Type D personality as a risk factor for 3-year cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease and their spouse: a prospective cohort study.

AIMS: Type D personality has been established as an independent psychological risk factor for adverse outcomes in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. However, research on the association between Type D personality and cardiovascular events in couples is limited. This study investigated the correlation between Type D personality and cardiovascular outcomes among CAD patients and their spouses. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective cohort study included 4035 CAD patients for first coronary intervention therapy and their spouses, recruited from January 2017 to July 2020. Type D personality,

The burden of disease of idiopathic/genetic generalized epilepsy - A nationwide online survey.

The aim of the study was to assess the self-reported burden of disease in people with idiopathic/genetic generalized epilepsy and risk factors associated with high disease burden. We performed a nationwide online survey on epilepsy characteristics/treatment, quality of life/daily living followed by Standardized Assessment of Personality-Abbreviated Scale, Major Depression Inventory, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (brief) and the brief Epilepsy Anxiety Survey Instrument. The survey was sent to 275 representative patients with IGE ('Funen cohort') and later publicly distributed via the Danish Epile

Differences in temperament and character dimensions in adolescents with various conduct disorders.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Adolescence is characterized both by a large developmental potential and by an increased risk for emergence of different forms of psychopathology. International classifications of mental disorders recognize the psychopathology of adolescence at the age of 15−18 through the categories of conduct disorders and some forms of addiction: chemical and non-chemical. The aim of this research was to analyse the personality structure among four groups of adolescents manifesting different types of conduct disorder based on Cloninger’s Psychobiological theory of personality. METHODS: The

Brittle diabetes: psychopathological aspects.

BACKGROUND: The term "brittle" is used to described an uncommon subgroup of type I diabetics whose lives are disrupted by severe glycaemic instability with repeated and prolonged hospitalization. Psychosocial problems are the major perceived underlying causes of brittle behaviour. Aim of this study is a systematic psychopathological assessment of brittleness using specific parameters of general psychopathology and personality traits following the multiaxial format (axis I and II) of the current DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for mental disorders. METHODS: Patients comprised 21 brittle type I d

Associations between chronotypes, psychopathology, and personality among incoming college students.

Chronotye is associated with age, sex, personality, and parental monitoring during childhood. The evening type is associated with poor school performance, sleep problems, anxious/depressive symptoms, tobacco smoking, caffeine consumption, alcohol drinking, and suicidality in adolescents. The present study tested the relationships between chronotype and a wide range of psychopathology and personality traits among 2919 incoming undergraduate students. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire that included demographics, plus the Morningness-Eveningness (M-E) scale, Brief Sympt

Refining personality disorder subtypes and classification using finite mixture modeling.

The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic system for Axis II disorders continues to be characterized by considerable heterogeneity and poor discriminant validity. Such problems impede accurate personality disorder (PD) diagnosis. As a result, alternative assessment tools are often used in conjunction with the DSM. One popular framework is the object relational model developed by Kernberg and his colleagues (J. F. Clarkin, M. F. Lenzenweger, F. Yeomans, K. N. Levy, & O. F. Kernberg, 2007, An object relations model of borderline pathology, Journal of Pers

The utility of the PAI and the MMPI-2 for discriminating PTSD, depression, and social phobia in trauma-exposed college students.

This study investigated the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Revised (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) and the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991) with regard to each instrument's utility for discriminating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from depression and social phobia in a sample of college students with mixed civilian trauma exposure. Participants were 90 trauma-exposed undergraduates (16 male, 74 female) classified into one of four groups: PTSD, depressive disorders, social phobia, and well-adjusted. For both the PAI and the …

Interrater reliability of the structured interview for DSM-IV personality in an opioid-dependent patient sample.

We examined the interrater reliability of the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality (SIDP-IV) in an opioid-dependent patient sample at the criterion as well as at the diagnostic level for both categorical and dimensional data. At the criterion level (Cohen's kappa ranging from 0.76 to 0.93 and intraclass correlation coefficient ranging from 0.67 to 0.97) as well as at the diagnostic level (Cohen's kappa ranging from 0.66 to 1.00 and intraclass correlation coefficient ranging from 0.88 to 0.99), the reliability was excellent. The results suggest the SIDP-IV to be an adequate instrument fo

[Personality disorders in patients with eating disorders: a controlled study].

