OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to systematically assess the mucus thickness in the gastrointestinal tract of laboratory animals commonly used in preclinical studies.
METHODS: Mucus thickness was studied post-mortem in the rat, rabbit and pig, using cryosections stained by the modified periodic acid Schiff/Alcian blue method.

A young man presented with a large multilobulated and mutilating tumour of the scalp, which had been relapsing for years. Acantholytic dermatophytosis is a rarely reported condition of dogs that clinically and histopathologically mimics superficial pemphigus (erythematosus, foliaceus). A single case of severe hydatidosis in a liver of a Najdi sheep was studied. The estimated age of animal was 1.5 years and the liver was infected with 29 cysts and their diameters ranged from 4.0 mm to 5.1 cm.
