultural context. Using an exploratory qualitative design, we conducted in-d…

Lived realities of symptom burden among haemodialysis patients: a phenomenological study from rural Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide, leading to a growing number of patients developing kidney failure and requiring haemodialysis (HD). HD prolongs life and improves health, but it imposes substantial physical, nutritional, psychological and financial demands on patients. Patients on HD often endure a high symptom burden, which significantly impairs their lives. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore and describe the lived experiences of patients residing in rural areas of Pakistan receiving HD. DESIGN: A transcendental pheno…

This study aimed to examine maternal mortality through the lens of the three delays model using data from Pakistan. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of the Pakistan Maternal Mortality Survey 2018‑2019, drawing on the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey Verbal Autopsy dataset. Descriptive statistics and stratified analyses were …

Conducting tobacco control surveys among schoolchildren in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: A feasibility study.

Most of the world's 300 million smokeless tobacco (ST) users live in South Asia but ST policies for that region are poorly researched, developed and implemented. Longitudinal studies to understand the uptake and use of ST and smoking, and influences on these, such as health promotion strategies, are lacking. We planned to conduct longitudinal surveys among secondary school students in three countries with the highest ST burden: Bangladesh, India and Pakistan to explore ST and smoking uptake, use and health promoting strategies. Before running that longitudinal study, we assessed the feasibilit…

Autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss genes in Pakistan during the previous three decades.

Hearing loss is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder, with over 148 genes and 170 loci associated with its pathogenesis. The spectrum and frequency of causal variants vary across different genetic ancestries and are more prevalent in populations that practice consanguineous marriages. Pakistan has a rich history of autosomal recessive gene discovery related to non-syndromic hearing loss. Since the first linkage analysis with a Pakistani family that led to the mapping of the DFNB1 locus on chromosome 13, 51 genes associated with this disorder have been identified in this populati…

Heavy metals concentration and human health risk assessment in selected shrimp species of Pakistan.

Heavy metal pollution in marine organisms poses a significant threat to both ecosystems and human health. Dumping untreated sewage into the sea pollutes coastal waters with toxic metals. This study examined the levels of chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) in three shrimp species of genus Penaeus i.e. Penaeus merguiensis, Penaeus monodon, and Penaeus indicus. The findings revealed that the average levels of arsenic, lead, and mercury were considerably higher than the legislative limits. Furthermore, chromium and lead levels remained consistent acro
