Outcome of hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term visual outcome of eyes with hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We adopted a retrospective approach involving 39 eyes of 24 Korean patients diagnosed as having hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane, excluding patients who could not be observed beyond 3 years of age and eyes that had any other ocular anomalies that affect vision. Final best-corrected visual acuity and refractive status were compared according to treatment type and laterality. Mean visual acuity was transformed to the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolut

Surgical management of submacular hemorrhage. A series of 47 consecutive cases.

BACKGROUND: The development of a thick submacular hemorrhage usually carries a poor visual prognosis. The surgical removal of submacular blood may improve the otherwise poor outlook in these cases. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients underwent vitrectomy with surgical removal of submacular hemorrhage. The patient population consisted of two consecutive groups. Group 1 (1989 to 1991) included 23 patients (20 with age-related macular degeneration [ARMD], one with idiopathic submacular hemorrhage, one with presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome [POHS], and one with angioid st

Factors prognostic of visual outcome in patients with subretinal hemorrhage.

We reviewed the charts of 29 patients with large subretinal hemorrhages involving the center of the fovea to evaluate factors that might be prognostic of visual outcome. The average final visual acuity was 20/480 with a mean follow-up of three years. Patients with thick hemorrhages (causing an obvious elevation of the fovea) had worse final visual acuity than patients with thin hemorrhages (P = .02). The diameter of the hemorrhage was not a significant predictor of outcome. Patients with aging macular degeneration had poorer final visual acuity (mean, 20/1,700, P = .002), and patients with cho

Pattern ERG and psychophysical functions in Best's disease.

The aim of the study was to asses the neurosensory retinal function in 12 patients (24 eyes) with different stages of Best's disease, by determining how pattern and full field flash ERG responses were related to visual acuity, stage of disease and extent of visual field loss. All patients had typically abnormal EOG responses and normal full field-flash ERG responses. Patients were stratified in two groups according to visual acuity. In the first group 12 eyes with visual acuity better than 0.5, all amplitudes and latencies of PERG P50 and N95 responses were in the normal range. Small central s

Interpalpebral Fitting Philosophy: A Rarely Used Approach to Keratoconus Management With Corneal Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses.

This unique case report demonstrates an unusual approach to managing keratoconus: the interpalpebral fitting philosophy. This technique is rarely used in contact lens practice. In contrast, the lid-attachment fitting philosophy is more commonly utilized. The interpalpebral fitting is a challenging task concerning lens centration and stability. This report underscores the potential efficacy of the interpalpebral fitting approach in keratoconus patients with specific characteristics, such as large palpebral apertures. A 25-year-old man presented to our center for an eye examination, complaining

Pars plana management of ectopia lentis in children.

Although the removal of the lens from patients with ectopia lentis has long been associated with a high rate of surgical complications, the surgical outlook for these patients is improving now that more sophisticated surgical modalities are available. We treated a series of eight consecutive patients with pars plana lensectomy (12 eyes) whose visual acuity could not be satisfactorily improved with optimal optical correction (phakic or aphakic). Visual acuity could not be improved in any of the subjects. Preoperative visual acuities ranged from 5/400 to 20/70. Eleven of 12 eyes maintained a vis