A group of 24 eating-disordered female subjects (10 anorexia nervosa--AN--and 14 bulimia nervosa--BN--patients) were interviewed, using a semistructured interview for DSM-III-R Axis-II Personality Disorders (SCID-II). A group of 54 subjects without eating disorder acted as a control group. A high rate of personality disorder (PD) diagnoses occurred in eating disordered subjects (AN and BN patients), with a high prevalence of borderline, dependent, and self-defeating PD. Avoidant and obsessive-compulsive PD were more common in AN patients, whereas BN was associated with histrionic PD. Findings

Association between personality characteristics and sleep quality among Chinese middle-aged and older adults: evidence from China family panel studies.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality will have adverse effects on physical and mental health, quality of life and other aspects of middle-aged and older adults. Sleep quality is affected by many factors. Whether the sleep quality measures of the participants had changed in the previous or subsequent time period is not easily taken into account. Moreover, there have been no studies on this topic in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. The objective of this study was to mitigate the bias of sleep quality assessment, and analyze the association between personality traits and sleep quality in Chinese m

Diagnosis-seeking at subspecialty memory clinics: trigger events.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that dementia often goes unrecognized, and diagnostic assessment is often further delayed. Understanding families' decision to seek care at memory clinics is relevant to efforts to facilitate early diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine the population seeking care at two memory clinics and the triggers causing caregivers to seek diagnostic assessment for a family member. METHOD: We surveyed a consecutive sample of caregivers who accompanied a patient to an assessment at two university memory disorders clinics. Caregivers (n=416) described events that led them to seek

Feeding and Eating Disorders in Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Obese subjects undergoing bariatric surgery often display medical and psychiatric comorbidities, influencing post-operative course and long-term prognosis. Candidates for bariatric surgery are evaluated through a multidisciplinary assessment in the pre-operative phase, including a psychiatric visit. The psychiatric examination aims to screen psychiatric comorbidities, including feeding and eating disorders (FEDs). Indeed, there is evidence of the association between obesity and several psychiatric disorders, such as FEDs, but also anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic diso

Interpersonal Problems and the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders: An Investigation Using the Interpersonal Circumplex.

A central feature of personality disorders (PDs) is interpersonal problems, which can be effectively conceptualized using the interpersonal circumplex (IPC). This study replicates and extends previous research on the relationship between the dimensional DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and interpersonal problems, as there are only a few studies in this area. The Structural Summary Method (SSM) was used in a sample of 168 psychiatric inpatients who completed Criterion A and B measures according to the AMPD: The Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5

The Emotional Landscape of Multiple System Atrophy: A Preliminary Personality-Based Perspective.

Background: Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rapidly progressing neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by autonomic failure, parkinsonism, and cerebellar ataxia. While its non-motor symptoms are well-documented, personality features in MSA remain underexplored. This study characterizes the personality traits of non-demented patients with MSA and explores their association with clinical variables. Methods: Twenty-six patients with MSA were assessed using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). Dementia was excluded by Montreal Cognitive Ass

The HINT1 Gene rs2526303 Polymorphism and Its Association with Personality Traits in Cigarette Smokers.

The development of a substance use disorder (SUD) is a multifaceted process influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Recent research has suggested the potential involvement of the HINT1 gene in various aspects of plasticity, mood regulation, anxiety-like behaviour, and stress-coping mechanisms. Moreover, personality traits are also recognised to be instrumental in developing substance dependency. Given these considerations, our study investigated the associations among cigarette smoking, personality traits, and the rs2526303 polymorphism. Additionally, we investigated the interact

Revising the trait model of the alternative model of personality disorders: Comment on Clark and Watson's structural review.

In their review of examination of the self-report Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5; PID-5) factor structure and joint factor analysis of this instrument with other self-report measures of personality and psychopathology, Clark and Watson (2022) make argument for a set of modifications to the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD)-the AMPD-5.1. In this commentary we offer opinion that their proposed modifications to the AMPD are problematic. In particular, we express concern that their modifications are based
