BACKGROUND: To report a case of Werner's syndrome with bilateral juvenile cataracts.
CASE PRESENTATION: Review of the clinical, laboratory, photographic, genetic testing of the patient. A 26-year-old Chinese man presented with impaired vision in both eyes for more than a year. Anterior segment examination of both eyes revealed cataract. According to the ocular symptoms and systemic signs, including low body weight, a short stature, a bird-like face, atrophic and scleroderma-like skin, in addition to the juvenile cataracts, the clinical diagnosis of Werner's syndrome was made. Next-generation

PURPOSE: To evaluate the proximity to the radial nerve on cadaveric specimens of 2 modified anterolateral portals used for elbow arthroscopy.
METHODS: Ten fresh cadaveric elbow specimens were prepared. Four-millimeter Steinman pins were inserted into 3 anterolateral portal sites in relation to the lateral epicondyle: (1) the standard distal anterolateral portal, (2) a modified direct anterolateral portal, and (3) a modified proximal anterolateral portal. These were defined as follows: direct portals 2 cm directly anterior to the lateral epicondyle, and proximal portals 2 cm proximal and 2 cm

Reduction malarplasty surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially in many East Asian countries. This is, in part, because many Asians consider a small, smooth, and feminine face to be more attractive and aesthetically desirable. Among the various reduction malarplasty methods, the L-shaped osteotomy technique, through intraoral and sideburn incisions, is now one of the most frequently performed surgical techniques. During the surgical procedure, it is important to shave the zygomatic process of the temporal bone through the sideburn incision. By carrying out this simple

Mutilating hand injuries in children are injuries that are significant not only because of the actual injury caused to tissue but also owing to the significant psychological impact they have on the patient and family alike. Management of these injuries requires significant surgical skill as well as a well-planned and well-executed treatment protocol. This article discusses the etiology, incidence as well as treatment of mutilating hand injuries in a child. Relevant literature has been reviewed and appropriate treatment guidelines have been provided.

The authors report aspects of paracoccidioidomycosis, acute-subacute clinical form, juvenile type, in a 19-year-old female patient. Paracoccidioidomycosis, juvenile type, classically occurs in young patients, both sexes, with lymphoma-like aspects as initial presentation. However, following the natural history of the disease the lymph nodes assume patterns of infectious disease, as an abscess and fistulae. Systemic dissemination of the disease can occur and lethality and morbidity are significant in this clinical presentation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare handedness of whip use by Australian jockeys in Melbourne (where racing is counterclockwise) and Sydney (where racing is clockwise).
METHODS: Photographs of finishes of Thoroughbred horse races in Melbourne and Sydney were examined. Where whip use was clearly visible, the venue, the hand in which the whip was held and the names of the jockey and the horse were determined. Comparisons of whip hand use between cities were made using the Chi-squared test.
RESULTS: A total of 771 identifications were made, 328 from Melbourne and 443 from Sydney, representing 78 jockeys and

PURPOSE: To compare anterior chamber parameters in normal eyes and eyes with mild to moderate keratoconus corneas using rotating Scheimpflug imaging and evaluate trends in corneal protrusion progression.
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary.
METHODS: The anterior chamber depth (ACD) at the corneal center, thinnest point of the cornea, and 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, and 3.0 mm paracentrally; central pachymetry; and posterior elevation were measured by Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam) in eyes with keratoconus and eyes of refractive surgery candidates. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the practicability and efficacy of digital retinal camera (RetCam) as a method for early diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
METHODS: One hundred and twelve preterm infants admitted to the First Hospital of Jilin University from June 2007 to March 2008 were enrolled. Fundus examinations were performed by indirect ophthalmoscope and RetCam respectively. The results from RetCam were compared with those from indirect ophthalmoscopy which was a "gold standard" for ROP screening.
RESULTS: ROP was identified in 46 eyes by RetCam, and in 43 eyes by indirect ophthal

OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of rhinoplasty on the objective measurement and subjective appreciation of facial symmetry and to investigate whether perceptual shifts are correlated with objective changes in facial proportions.
DESIGN: Frontal view photographs were used to measure bilateral symmetry ratios of the medial and lateral canthi, tragus, ala, and oral commissure in 100 patients before and 6 months after rhinoplasty. Gestalt dichotomous impressions of facial symmetry were also obtained in all cases. Paired t tests and chi(2) tests were used to compare facial proportions and the

Patient images are used for many purposes in medical practice. They are placed in the medical record as an adjunct to clinical care, displayed to colleagues, students and other audiences in educational settings, and published in medical journals or other media as part of medical research. In each case it is not only prudent, but necessary for the patients’ protection and interest that appropriate consent be obtained. While medical journals invariably require written consent for photographs that may identify the patient, the format of the photograph consent form is usually not specified, nor is

Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) is an important adjunctive technique to traditional lipoplasty that permits true circumferential body contouring of the trunk and thighs. Its effectiveness is realized in those patients demonstrating diminished skin tone, skin irregularities, and fibrous areas of lipodystrophy. Patient evaluation and selection, indications for UAL, and operative strategy beginning with the initial consultation are discussed.

A collection of 893 historical picture postcards from 1900 to 1935, depicting dwarfs and giants, was analysed from medical and psychosocial viewpoints. In conditions such as 'bird headed dwarfism', achondroplasia, cretinism, so-called Aztecs or pinheads, Grebe chondrodysplasia, and acromegalic gigantism, the disorder could be diagnosed easily. In hypopituitary dwarfism, exact diagnosis was more difficult because of heterogeneity. The most common conditions depicted were pituitary dwarfism and achondroplasia. Most of those with gigantism had pituitary gigantism and acromegaly. Brothers and sist
