Effects of exercise and eucapnic hyperventilation on bronchial clearance in man.

The effects of exercise and eucapnic hyperventilation on bronchial clearance were assessed in 10 healthy nonsmoking adults. A 99mTc-albumin aerosol was inhaled as a bolus in late inspiration under controlled conditions to produce deposition primarily in large airways. Lung retention of radioactivity was quantified using a gamma camera and subsequent computer analysis. Compared with quiet breathing (control), exercise significantly speeded clearance (P less than 0.05). Resting eucapnic hyperventilation at levels similar to those achieved during exercise produced less speeding. Compared to contr

High spinal cord injury precipitating syncope: a rare indication for pacemaker insertion.

The current evidence for vasovagal syncope management is that cardiac pacing is only indicated in a highly select group of patients where symptoms can be linked to bradycardic episodes. High spinal cord injury can lead to autonomic dysfunction and sympathetic nervous system hypoactivity. A high spinal cord injury can theoretically precipitate profound bradycardia leading to haemodynamic instability and syncope. A patient in his 50s with a history of C2 spinal injury was admitted to our tertiary centre for management of what was initially thought to be septic shock causing hypotension and synco

[Parameters of heart rhythm variability and QT-interval in patients with ischemic heart disease and type 2 diabetes].

We studied parameters of heart rhythm variability and QT intervals in 141 patients (mean age 52.4 +/- 7.3 years) with unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction; 101 of these patients (71.6%) had type 2 diabetes. We found that in patients with diabetes parameters RRNN, LF and LF/HF were significantly lower. In patients with diabetes and risk of microangiopathy lowering of LF was maximal and correlated with elevation of glycosylated hemoglobin. In patients with diabetes and neuropathy significant reduction of power in HF range and increase of maximal corrected QT-interval value were observ

Bruxism affects stress responses in stressed rats.

It has been proposed that suppression of stress-related emotional responses leads to the simultaneous activation of both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and that the expression of these emotional states has a protective effect against ulcerogenesis. In the present study, we investigated whether stress-induced bruxism activity (SBA) has a physiological effect of on the stress-induced changes of the stomach, thymus, and spleen as well as blood leukocytes, cortisol, and adrenaline. This study demonstrated that SBA attenuated the stress-induced ulcer

[The autonomic nervous system function in benign prostatic hyperplasia].

BPH is responsible for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Pathogenesis of prostatic overgrowth is multifactorial. It has been suggested that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) may also be involved. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of the ANS activity in pathogenesis of BPH. The study was done in 13 men with LUTS secondary to BPH. ANS activity was assessed based on heart rate variability (HRV) measurement in resting conditions and after simulation with deep breathing (DB test) and the tilt test. LUTS (with IPSS scale), quality of life, waist-hip ratio and objective measures of be

Autonomic nervous system function in Baltic myoclonus epilepsy.

Baltic myoclonus epilepsy (BME) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by tonic-clonic seizures, myoclonus and a progressive course. The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical symptoms and signs of possible involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and objectively evaluate autonomically mediated cardiovascular reflexes in this syndrome. Fifteen patients with BME and 14 healthy control subjects were studied. Thirteen (87%) of the patients had symptoms suggesting ANS dysfunction. The most common symptoms were postural dizziness and sweating disturbances. The heart rate

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Diabetic Patients After Myocardial Infarction: Prognostic Role of the Valsalva Maneuver.

Background and Objectives: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including acute myocardial infarction (MI), and is frequently associated with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). Post-MI autonomic dysfunction contributes to adverse outcomes, but data on prognostic markers in diabetic patients remain limited. This study aimed to (1) compare autonomic nervous system (ANS) function between patients with MI and DM (MI/DM), MI without DM, and DM without MI; (2) assess differences in MI/DM patients based on survival status; and (3) identify prognostic facto

Parasympathetic Responses to Face Cooling in Adolescents with Sport-Related Concussion and After Clinical Recovery.

Face cooling (FC) initiates the mammalian dive reflex, which elicits a parasympathetic autonomic response. In our pilot study, collegiate athletes had a blunted parasympathetic response to FC within 10 days of sport-related concussion (SRC). The objective of the current study was to assess the FC response in adolescent athletes with acute SRC and after clinical recovery. Symptomatic adolescents with SRC (n = 23, 15.48 ± 1.2 years, 52% male) had heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) measured during the FC test (7.83 ± 2.5 days since injury) and again after clinical recovery (46.44 ± 36.4 days

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is reduced after pulmonary vein isolation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) describes heart rate (HR) changes in synchrony with respiration. It is relevant for exercise capacity and mechanistically linked with the cardiac autonomic nervous system. After pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), the current therapy of choice for patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), the cardiac vagal tone is often diminished. We hypothesized that RSA is modulated by PVI in patients with paroxysmal AF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Respiratory sinus arrhythmia, measured by using a deep breathing test and heart rate variability parameters, was

Effect of autonomic blockade on ventricular repolarization shortening: response to behavioral stimulus in paced dogs.

Autonomic tone has been suggested to be a significant determinant of ventricular repolarization duration with both rate dependent and independent effects. Using the His bundle-paced dog, a model that eliminates the need for QT correction factors, we explored the rate-independent effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic blockade on ventricular repolarization shortening following an excitatory stimulus. Six male His bundle-paced beagle dogs were paced at 80 bpm and fitted with jackets, surface ECG electrodes, and radiotelemeters. Dogs were given propranolol, atropine methyl nitrate, or the app

Autonomic mediation of glucagon secretion during insulin-induced hypoglycemia in rhesus monkeys.

Autonomic activation mediates the majority of the increase of glucagon secretion during insulin-induced hypoglycemia in several species including dogs, mice, and rats. However, the role of the autonomic nervous system to increase glucagon during hypoglycemia in humans remains controversial, and investigations in nonhuman primates have not been previously conducted. The autonomic contribution to glucagon secretion during hypoglycemia in a nonhuman primate was examined by two independent pharmacological approaches. Glucagon responses to clamped insulin-induced hypoglycemia were compared in consc

Interoception Network in the Rat Brain.

The brain is never truly at rest. Even in the absence of external stimuli or cognitive tasks, the central nervous system continuously receives peripheral signals from visceral organs, such as the heart, lungs, and stomach, and sends motor commands to regulate organ physiology. This bidirectional brain-body interaction, also known as interoception, engages neural pathways via a hierarchical set of brain regions, including the nucleus of the solitary tract, hypothalamus, paraventricular nuclei of the thalamus, insular cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex, among others. However, it is largely un

Implantation of Combined Telemetric ECG and Blood Pressure Transmitters to Determine Spontaneous Baroreflex Sensitivity in Conscious Mice.

Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) are both controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and are closely intertwined due to reflex mechanisms. The baroreflex is a key homeostatic mechanism to counteract acute, short-term changes in arterial BP and to maintain BP in a relatively narrow physiological range. BP is sensed by baroreceptors located in the aortic arch and carotid sinus. When BP changes, signals are transmitted to the central nervous system and are then communicated to the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system to adjust HR. A rise in BP caus
